  1. Some videogames are art on Are Videogames Art? · · Score: 1

Much like movies, videogames have an initial purpose to entertain. Also like movies, some of them can be considered as art, others not. But to censor a game or movie doesn't give the author of the work the ability to release to the public, which determines what is and is not art.

Also, on a side note, responding to the fact that in most art, the patron does not have a chance to edit: Music is one art form in which the patron is able to adjust and perform the art. Just thought that it would be useful in the argument.

  2. re: other renderer releases on Non Photo Realistic Quake · · Score: 1

has anyone released another type of NPR rendering that isn't available with the standard distribution of NPRQuake? I've had it for about 6 months, and have yet to find any settings other than blueprint, pbrush and sketch.

  3. Combinations that worked: on Simsville Canceled · · Score: 1

While it is a shame that Simsville didn't work, check out SimCity 2000 in conjunction with Simcopter. You can import your own Cities into SimCopter.

  4. Good question: on How Would Crypto Back Doors Work? · · Score: 1

I don't have an answer for that, but I'm assuming that it would be something along the lines of a 3-key system: One private, one public, and one government. The government code would be constant all the way across, and would be able to decode all messages encoded with the public key. My only question would be: What happens if the government key somehow slips through security measures?

  5. Re:GPS equipment in phones would be useful here on FEMA To Use Cell Phone Signals To Find Survivors · · Score: 1

Well seeing as the GPS equipment and the cell phone equipment would be unrelated (IIRC since GPS uses satellites and not cellular towers) it would be possible that the cell phones could be located as they are right now. I agree that having GPS on telephones isn't exactly the best idea in general, but in this case, it would have been extremely helpful.

I have emailed to CNN asking if they could either confirm or deny the validity of the story. I haven't received a response yet. Hopefully I will be able to have a response back soon. when it is in, I will respond again.

  7. There's Something to be said for Spellcheck. on Full-Screen Video Over 28.8k: The Claims Continue · · Score: 1

skeptical. next time run it through a spellchecker first.

The idea of not needing broadband connections is going to be a non-issue (possibly) in the near future, with the current prices of broadband access and expanding service range. Sure, it would be cool to have full screen video streamed over a 28.8k connection, and it would make it easier on other connections' bandwidths, but it's almost always the case that a lower bandwidth requirement means degraded quality.

  8. First Thing's First... on Review: Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back · · Score: 1

    I thoroughly enjoyed this film.

Second of all, I found its "wrap-up" of the View Askew Universe to be fairly good. My only question is, where was Brodie's girlfriend, and why is he no longer the host of the Tonight Show?

But anyways, if they can manage to get suzanne the orangutan linked in, then it's definitely covering most bases in terms of a wrap-up.

damned shame it didn't make top box office, even with the "see it twice" promotion.

  9. still fry ants / negative ri or less than 1? on Negative Index of Refraction Created · · Score: 1

The only problem with the ants is that you will have to use a concave lens to make it work, so you couldn't make a magnifying glass with the same shape out of the material. Also, doesn't this mean it has a refraction index that is less than air, and not in fact, a negative refraction index? (i.e. the difference of ri's of air and the material is negative.)

or have I been cracking a little too much smoke? Quickies know Quickies, quickies is quickies... unless I am completely and utterly wrong, I belive that this would be a "Holy Pop Culture Reference Batman!" from Discworld II ? mmkay.

  11. Linux is not in trouble (explanation) on Is Mac OS X Threatening Linux? · · Score: 1

The main reason that Mac OSX will not be a threat to linux is the fact that (unless I am mistaken)Mac OS X will only run on Macintosh Hardware, which is not quite as cost-efficient as the standard hardware that runs linux. Hence, large companies will recognize that using linux, they can save their company much more money than if they equipped their offices with all new computers running OS X. On a final note, I believe that it is much easier to procure aid in the case of a problem among the linux community, and a new operating system might not be as kind to people with problems. Oh well there go my two cents... could someone please return them before I go broke?

  12. Nothing like calling out one from others on Fair Use And Game Mods? · · Score: 1

I find it interesting that this story was talking about a mod that uses characters from Dragon Ball Z while there is a Half-Life mod in the works which is simply titled "Dragon Ball Z Mod" I find it strange that the company doesn't find them and destroy all THEIR dreams first... this must have some sort of significance....... maybe
