    Dear Slashdot Grammar Nazi,

It is commonly accepted now to use "who" in place of "whom". "Whom" is still ok, but "who" is no longer wrong when used in the same way. So unless you're still using "thy" and "thou" in everyday speech, you have no ground on which to bitch :)

Ah, the wonders of a dynamic language!

This is NOT informative, unless I see a source to prove otherwise...293 million people includes every man, woman, baby, etc. Is the 1050 gal/year the average split across the whole group, or among the driving populace only? If the latter, it's a lot less than 297 billion gallons/year, which seems high to me, but again I have no sources to go by because parent didn't provide a link to where he saw this info.

Just remember, 50% of the population is below average and 93% of all statistics are false.

No doubt, but they do the same thing for someone new to programming. First you write a bunch of code, then you "compile" it and see the result.

Well, for HTML, the "compiler" is the web browser in effect, so instant gratification can be had, moreso even than a "Hello World" program in *insert language here*.

The "official" version was PUBLICALLY released 2 days ago. Mandrake 10.0 Community Edition came out a few months ago, late Feb/early March as I recall. And it most certainly used the 2.6 kernel as its primary.

No offense, but sounds like Mandrake would be a better distro for you, if you're using KDE as the default and installing all the "wrong license" packages (which are already included in Mandrake).

People like you and the article writer don't realize that it takes more than sheer number of pixels to beat 35mm...also, he's talking about a consumer scanner (4000dpi, that's what I got for $300 by Minolta, nice machine) vs. a drum scanner....see http://www.arizonahighways.com/page.cfm?name=Photo _Talk803 for more or http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm for even more.

So low-end consumers will get better quality from film and professionals will too. Mid-range consumers MAYBE can match film, since they can't afford a drum scanner (but that's what the local lab is for). Sorry, but digital's not quite there yet.
