  2. And no Skyline? on Microsoft Money Leads To Street-Legal Porsche 959s · · Score: 5, Funny

Microsoft Money doesn't help me buy anything. It does tell me that I'm way over budget and will be bankrupt within 3 months of the start of the fiscal year.

  3. UNIX is dying? on Interview with Havoc Pennington of Red Hat · · Score: 5, Insightful

I don't think you can seriously say that UNIX is dying and say that Linux is killing it. Linux IS UNIX.

Unless you are trying to say that commercial UNIX systems are losing ground to Linux, it simply doesn't make sense to make such a false distinction between UNIX and Linux. They are one and the same.

There is really no excuse to use C and C++ in this day and age except that the programmer in question is too lazy to learn newer and better ways to program.

No one uses Algol anymore. No one ought to be using such outdated languages as C and C++.

    That's not a liberty I'm aware of.

No one wants to be tracked, but that's not what we're arguing here. GPS is publicly available information, just like court records and property deeds. The judge is making a completely arbitrary distinction and is wrong.

  14. How about you not "share" copywritten materials? on RIAA Offers Amnesty to File Sharers · · Score: 0, Redundant

Just because you can "share" copywritten materials doesn't mean that you are legally permitted to. The RIAA is completely right about this.

Disregarding whether filesharing leads to lower sales or whether the RIAA could support better artists or whether or not the RIAA is approaching this thing like total jackasses, the main thing to remember is that filesharers are violating the law.

It is foolhardy to think that you could flagrantly break a law and suffer no retribution.

  15. It's about giving kids the tools on Perspectives On Games And Violence · · Score: 2, Insightful

Take a good look at the Columbine videos. Those Klebold and Harris learned how to handle those weapons from video games. They learned how to not be afraid of the weapons. They became desensitized to the weapons and the gore which they inflicted upon the students and teachers at Columbine.

Perhaps it wasn't the games that set them off (more like multiple swirlies and wedgies in front of girls), but the violent video games they played gave them the tools to perform their carnage.

If it didn't work so well to desensitize kids to violence, the military wouldn't be using the same type of simulations to train troops.

    Ideas should be Free.

The holding hostage of ideas is completely contrary to the basic natural rights that ideas have. The GPL is one way of fighting for the rights of software, but there really isn't a way to fight for the freedom of ideas.

In this century, the war to free ideas from patents will be waged as long and hard as the war a century ago against slavery. Information slavery is still slavery.

But seriously, the main problem is that these fuel cells can be easily reconfigured to contain highly explosive materials for use as portable bombs. In this highly charged anti-terrorism atmosphere, it is important to make technology as transparent as possible. The more a technology relies on bomb-like batteries or razor-like Flash memory cards, the more likely it becomes that a real terrorist could sneak a truly dangerous device onboard.
