Do you happen to have the ps file? Instead of a bunch of/.'ers hitting the site to convert it, and arrousing suspicion, if one person has done so, please post or email the ps copy to me.

this was a few months ago, but Pat has said that, yes, debs ROCK, and will be implementing something along those lines a few releases from now. Now, I can't speak for everyone, but personally, I like the fact that I can communicate directly to Pat, get a response, and sometimes get things changed. It's nice having one person who actually maintains the distro, and that person actually talks to us directly, asking us really what we want. For example, this release, the pre-compiled kernel has no multi-processor support built in, as a result of a vote he put up on the message board. We, the users, decided what we wanted. I can't say more.
I just wanna know the speed in a typical evironment like my home, which is where *I* will be using it. Now, I would understand a test like what you proposed, for benchmarking in an industrial situation, but I don't believe that was the intent of the author.
...'cept I take it to the point of buying (or offering to 'dispose of') old electronics. I have a basement room full of IBM PS/2's, 386 clones, I have a 8088, all manner of 'junk'. All for the sake of taking it apart and copying the datapaths and researching the chipsets, and studying them (I swear, honey, I'm learning from this, soon I will be able to make cool stuff outta this)
Goddamn, I am a geek. I used to be cool. What happened? I was in a punk band!! I was an artist!! Now, I'm just a geek.
The new craze is this IP (two NEW magic characters!) suit stupidity
Well, how about a class action against DoubleClick and all other ad agencies for using and selling our "IP". IP being our browsing habits, internet usage, etc. If that isn't "IP", I don't know what else could be legitimately considered "IP". How bout it? anyone with me?
Bull. My install of Slakware 7.2: Kde 2.1, GNOME whatever-the-stable-version-is (I don't use it much), Gimp 1.2(::Photoshop), QT-egcs-glibc-gtk +support for writing in Perl, Java, [insert_favorite_language_here](::Visual Studio), StarOffice 5.2, etc. Total diskspace after install? 1 gig.
I thought that POKE was an AppleBasic command. I remember using 'POKE' somenumber to clear the screen on my Apple IIc (which I still have. Gotta get it out sometime and play with it. Have no software for it though. The IIc doesn't come with an OS or anything, just Basic in ROM).
This sounds like a great solution because Windows doesn't look to be on its deathbed quite yet, and there's this odd backlash against Linux on the desktop.
Exactly. I received an email reply from Compaq. I had asked for Linux drivers for all functions of the motherboard and for the Internet keyboard that came with my shitty Presario, otherwise I will never buy anything from them ever again, and suggest that my family and friends do the same. The reply? "The Presario model is intended to be for home desktop use, not business use. Therefore, we do not support Linux use on the Presario model computers." ??????This is from Compaq, supposed supporter of Linux. Support my ass. They're just "supporting" it because IBM and Dell is. They don't want to be left out. I love Linux on my desktop. While I don't say that everyone should use it, I want to and I don't see how vendors can tell us what OS to use on the desktop. I will never buy another Compaq. I will always build my own (this comp that I am writing from is hand-built by me).
Violent video games are not a good way to be preparing for "real life".
No, thats not the point they are making. Actually, you are correct. To base your outlook of the world on Quake is not good, but the point of the argument is that they (the judges) are afraid that by upholding that law, they could reinforce the idea of censoring everything until children are 18. Seriously, how many people remember Wolfenstein 3D? I was about 12 (I think, can't remember what age I was), and I thought that it was the coolest thing. It was close enough to real life to make if appear as if it was, thus releasing that instinct that ALL humans have to kill (reference:Freud. No, I don't believe in everything he says, but this theory *seems* on-mark) in a safe environment. But, that's my opinion, and of course everyone is entitled to one. But, if I choose to allow my son to be exposed to that, that is MY wish, and I have every right to that. I don't need some law saying otherwise.
Wow, I thought that this mayhappen once people got wind of this (or just put all the peices together) but I seriously doubted it. Guess I may be wrong.
Well, welcome to Linuxland, fasten yr seatbelt and invest in some patience, since you have been using Windows all this time, there are some adjustments you have to make. And a lot of re-installing and tweaking. Don't get me wrong, I've been using Linux for over a year, I started on Slackware and thats where I still am (I've tried most of the major distros), and I absolutely love it. But, I am not such a militant anti-M$ Linux user. I still hate the company, but Win2k is actually decent (Course, its very UNIX-like), and I understand your position. Just a warning, as Tux's beauty isn't so easy to see at first. So, I encourage you to take your time, buy O'Reilly's "Running Linux" and, since you're a programmer, I suggest "Beginning Linux Programming" from Wrox Press. (Don't let the "Beginning" part scare you off. Linux is a very different beast, and you need to become familiar with the philosophy to program effectively. A good portion of Linux's speed comes from the frequent usage of shared libraries.) As for a distro, take your pick, check out the distro's sites to learn what each flavor is about, and head over to Cheapbytes
and pick up your choice distro for pretty much the cost of shipping (or if you have a CD-Burner, download it). I wish you luck, and let us know if you have any questions.
