He should never have asked for the link removal, and never should have involved police in what is a civil matter. If the mayor wanted to hire a private attorney to handle the civil defamation suit, that's on his own dime. What he did instead was abuse his power.
Never, EVER, should a public official use the police to investigate any kind of political dissident conducting any kind of "smear" campaign, unless there is clear evidence of violent action (IE, calls for bombing City Hall). VERY few states have criminal defamation laws on the books, it is in nearly every case a civil matter.
Your post reads to me like you're allowing your bias against the message of this woman to shade the morality of law. Thankfully you aren't a judge.
I repeat, the mayor was completely 100% wrong for issuing any kind of C&D and having the police launch a criminal investigation. It was an abuse of power and I hope the man loses his next election based on these abuses.
Also, I take issue with your line "If people trying to conduct a nationalistically motivated slur campaign back down I think that's probably a good thing." I hate the GOP, but I hate more the accusations of "nationalism" from the Liberal side on this issue even more. There's nothing racist or nationalistic about being against individuals subverting the process everyone not sharing our border have to go through in order to enter our nation. To give you a nerd analogy, what you're basically saying is that it's wrong of an admin to block out a hax0r who exploits a back hole into your box. You'd rather the admin just gave him his own account on the box instead since he must really want one bad enough to hax in.
Something tells me you huffed too much paint as a child.
In 1988, the shells worked. In 2004 they didn't. Chemical weapons have a shelf life, we already knew that going into the war, and what we found were inert.
You have the answer to break a filibuster? You have a way to push a bill through the Senate and override the veto without holding 2/3rds majority?
Please share. Because that's completely impossible within the law of our Constitution. What response exactly do you expect them to take when the law has their hands tied?
Or are you one of those who blame the party who has only been in power for 2 years for being legally unable to fix what the GOP controlled Congress and Executive have done? You vastly underestimate the complexity of the situation.
Thank you. Finally someone with a working logic unit.
And for the record, I'm registered with no party, a total independent. I vote how I wish. I'm just sick of hearing GOP trash lie constantly. The past two decades in politics have truly sucked.
They hoped to get more seats than they did. They weren't lying, they just didn't win enough to be able to reverse all of the damage a fully GOP Congress and White House had inflicted.
So no, I'm going to again repeat the fact that you need to learn how our Government works or shut up. Since you can't seem to grasp the point that you campaign on what you would do if you could, which is what the Dems did, but in the end they couldn't end the war because they didn't gain enough in the Senate to pull it off. That != lie.
51:49 isn't an effective majority. You need 2/3rds of the Senate in order to control it, otherwise the GOP can and has completely shut down any bill that they don't like.
Please, (re)take high school Civics and learn about how our Congress works before posting anything political.
The Democrats only have one half of Congress, everything they try to pass in the House gets destroyed by the deadlocked Senate, where the Democrats do not hold an overwhelming majority. After that, they have to try to get past a President that is among the most stubborn ever. Besides this, they've only held it for 2 years now, and have had to try to clean up the mess from the previous 8 years of a fully Republican controlled Congress.
Did you fail Civics class in high school, or did you just forget how our government works?
If they had went with Gecko I would have liked it better. At least then there would be some bennefit to Firefox but as it is, we just have one more browser to test against, and yet, it uses Webkit but does it render 100% exactly like any other browser using Webkit, or will they extend that or make changes that causes it render things differently?
And the fact that they used Webkit, based on KHTML, my favorite browser, is exactly why I love Chrome so much. They can't change things in the renderer and not release the changes backstream.
If you claimed you were going to shoot my wife, but she never gets shot, why the hell would the police be there? The shells they found were "inert" like a bullet would be "blank", there was no payload. If the police showed up and all you had were blanks and no gun to trace the bullet that killed my wife to, then yeah that wouldn't even be considered as there was no proof that you had the murder weapon. That's kinda how our legal system works.
There were no weapons that were a threat to us or anyone else. The shells found were old shells we had given him long ago and the payload was dead, so thus he could not cause any harm with those shells.
So again, if the shells you are claiming were the "WMDs" we went to war for were not actually capable of creating the "MD" part, then you merely have "Ws", which after the past 8 years having our own W in office I can see is a bit scary, but not enough to justify being invaded.
Now, unless you want to actually back up your inane claims that we found the WMDs but for some crazy reason Bush never made a huge deal about them, I'm going to mark you as "troll" and move on.
Uhm. No, they weren't WMDs, because they were inert. They could not cause Mass Destruction, which is the "MD" part of "WMD". They were just big hunks of steel.
Besides, chemical weapons were not the "mushroom cloud" Bush was talking about to scare us, nor was it the "Yellow cake" or "aluminum centrifuge tubes" they were screaming about. Bush was talking very specifically about Saddam building nukes.
