Let's face it, if you're going to try to overthrow a behemoth like Google, you should start by using a simple, easily-remembered, not-pointlessly-unintelligible name. Vivisimo? Teoma? Not bloody likely.

I think, perhaps, that size is not necessarily the issue, as much as mentality. From what I can see, Americans are more rule-bound than many other nations. A quick example: in Canada (yes, I'm Canadian), our highway-level speed limit is 100km/h (a few miles faster than 60mph, to put it in perspective). However, its generally understood (in an unspoken type of way) that 120km/h is an acceptable speed. When you drive down to the States (or when Americans drive up here), they seem to drive very slowly. What am I getting at? The American psyche seems to be based around rules and boundaries. I personally don't know if this would work in the US, simply because the culture there isn't right for it. It seems that there is this idea that you must protect what you have, and if the current system doesn't work to do that, more rules must be created. Obviously, there is a point (which we are fast approaching, if not already at) where few but those able to pay for expensive lawyers will be able to benefit from such a rule-bound society.

Anyway, it makes no difference - this won't apply to beer, as beer is not water.

It's got pretty much the same syntax highlighting (I'm pretty sure it uses the same KDE widget), though the PHP highlighting works better, and it has a project-based interface. As well, it includes inline PHP, JavaScript, and HTML reference. I personally used to use Advanced Editor (and at one point Kate) until I discovered Quanta. IMO, it is a natural extension of kwrite into a PHP IDE.

Then, each update can be moderated independent of the original post (and perhaps automatically "inherit" the original score). This way, the author would not be able to use a previous post to flood /. with trolls. As well, this would prevent a plethora of you-stupid-bastard-your-link-is-wrong-use-preview replies. After the first few such replies, the author would have posted an annotation to their original post, instead of a reply to their own post (which people don't get to until after they have posted their own variation on a you-stupid-bastard reply).

In regards to the google toolbar, easy searching functionality has been around in Konqueror for awhile. You can "create" your own URIs (or just use the set of default ones) such that "gg:whatever" will search for "whatever" on google or "rpm:whatever" will search for "whatever" on rpmfind (for me -- the default is rf or rpmfind).

Personally, I find that the interface for at least two Open Source browsers -- Konqueror and Galeon -- far surpasses IE's interface. Mozilla with the MultiZilla tabbed interface is also excellent (and IMO better than IE).

Many people also complain that IE can view everything. Unfortunately, there are some pages that are IE-specific, but I have not found too many pages that I cannot view in at least one of Konqueror, Netscape, or Mozilla. Quite simply, IE on Linux is not something I find to be necessary.

(Un)fortunately my IP is no longer static: though there are some advantages security wise (errr sort of) I am a bit ticked off -- it can be rather annoying to run a static domain with a dynamic IP address. I agree: most Java IDEs I have tried are much too slow. I would like a good native IDE, not written in Java -- they're just too slow and cumbersome (swing's responsive on my box can be downright horrible at times).

I am currently using kate (one of the editors that comes with KDE), as I can turn on the filelist to get a list of open files, use the projectmanager plugin (comes with it) to easily load sets of files, and the java highlighting is good. Ant is great for my compilation needs, and I just use konsole's "tabbed" multiple-shells-in-one-window interface to handle the various parts of my projects (kate also allows you to have a shell built into your editing window, but I find konsole to be easier).

If you want something with some more features, but isn't as slow as Netbeans/Forte, I was using Jedit before I switched to kate. It is a really good Java-based editor with a great set of plugins so that you can basically build your own customized IDE. In fact, I find Jedit's features, with appropriate plugins installed, to be superior to Forte's.
