  1. Re:I DID read the article... on Andreessen on the Browser Wars · · Score: 1

    Kudos!
    My feelings exactly!
I do web testing for a large IT group (Fed Gov't) and I hear all too often "it can't be done!"
Response: "No, YOU can't do it for Netscape!"
W3C compliance is a key that both (all) browsers should code against, but don't.
Opera, OTOH, is the closest "commercial " browser I've used (default).
LYNX = Cool, text based, just the facts ma'am.
AWB = just tried, no comment, not enough exp.
    Others = suggestions please.

    My point?
Most browsers suck at one point or another.
    Why?
Most web sites are browser-centric, to a degree.
Until there is a basic alternate web page (W3C compliant) for every page out there, most sites will continue to suck in one browser or another.

Can this be remedied? Hoping, Wishing, Dreaming.
My test lab is getting ghosted far too often.

... when there is something worth buying.
Occasionally, I go in to the used CD retailer in my local area to see if there is anything from my mis-spent youth. Usually not.
I don't bother with too much new stuff. Boy, there's a lot of Sh..stuff being pumped out.

Same for movies. The theaters don't get my money.
    Fluff and more Sh..stuff.
Waiting for LOTR to be available for rental, though.

Boycott the RIAA and MPAA!? I'm WAY ahead.

I, too, have recommended AVG to many newer PC owners. AutoUpdate and AutoScan settings are included.
Loaded it on a laptop once that have been "running naked" through the 'net. It rebooted, detected a trojan, prompted to clean, and no more prob.

For the uninitiated new users, I also recommend "Zone Alarm" as a free firewall. I had one person tell me "Zone Alarm" was too complicated(???) and they went and shelled out for Norton Internet Security or some such...(sigh, Oh, well).

Hmm, trojan, isn't that a condom?

How can a movie screw up a book??
You have read the book?, don't see the movie.

The book was good and the movie sucks?
Well, the book will always be good and the movie will always suck.
    Some things are constant.

    Let's see, $7.50 -$12.00 for a one-time movie ticket. Same for a paperback.
    Movie = 1 1/2 - 2 hours.
Book = a lifetime if you wish.

I don't go to movies. Books are better.

The last movie I saw in a theater was "Last of the Mohichans" (sp). It was worth the admission ($6.00 cdn).

Oh BTW, the libraries are FREE.

While it's true that recent world events have changed the way people and commerce flow across the longest undefended boarder in the world, what is the ultimate effect here.
I frequently drive from Canada's capitol into the
"Good Ol' US of A" (just in spring and summer).
Do I now need a passport? My Canadian I.D. was always good enough (except when re-entering my own country!!!).
How are Canadian passports viewed in the US?
Did that little episode involving Mossad operatives and Canadian passports do anything except provide fodder for Canadian comics.
I like travelling through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Upstate NY. I hope that nothing makes it anymore troublesome to cross the boarder than it already is.

I deal with several Web Developers who rely heavily on Javascripting.
I am so tired of hearing "It can't be done any other way".
The current "standards" we are supposed to follow dictate functionality has to be maintainded with javascripting turned off.
When reminded of this, they say "Why would you turn it off?"
Perhaps I'll have to insist they all read Slashdot more often.
