Sounds like bad news for Montavista. http://www.mvista.com/ Intel has had a partnership w/ Montavista for several years now, and this is really their Bailiwick.
Laws are (and should) be designed to protect the rights of the minority, and not to cater to the whims of the majority. Ergo, slavery is no longer legal, people still have civil rights, and I have the RIGHT to own bolt cutters to cut off a lock. It is just illegal to cut other peoples' locks.
The whole issue becomes obfuscated when we begin to discuss "average" people or "consumers." These are all Lobbyist code words for people who are ignorant and don't care.
The last time I checked, I was a "CITIZEN" of a country where the PEOPLE are sovereign.
This is just another depressing example of the meatheads in congress lining there own pockets from the special interests and pedling fear (Al Queda DVD Hackers???) to the public.
Just like every other screaming liberal, "I'm glad that Saddam is gone, but there has to be a better way!"
OK Genius, what's the better way? (That actually achieves the intended outcome)
The day that I hear some actual, usefull suggestions from the screaming liberals will be the day I die of shock.
In the fantasy land of these people, the "Scary Right Wingers" already have a plan that requires zero dollars and zero lives and magically removes Saddam (or fixes global warming or whatever).
But it suppressed because somehow Ford, Shell, the Bushes, or whoever, would make less money. Therefor they go with the bad mean plan that costs lives and dollars.
But strangely, no conservative has ever become a liberal and taken the secret with him.
So wishfull thinking aside, conspiracy theories aside, suburban white male guilt aside....
What is your PLAN?? Huh? Stop whining, and tell us all the answer
Harlan, you and Darl need to stop copying one another's business models. He copies your publishing of fiction, and you realize that litigation is more profitable than work!
Well, my friendly neighborhood radio station was kind enough to send me a free copy of Star Office 6.0 (insert CNET Radio plug here). Frankly, I love it. Other than the anoying warnings about losing formating when saving in MS format, its been great so far. And the KDE integration is much better than before. I should have Solaris 9 up in a few days, and will test it all. Cheers
I seem to remember my Freshman Political Science Professor beating us (figuratively) about the head and shoulders for using terms without defining them. The Question: What is a computer? Before you can try to force someone to keep "Proof of autheniticy and EULA" documents with a computer, one should have to define what a computer is. Frankly, they act as if it is the case, based upon their new policy of having stickers for the serial numbers.
By the way, the issue in the federal courts would have been settled long ago if they would define what an Operating System is. Last time I checked, an OS is the core program (kernel) that manages computer resources and scheduling. Maybe the DOJ and the States should get Tannenbaum to testify and explain that Windows Media Player, (And the Desktop for that matter) are APPLICATIONS and NOT part of an Operating System, nor that they ever could be. And while we are at it, we should address the definition of a computer as a MODULAR platform that can be assembled from its component parts.
And by the way, perhaps schools should get in the habit of accepting donations of computer parts and avoid the whole discussion.

One of the problems with Lineo is one of self perception. Did Lineo consider itself an embeded systems company that used Linux? Or a Linux company that focused on embeded devices?
Frankly, the Embeded Linux community (and specifically the Embeded Linux Consortium) needs to band together rather than fracturing, as their real competition is from the WindRivers of the world.
Another issue, is the poor way that Lineo participated in the open source community. Taking, but not giving back. MontaVista is a better example of an embeded linux company that understands the importance of open source community membership and fiscal responsibility.
MontaVista saw the writing on the wall last year May, and laid off 60-70 of its 150 workers, but by doing so, reduced it burn rate, and impressed investors, while Lineo was focused on being a dot-com and building fancy offices.
In the end, it is inevitable that Lineo needed to take this step, but the question is...is it too little, too late?

Boy, you really are Anonymous Coward. Ask Taco if you can keep it. Everyone else can be "Almost as Cowardly as Anonymous Coward."
Now, as to your rant. hmmm...it sounds like you are REALLY upset. And this is what you believe? hmmm..... OK. Sounds good to me. You just stay apoplectic and stupid, and I will sleep soundly.
You are sovereign in your country. If you don't like something, don't allow it. I mean really, if its important, take a stand. The Saudi's got away with forbidding 500,000 Americans troops from having alcohol. How? Because they believed it. Now me personally, I think they were stupid. But they did what they felt that they needed to do to protect their culture.
Now you sit here and whine about how your culture is being destroyed by the evil Americans. Well, if I were offended by your walking nude into my neighborhood, but did nothing but complain, then I would be as guilty as you are for whining here about this.
Thanks, you saved me a lot of typing
That was when we stopped calling you Plumheads and started calling you BIDiots =P
But seriously, sucks to be us. I h8 Larry. =(
Anyone remember MightyWords?
