  1. Re:I guess I don't see the need.... on Redirecting Audio from PC to PC? · · Score: 1
Meh... rant rant rant... Ubuntu utterly failed on my p3-450. After 4 installations, it finally only installed correctly when I nuked the entire harddrive first and let it reformat the ENTIRE harddrive.

Then, my network card wouldn't work. Oh, it asked me all my settings and took just as much time as if it worked. But the card was greyed out.

It was a waste of many hours of my life. Most of the waste was because, for the first time in my life, I had a disc that passed verification that was actually still corrupt! (New dvd burner hates old cd-rs, and i still have 600 left.)

But despite the disc problem, my network didn't work. I could search for a soulution but time and time again the past has taught me that finding a solution to a windows problem is ALWAYS quicker and easier because more people have had that problem. (Yes, that's quite a spin on things, but it's the truth.)

I try linux out about every 3 years (Slackware 1998, RedHat 6.2 2000, Ubuntu AND VectorLinux 200601). It will be 3 more years before I allow my time to be wasted like that again. I'm giving up much quicker this time because the past few times I allowed it to suck whole weeks out of my life. I got stuff to do. I can't afford sysadmin pauses in my production line.

It has taken me many years of playing and getting my ass handed to me, but I finally understand why trackballs are inferior to mice.

If my wife can beat me in Quake 3, there is a problem.

It took me awhile to believe that a mouse was better than keyboard, but ultimately it was plainly freaking obvoius. It's not quite as obvious with trackball vs mouse.

The problem is, you can only move the trackball as far as the ball can go, at which point you must take your finger off the ball, or spin it without touching it. It is a black art that can be developed, and in my prime I could pwn a server or two (if the people were sucky enough, haha).... But a mouse with a pad gives you far more room to move... In the same way that a car is easier to drive with a full steering wheel than with a ps2 controller. Can you imagine driving a real card with a ps2 controller?

I like that I can turn my wheel about 4 feet (circumference). It gives me many many many different millimeters of choice. The PS2 controller?? gives you about 10 millimeters of choice. It is a similar concept with mouse vs trackball.

Sadly, I mouse left-handed and use the arrow-pad right-handed. Trackballs tend to be asymmetrical (mine anyway) and sit in my lap which is very convenient considering i play in my recliner on my 36'' tv like I would any other game. Most mice are not asymmetrical.

Consequently, switching from mouse to trackball will now mean aiming with my right-hand instead of my life, moving with my left hand instead of my right, and moving with keys on the left side of the keyboard instead of the right. It is going to be a total mindfuck to switch and I am sure it will take me months to adjust.

But I have, finally, after 10 years, accepted the inferiority of the trackball just as I did the keyboard during the Doom2 days.

Curious: If you play Quake3, what is your \sensitivity and \cl_mouseaccell set to?

I actually think it is a groupthink desire for individuality. When trying to do something unique, like watching a cartoon or listening to an obscure band, there is always a group of conformists-who-think-they-are-non-conformists who automatically doesn't like something once it reaches a certain level of popularity.

It seems to me to strictly be a function of those who watch a show during it's determined time. I think people who never saw the simpsons, and went back and watched all the episodes on dvd, are not going to find a discernable line where suddenly the episodes "sold out" and got bad. If anything, it's a very gradual decrease.

Simpsons was groundbreaking. But now there are tons of shows just as groundbreaking and good in various different ways. (Some examples: South Park, Futurama, SeaLab, Aqua Teen, Kevin Spencer, even Beavis & Butt-head, The Critic, Duckman, Drawn Together, Kid Notorious, even Gary The Rat, Stripperella.) It's not as unique so it's not as novel. I think people misinterpret this as bad.

Simpsons doesn't tickle the brain like it used to because it is not a unique kind of tickling. That's not synonymous with bad. I think if you were to watch episodes purely randomly, and rated how good they were on a 0-100 scale, that most of the episodes would still fall within 30 of each other.

And WHAT, exactly, is funnier anyway? Desparate Housewives? George Lopez? Where are all these hilarious shows that should be on instead of Simpsons? For ME, anyway, I need about 2 shows a night minimum. If simpsons is not good, please show me 14 other shows that are better (and preferably animated) that I can watch instead!

I hope Bart gets laid someday.

The word "hoax" is not a 0-or-1 binary operator. It comes in shades of grey. Many people believe the numbers of deaths were greatly exaggerated.

Now, my grandmother was liberated from a Nazi Labor Camp by my grandfather, who was part of the 1st Infantry division and stormed Normandy on D-Day. I have no doubts that the Holocaust happened. I have no doubts that great evils were committed.

However, there are those who say it didn't happen at all, and there are those who say the numbers were greatly exaggerated, closer to 500K than 12M.

Now, in the same way that "White" doesn't mean "Aryan", "Jew" doesn't mean "Zionist". But there are still Aryans and Zionists out there, and all groups who purport their superiority are willing to use propaganda to leverage their interests. That a conspiracy to inflate the death toll may exist is really obvious: Just look at the difference in reported military deaths in ANY war. Take a look at Afghanistan or Iraq. We have 2 sides saying 2 different numbers.

Who is right? No one will ever know. But people who question currently-accepted fact should not be imprisoned for daring to do so. America has recently extradited people to Germany for the expicit purpose of their incarceration for daring to question what is commonly-accepted.

Questioning authority is good. Without it, we would still think the Sun orbits the Earth. Now don't get me started on September 11th -- suffice to say I hope people who question what happened on September 11th don't receive the same treatment as people who question the holocaust, or the truth will never come out.