You prove that ignorance is bliss. And your denial doesn't hurt me any. I've wasted enough time trying to educate, but I'm afraid you are a poor student. If you can't understand something, you deny it exists. Fine. Don't ridicule me because you don't understand. Now I'm being charitable. C Pungent
Read the reply I posted to the guy below. You might actually learn something, so next time you don't have to act so ignorant. It applies to this argument too. Regardless of what you think should be the law, it isn't. Just because you publish a work of art or whatever doesn't give you full control over its usage. You only have the right to control it under the terms of this law. Don't like it? Don't publish it. This is the law. Sorry.
You can't see it, so it doesn't exist. Hmmm. Just because it doesn't resemble an EULA doesn't mean it isn't there. Go read laws pertinent to copyright law. Granted, I don't believe it says "license", that was just the wording I chose. And, if you actually READ the copyright notice at the beginning of a book, it states, "...Except as permitted under the Copyright Act of 1976, no portion of this book may be reproduced....."blah blah blah. Now, go here, and read 107 and 108. Read the whole thing. Fair use.I think that my arguement constitutes "fair use". As for the license, well, just because you are passing it up doesn't mean you aren't bound by it.
Read the article earlier about the congressman, talking about "Fair-use". You CAN make as many copys for personal use as you want, as long as you legally own a one copy. They can't force you to buy multiple copies if you already own a license to use/listen/read it. Learn the copyright law before posting about it.
I am sick of people complaining that video games are the cause of all the violence. Ok. This is my opinion, so remember that before hitting with the flames. I rarely ever post, but this is a topic that I cannot allow ingorance to run rampant on. First of all, you are missing all the scientific studies that prove that there is no direct connection between violent and games. Now, I know someone is going to reply with that popular study that states that there is, but that is not the full study and that study has been proven to have been biased. I can't cite the reference off hand, and my point is not to convince you about that. My point is: don't believe everything that you read. The study in question was one of many that the Senate looked into, and the one that produced the results that they wanted to hear was the one "selected" to be "true". That does not mean that it was. The other studies showed that yes, boys who were exposed to the violent content (this was TV, no video games) did, in fact, choose to act violently to resolve their problems. However, when those same boys were then shown to use compromise as a resolution and were discipined when using force (violence) to resolve a conflict, they actually responded with a much more non-violent approach. This means basic, good parenting actually meant more to the children and had greater influence on their behavior than the TV shows did. Parents who turn their head or glorify violence produce violent children, not video games and TV. So, what about the popular study? Well, as soon as the behavioral pychologists that did the study followed up on the "violent" boys to see how many ended up commiting violent crimes and exhibited otherwise violent behavior, they found that only one of the thirty actually grew up to be violent. Funny how the Senate doesn't announce that when "dealing" with the recent school violence.
Look, I'm a father too. I'm also young. I grew up loving violent TV shows and Wolfenstein. Today, I play Rogue Spear on a daily basis. I got my ass kicked nearly everyday in school and sometimes at home for being a geek, art-nerd, and an intelligent human being. And never once did I fight back. I never backed down. I faced them and insulted them as they kicked the shit outta me. But I also had the sense to use my brain in a conflict, and compromise, thanks to my role model. No, it wasn't my parents. A musician. But that isn't the point. All I'm saying is read between the lines before making a decision that isn't going to affect your life, but the life of your child. Don't assume the answer is to lock it away from them. Be a parent.
Ummm, they did say DESERT island, meaning NO females. And if they were, don't you think there was a reason why there were only females around? (AMAZON WOMEN).
And for punk bands, try the Germs, the Melvins (metal&punk in one), and Black Flag. I don't know if you had heard of those b4, but they are the "old school" punk bands (except the Melvins are still around). I have a million bands to suggest to you, but those are yr best bets if you haven't checked them out. As far as computers go, I don't wanna say anything cuz I am not a programmer yet. I'm teaching myself and its hard when you have no one to ask questions to. Thing is, you REALLY remind me of myself at yr age, (I can't really say I am much older than you, being only 19) except I was into music and art, and my parents thought that the Internet was nothing but porn, so they wouldn't even buy a computer, lest the porn be magically beamed into it. There was a similar post above about this.
I would, but for lack of time/no webserver. And Geocities sucks. Send the judges nice little emails pointing to it. Lets see their reaction!!