THERE WERE NO WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION FOUND IN IRAQ. PERIOD.
I think there's some quote relevant here....something about forgetting history and repeating it....
I've read recently, your memory is affected by the state your mind is in when learning information. Thus, if you stay up all night cramming for a test with caffeine to keep you going, you're only going to be able to recall that information you crammed while ingesting a large amount of caffeine. Same with pot, if you learn to do things while high then you have to be high to recall that information.
Personally, I fall under the caffeine catagory, I cannot do shit in my job as an administrator unless I've drank some coffee. Otherwise the information just won't materialize and I have a hard time remembering commands. Yeah, I've smoked up my share on weekends in social situations but quit when it started to make me too anxious. I didn't learn shit while high so it doesn't affect my day to day life.
Now, consider a stoner who lives nearly his entire day-to-day life high, and it's no wonder they can't function sober.
Or just make everything on MySpace/Facebook attached to a complete alias with zero factual information like I have set, and when adding your personal friends just tell them your name in the message so they know it's you.
I started using the internet 15 years ago, and in all of that time if you Google my name all you get are mailing list postings to the LKML and other software mailing lists, which helps given that's the field I'm in. My personal life is far from being so uptight but I do all of that under aliases and none of it is easily tied to my name.
No, you're the old type that thinks he and his like-minded stoners are somehow more "enlightened" than everyone else.
I'm not one of those types that hates on drug users, and it's not like I haven't tried things before. At one job where I managed a fast food shift I allowed my workers to smoke up behind the dumpster, because high was the only way they functioned. That doesn't mean it wasn't completely fucking sad that they had to get high in order to function as a fry cook, nevermind do anything else.
Most stoners are in fact completely useless when sober.
The Stride chewing gum commercials actually make me crack up. There's just something so primally hilarious about a ram coming out of no where and hitting a guy in the nuts....
Yes, I'll preempt the Idiocracy comparisions now and admit it. I can't help but laugh at some random person getting hit in the nuts and being theoretically removed from the gene pool.
I've never had a problem with the Dell's I've used, and I normally build my own computers anyway. Their laptops have always seemed solid to me. I had been dreaming of an Asus but I quite like this thing here.
God don't get me started about Amerin. Ever since they bought up IL Power they've done a great job screwing everything up in the St L metro area. The ice storm that hit us had most of us without power for weeks.
Combine that with the asinine amount they charge for gas and electric compared to what Missouri residents pay, and it was a no-brainer for me to just get the hell out of IL altogether and move to MO. Least over here they regularly smack Amerin across the face to keep them from overcharging.
If that's what your concience tells you, that's fine.
I just really don't care enough to bother feeling bad about someone whom I know neither the name, face, or location of. I'm just chuckling at the stories presented.
It's not acceptable to kick over wheelchairs or trip blind people because you are directly harming the person. They anonymized the emails so we have no idea who sent them in, even if they did it's a username on the internet. I'm not standing in front of the nutbag that typed all of that up and laughing in their faces. I'm chuckling at some anonymous ravings.
The other consideration you might not have taken is that it could be a completely normal, creative person. I've done similar things before just exercising writing styles, writing about nonsense situations for no reason other than to try out something new.
I really love armchair CEO's. It's so cute how they think they can run a business better than someone that has managed to stay alive since 1975 in the video game business, a business that has eaten almost all other companies within it. Very few companies from the old days are still privately held and producing as they did before. Nintendo has been alive, and hugely profitable in making video games and consoles longer that many of us have been alive, and are still wiping the floor with two of the biggest companies in the world in the marketplace due to their relative late arrival to the industry.
I expect you'll call me a fanboy as well, when the truth is I was a biggest Sega and Sony fan than Nintendo, but I recognize that Nintendo is kicking everyone's ass right now.
Now, unless you helm a multi-national company that can kick the shit out of bigger names like Sony and Microsoft in the marketplace, please shut the fuck up.

Seriously, are you really that stupid?

Here's a hint: It's not what you said, but how you said it.
I've never had a problem with the Dell's I've used, and I normally build my own computers anyway. Their laptops have always seemed solid to me. I had been dreaming of an Asus but I quite like this thing here.
No, he said run the country. Note the lack of "into a deep, deep hole" after those words.
Combine that with the asinine amount they charge for gas and electric compared to what Missouri residents pay, and it was a no-brainer for me to just get the hell out of IL altogether and move to MO. Least over here they regularly smack Amerin across the face to keep them from overcharging.

Actually, if you look at this story on Baidu, the names are in there.
But I'm not reading the story on Baidu, I'm reading it on /.
See the distiction?

Yeah, it's obvious then that you never played WoW.
This isn't a troll, it's true.
