I've been in the very same place you have, and as a Junior in college I actually started my own hedge fund and became an investment adviser. With that being said, a few thousand does not give you many options, but your age allows for 100% risk! Assuming that you have less than $10k, you should look for alternative investments, or look to use the money to start your own company while your in school. $10k is not enough to become a stock trader, but it is enough to learn the Futures market. $10k will not make you rich sitting in Government or Corporate bonds either. Finally, $10k is enough to become a longer term investor, which means doing fundamental analysis in an industry you look, and finding the best of the best. For example, a risky company is Phinder Technologies (PHDTF.OB) they are a penny stock engaged in E-business apps (my fund owns a whopping 6000 shares). Other examples from the are Sirenza Microdevices they make the chips in satellite radio sets, etc. Try to find where humanity is going.
Finally, my fund (http://theopenfund.com) does take in new traders with a minimum capital commitment of $25k, and we train and everything. Currently, we have five traders.
Well, I hope these tidbits at least allow for some thoughts!
As long as we have another Google thread started, what are some stock thoughts. Jim Cramer is advocating this stock upwards of $440 on the basis of forward P/E and a 30% earnings growth. His main thought process is "Think of this stock as a $26 stock going to $35." However, he is not taking options into account. Options hedging strategies on GOOG are extremely costly at near-the-money options, and within two trading days one can become wealthy or poor trading GOOG options.
Anyway, I am a hedge fund manager, and our fund growing increasingly bearish on this puppy as well as the whole U.S. economy, so I just wanted to pique some interest of the/. community. However, we do not have any position in GOOG at this time.
As a hedge fund manager myself, one of our strategies is to target distressed companies in order to turn profits. However, SCO's model of late has been dismal for the product category that they are targetting. For example, a company like Rambus ("RMBS"), which basically makes their money from I.P. regarding memory has staying power as their patents span many products and industries.
On a side note, my hedge fund does not have the resources of taking over a company, but following Eddie Lambert's role with KMart/Sears it would not surprise me if an independent company would make a requisition bid for SCO.
If you have the money, pick up a Tumi Backpack.. You may be able to find a year old, but still new, nylon version at a Tumi store. It'll cost between $150-$300 for the nylon and $400+ for Leather. I've had mine for two years, and i travel about 40 flights/year and it looks like brand new. Also, i can fit my 15" Powerbook and 16.1" Vaio in as well as about 4 books, an ipod, power adapters, sunglasses, passport, checkbooks, and more!
This exploit could also be used by inserting the code into certain applications that render JPEG images while running. Also, email worms that have JPEG images attached with the code could cause mass havoc. Glad im on OSX!
I am surprised that a company like Boeing has not attempted to break into the privatized space arena. It seems like the government regulations/costs are too constricting to focus on space travel from a government perspective. Maybe we'll have an X-Prize to mars within the next 25 years!
The resurgence of gambling in our society fueled by popularity of poker, can have tremendously poor affects on the american economy in the upcoming years. About a month ago, I wrote an article that talked about the future implications to the financial markets if gambling continued to grow.

Oracle's 10g database does not seem to like AMD processors on a linux platform. There is definitely some lag time to a comparable intel proc. Has anyone seen any test results from Oracle of AMD vs. Intel?
I am glad to see that Google is making good use of all that capital they have received by going public. Makes me want to short their stock at its ridiculously high price even more.

Many people criticize cross party candidates by saying that they are creating espionage for one of the running mates.
Do you feel that you are running in this election in order to take votes away from one candidate or another so that the drop in votes will benefit a specific candidate?
The low price growth in China is finally starting to slow, but profit margins are continuing to rise. Companies like SINA Corp have profit increases of nearly 350% for this year alone. China is an inevitable sector of growth in the world economy, which may change a lot of global commerce in the coming years. However, those who have got in early have benefitted greatly. Recent stock analysis on companies like SINA are still looking to much brighter futures, which can only increase profit for Microsoft.
I think I would definitely pay microsoft $0.10 for every time I used M$ Word. Similar to website micropayment systems, I think that big company's as well as startups may benefit from per use charges. I know of many stock analysis sites that do something similar. ie: charge you $5 for each analysis you download, or $5 buys you 50 reloads of the site.
Obviously, no one is going to buy that business knowing that they'll receive imminent death threats! He needs to go back to Marketing 101. On the other hand, he probably could sell the business for a nice profit because of the publicity that it has generated.
I started an affiliate program on my site about a month ago. Now, i have 1000 users and out of those 1000 i only have 2 people giving me referral sign ups. I pay $0.50/signup so i do not think the monetary cost/signup is to low.
What are some suggestions to get my site more affiliates? Thanks, Aj
Can this be a reasonably good statistic? Most of the music that I listen to online either comes from online radio stations, Poisoned (mac app), or iTunes. What clout would this have over any other song statistics?
