PCs are ugly and useful. Say you want watch some divx or xvid flics that accidently got on your harddrive. Instead of dragging your beloved gaming rig up to the TV, you have a small, quiet, dedicated unit that can do the job well without the PC eyesore. Also modding is popular. The small footprint of these boards allow modders more freedom of expression. These PCs are not going to run Doom3 or Half-life 2 but sometimes are better not seen or not heard. HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) you are going to hear this buzzword often in years to come!
I gave up my landline 4 years ago. I never talked on the phone much anyway. My internet is via broadband. My Cingular cell-phone sits on a table and pretends it is a landline. My parents live in Florida and I live in Indiana. My father (59 years old) had a stroke and since I do not chat on the phone much I had no idea it was down. It took my family 8.5 hours to track me down via other means. Thanks Cingular. Or thanks Mr. Hacker if that turns out to be the case.
Linux ought to be something of beauty. It is not. There are too many distros. Too many ways of doing things. If everybody that programmed and tinkered with Linux could focus on improving it beyond Windows it could be done easily. Gates is not scared, Linux is too fragmented. Too many people are doing their own thing and nothing ever gets accomplished. Get rid of that dog ugly and slow gui. Stop trying to see how many different systems you can get to run Linux. I have installed distro after distro and they all lack polish. Linux, the way it is today is retrocomputing with new hardware. The linux people ought to look at Beos. Load the free version on your new machine. Hunt down all the tweaks and patches to get it up on your new hardware. Look how fast the gui is. You need to look at how beautiful 0SX on a Mac is. Now, you linux people need forget the whole x11 rubbish and the countless window managers you have. You need to focus. It is pityful that one man, Klaus Knopper, and his Knoppix could accomplish so much. If all you would create a lightning fast gui(Beos) in Linux with some taste (OSX) that could run on anything (Thank Mr. Knopper), Mr. Gates would in fact lose quite a bit of sleep.
My machine is an WinXP one. I have not had a single global crash for over a year. My son uses OSX and I find myself playing with it and enjoying it. I find it very slick indeed. I love to play cutting edge games and my XP box is the shit. I am a big fan of Linux and I always explore the new Knoppix distro when it is released. I have bought both Redhat and Mandrake off the shelf at staples. The Mandrake purchase was immediately pitched in the trashcan right outside the door. I was not going to use it but I will support it! If all the distros would work together and get rid of that fugly, outdated, slow X11 interface and strive for something like BEOS had going on, Linux could rival both M$ and Apple. Right now there is no direction and X11 needs to be aborted.
Computers are not going away. We are evolving. I am 39 nine years old and the only thing that I write is checks or sign my name on a document. Handwriting will go the way of drafting and shorthand.
I love chicken catching. The only way to do it with finesse is to dress up like gladiator. I hold a net with one hand and a frog gig with the other. I pretend the frog gig is my trident. I usually have a mp3 cd with nothing but canned crowd yells and Conan music. Talk about a rush!
Hydrogen is not hard to make. The hard part would be setting up hydrogen stations to refuel the cars. The "evil" and "wealthy" oil companies are not going to invest in H stations. They sure as hell would be out to squash anybody they could that tried. The only way a hydrogen car and a hydrogen fuel station is going to survive is with the automakers themselves. Let's take for example, Honda. Honda has the money and the technology to make a pure H car. They fit every dealer who sells the H cars with a H station. People who live decently close to the dealer could buy a H car and actually use the thing. As more and more of the cars are sold, new stations could be added by demographics. The oil companies could gripe all they want and it would be illegal for them to turn-away gasoline burning Hondas at their gas stations. Hydrogen will have to be a new industry totally separate from the oil industry. It is just going to have to take a company with some insight, duty to the enviroment, and money.
Let's make sure that a/. story about BitTorrent shows up every few days on this site so none of the damn tracker sites work. They are as fragile as eggs anyway. The RIAA or MPAA or whoever must be paying.\ to do this knowing that the nerds will post in their comments a web address to "their favorite sites" and that other nerds will gangbang the damn sites. Thanks for another story. This is 2 days in a row. Let's keep the tracker sites down, shall we. This so sucks.
