  1. mLife in the US on Do You Accept Cellphone Payments? · · Score: 3, Insightful

You may recall seeing something about it during the Superbowl a few years back.

Here's a tip for all you inventors looking to make things easy for the rest of us: CELL PHONES DO NOT HAVE A SIMPLE ENOUGH INTERFACE FOR MOST COMMON INTERACTIONS.

  2. Dystopian parable on Broadcast Flag All But Approved · · Score: -1, Troll

    The right to watch?

You mean the right to use others' intellectual property without regard.

It's a nice idea, but perhaps a little too dystopian for this world.

  3. The name is everything on Hydrogenaudio Closes Doors For Now · · Score: -1, Offtopic

Ogg Vorbis is a stupid name. It doesn't give the casual user any indication of what it does (especially as it itself is not a codec only a container).

We need a format called "Standard Media Format" or SMF for short. It can be versioned and since it is the "standard" everyone will need to implement it.

What lies underneath the name is superfluous.

  4. I remember when rock was young on Aussie Music Industry Sues ISP Over Filesharing · · Score: -1, Offtopic

But now those days are gone and I'm getting threatening letters from the BSA, RIAA, and GNAA.

When did it all stop being about the music?

  6. I just saw the remake of Star Wars on Rogue Squadron III - The Sequel You're Looking For? · · Score: 0, Redundant

Now that I see Greedo shooting first, the whole cantina scene suddenly makes sense. Previously, Han Solo was portrayed as some kind of criminal, ruthless and willing to kill over the slightest thing. It didn't mesh with the rest of the series where Han is actually a fun-loving good guy scoundrel (in Leia's words).

But having seen the remake with the corrected Greedo scene added back, Han's personality is truly brought back into alignment. He isn't a ruthless criminal, he's a rogue scoundrel trying his best to just stay under everyone's radar. Greedo forces him into the life or death situation by shooting first.

Having played Rogue Squadron I, I hope that III can live up to the reputation!

I bet you feel like your ability to illegally trade music by broadcasting it without paying royalties has not been hampered by this last ruling.

I bet you feel that you will continue doing it from now and into the future because arguments like "you support the artist not the RIAA" and "music trading increases sales" are good enough to salve your mind.

  16. I read once that you can communicate via pigeon on John Patrick: ENUM is a Really Big Deal · · Score: 1

If the RFC is correct and it's true that TCP/IP can be implemented using carrier pigeons, how would one go about making the pigeon to wire interface? And if it is possible, how do you handle implementing ENUM on top of that?

Can the pigeon poop be recycled somehow?

  17. If you think about it, the phone system is a cow on John Patrick: ENUM is a Really Big Deal · · Score: 4, Funny

The whole idea behind having to dial a *number* to get in touch with someone is so antiquated that it's hard to believe that in this year 2003 we are still using it as our primary means of communication. It's like a giant cow just standing there eating and sleeping and sucking up valuable resources and farting toxic methane gas which is warming our atmosphere making this world unlivable.

If we can get VoIP, we can finally tip over this flatulent bovine and bring ourselves into the 21st century. I shouldn't have to dial a number to connect to someone. No one ought to be reduced to a simple number! I should be able to call an acquaintance using their name or ideally some truly identifying tag like a URL. ENUM is essentially the only system that would allow this kind of connection.

The phone companies are sleeping on their laurels now. It's time to bring the next tech to bear and knock these soon-to-be hamburgers over.

  18. Based on trust on John Patrick: ENUM is a Really Big Deal · · Score: 1

ENUM is based on trust, in the sense that your ENUM server won't send you off to the phone call version of goatse. So far we have other systems based on trust like the DNS system (which is being systematically undermined by those designated to care for it, but I digress). It is only through trust that we are able to hit the enter key without fear that our DNS server won't send us to tubgirl or comp-u-geek, and so far it's worked out quite well.

However, I don't trust people who have two first names and no last name, "John Patrick".

  19. const is a better solution on John Patrick: ENUM is a Really Big Deal · · Score: 2, Funny

Unless you are actually enumerating the values of a user-defined type, it is safer and simply better programming practice to use the const keyword instead of the deprecated enum hack.

And I use VoIP now and it saves me a lot of money in long distance charges. Whether the service provider is using ENUM, I don't know, but I do know that as an end user I don't care one way or the other. Const, Enum, it's all the same to me (as a user).

  20. I don't receive any spam on Baffling the Spam Bots · · Score: 3, Informative

Hotmail's spam filter has gotten really smart in the past few months. Yahoo's filter used to be the best among web mailers, but Hotmail has improved to the point that I don't get any spam in my hotmail inbox anymore.

I'm not one to go about shouting the praises of Microsoft, but someone over there's got their head out of their asses.

  21. The PDA died on Death of the PDA? · · Score: 1

The problem with the PDA is that it doesn't fill a niche. Rather, PDA makers have tried to force a niche into existence.

Nobody needs as much power as a PDA provides, and if they did it would be more economical to get a subnotebook with all the features of a real computer without the clumsy limitations of a PDA. On the low end, a simple organizer is a much better and much cheaper solution than a half-assed PDA like the Palm or a full-blown albatross like the PocketPC.

Smartphones are just the next in this dead line of products. A glorified PDA, the Smartphone is just the same old same old in a newer, smaller package. It's a package that really shouldn't be getting any smaller as the limitations on usable size are already reached with the latest Palm lines.

The solution isn't putting more functionality into a device, it's figuring out what the most necessary features are and making them intuitive. Microsoft used to think about making things more intuitive, but somewhere along the line they let the Bloat Team take over the research department.
