    apparently WMP10 in XP SP2 doesn't even give you the option of encoding to MP3
    To clarify, WMP8 and WMP9 let you encode to MP3 if you purchased an add-on 3rd party encode pack. WMP10 and newer include an MP3 encoder from the get-go.
    But your point that WMP cannot DRM MP3 is correct.

    No, it's really not. There's utterly no option to put DRM on the MP3 files, ripped or not ripped with WMP. Your friend is confused and you're slighting Microsoft for something that is visibly not true and never has been true. Try it: if you select Rip to MP3 or WAV, "Copy protect music" is unchecked and greyed out. Not possible to do this even if you want to, and never has been. =)

    Your exact comment was "mp3 ripping is new to WMP 10". MP3 ripping was "new" to WMP8. "Free MP3 Encoder" was new to WMP10. And even that's fudging the line if you know the difference between the Advanced vs Professional flavors of FhG, since the FhG Advanced codec has shipped with MS/WM for about 7 years now. I did work with FhG on their ACM encoder back when it was created... this is an area I hope I know.

    So yeah: I do think your comment was overrated, and misleading. Mp3 ripping is not new to WMP10, and that "a fraction of the copies of WMP" who can do it is probably every user on any supported configuration.

    Again, I will respect that you're clarifying that you meant "free mp3 ripping was new to WMP10" (which is also not true, as WinSuperSite and others covered way back when in WMP8 beta days), but still... at face value I think what you said was misleading, and we should both know that people like to run off and repeat broken facts ad infinitum. As such, I like my facts straight-up, no chaser.

    Well, just to dispel some potential cynicism-
    There's a finite number of people testing/releasing the software. The obvious Killer Download for most users is the player. There's a huge drop-off in interest comparatively when looking at the codec packages, but MS puts them together anyways and ships them when the involved teams sign off on them. There is no other associated cause for delay - they're put on the release treadmill as soon as they are signed off on.
    If you're seeing any long delay before a release of stand-alone codecs, then your odds are 90% that it's technical or 10% that it's resource [personnel] contention, and that's about it.

    Presumably you were warned that either the taskbar player or the player itself was running during the install. The shell can't unload loaded taskbar binaries instantly, so if you had the taskbar player running, you would end up rebooting. It's a known issue that people are looking at for the future.

    Believe me, any reboot caused gets heartily scrutinized and people get shot if the reboots were avoidable. If the reboots weren't avoidable, they still get shot. In either case, the survivors get to write a document proposing how this gets fixed for the future. :)

    Note that WMP6 doesn't handle 'LegacyDisable' properly (and WMP9 uses 'LegacyDisable'), so if you're using WMP9 and want to switch back to WMP6, the steps would be:

    Start->Run: wmplayer.exe
    Tools:Options:File Types
    Uncheck whatever you're changing the association to WMP6 on.
    Start->Run: mplayer2.exe
    View->Options->Formats
    Select all media types you don't play in winamp.

    It's probably not too critical, but I thought I'd point it out anyways for the WMP6-lovers. :)
