By nature, engineers are lazy. I say this in the context of one that is not demeaning but rather in the sense that engineers will try to solve a problem in the easiest and most economical way possible. I say so because i'm also a mechanical engineer like the poster.

solving a problem using OOP will require more initial effort than using a traditional language like FORTRAN so you see why OOP is seldom used.

Also, engineering software is not as mainstream as say a spreadsheet so that it has a very limited market thus is not very appealing to the software makers and tend to be niche markets.

  13. Re:GLOBALIZATION ON WHOSE TERMS? on Defining Globalism · · Score: 1

If you read from history, globalization is as ancient as can be. Ancient civilizations with "visionary" leaders tried to conquer the world through military means - Romans, Greeks, Persians, Chinese, etc. Technology available ( basically transaportation and communication) to them prevented them from doing this in their lifetime but now, the technology is available to make this possible in our lifetime. This has continued even during the rise of European powers - Spain, England, Portugal, Italy, Germany and France.

Human nature is to be the most powerful or richest so you can have absolute control. So until we learn to coexist in harmony with our neighbor and environment, we will never find true peace in this world and events such as September 11 will continue to happen.

  15. Try to install a Linux or *BSD in your school on How Did You Become a UNIX Administrator? · · Score: 1

I started my career in computing when I was 27 learning Microsoft Multiplan (I don't know how many /.ers know what it was). After that was COBOL and FORTRAN. I became a real sys admin (HP-UX) at around 33 too. Before the admin job, we were tasked to develop a plan to convert our company's computing platform from mainframes into Unix boxes and PCs.

When we installed our first application that does material tracking in a manufacturing operation, I was the natural choice to be the admin due to my technical background on the project. The concept there was that as part of the project, members of the team were trained in various components of HP-UX and Oracle admin. to enable us to manage the system without expensive external support.

I would suggest therefore that you develop something useful for your school (I presume since you said you were an english teacher) that can employ Unix/Linux/*BSD systems and use this as a springboard for a career in sysadmin. Maybe a web interface for displaying/calculating grades (for teachers only) and assignments (for students and parents) or just even a mailing list. Last year when my daughter was in middle school, their principal would have a weekly newsletter sent to parents who subscribed. Maybe you can do something similar running on a system you administer in addition to the web page mentioned above.

In other words, create something useful that runs on Linux, *BSD or whatever Unix variant and you can use this as a springboard for a sys admin job.

    Good luck.

Since they have the equipment and know-how to synthesize these drugs, they are the ones who profit immensely at the detriment of society in general.
