The only way that can actually be true is if MS is paying DELL $$$ which lowers the cost. Like some companies have deals with AOL so they basically give you a free PC if you sign up for 2 years of AOL.
I assume there so many patents x-lic'd used within OS/2 and given the (assumed) lack of meta data about which code is covered (or not), it would be hard to produce a clean vers.
We need patent lic. that is as of right like a jukebox music (you can play any record in your juke box and the copyright lic. fee is fixed).
I'd like ALL OF this to be FREE, but here is a workable middle ground... For software, computers, etc..
A fund to help users, patent holders and fighters..
Free patent use for all non-commerical uses
Fixed rate for per application to cover all patents (say yearly $25)
If you hold patents you can register w/ the clearing house to get your % of the $$.
If you fight a patent and win making it void and if $$ had been prev. paid as royalties, your legal bill(s) could also be covered by the "fund." (cost is >$1 million , so not sure how many of those can be handled..
I'm a bad typist and always making errors but I love the way the reported called what I assume is a TEXT message a TEST message...
"have the IM message forwarded as a test message (a separate mobile phone technology that works in similar ways to IM on computers), Saltzman suggests."
There are hundreds of things you can get copyright protection for... when you register you have to register for EACH one..
I sell: Computer, Monitors, Hats & T-Shirts, etc., etc., and you would be protected for those, but not for "underwear.." (stealthy underwear or otherwise...)
I would rather that all sites who want to make direct economic profit from their site, charge for it.. and if I don't want to pay, they could give me a choice to allow ads in exchange for my viewing those ads. IMHO, I would, should I take that option, be seeing less ads more targeted to my own interests and I would either perfer that or to simply pay.
Sure, I mean it could be vaporware and a nice way to seperate 18 mill (US or Canidan?) from some VCs...
However, given that they have narrowed their focus (from a general purpose machine) to a special purpose machine using (they say) todays level of technology, they have a good chance..
Known and working tech + narrow problem = Engineering + Marketing = A working product
In the mid 80's (if not earlier) 85 or 86, you could hook a MAC with Hypercard to a Video DISC player (analog) and via serial connection use button and other methods in the Hypercard "stack" to control the play back of sound, music, video, etc.
They are making a bet. On one side of the bet is basically "prototype early and often" and if you come up w/ something good, we can run with it. On the other side is we are really focused on doing the work that we are schedule to do (not so fun) but it pays the bills and that is the job you signed on for.
That is yahoo is mature (er) than Google and perhaps google has the $$$ to allow 20% of time to be spent "any which way" perhaps yahoo is more focused on delivering the current product and commentments.
The question becomes when Yahoo does say YES, what type of resources they provide?
You could aruge that GMAIL could be a LOT better if they had put more time into it, rather than treating it like a hobby. The contact list still doesn't work correctly, it can't sort by SIZE, etc, etc. And if you want to find a Movie Time your better off on yahoo than google...
Also because they have "commerical partners" who either pay for that access or who through their business relationship seek some aspect of "exclusive".. my 2 cent.s
it would have been nice to link to ITP.. I went there too... The Thesis there are "final projects" typically.. while I wrote about the future of advertising, someone else could produce some video or some flash animation.
The program focuses now on Physical Media, ATMs are a good example of that.. but some art work you hang on the wall and it interacts with you as you walk past it, would be an other example..
Anyway, i'm not really sure I see any strong applications for this..
This is only a good thing in as much as Redmond need more prospective.. Assuming he runs Linux at his Desktop it will not be the first 'Nix box there.. nor the last..
The point is here, any person born in the last century or so, understand glass can easily break.
But does the average person understand how fragile or easy to hack some locks are?
The point being that MS Windows from the non technical computer user prospective is highly secure and is made by the best, smartest most innovative computer company in the world!! Plus they have that "auto update thing that is always asking to restart the computer.. and now a firewall thing that stops some sites from poping up." So it's my computer secure? How can clicking on some ad, really damage my computer?
But your analogy is flawed.. it's not someone who smashs my windows. Everyone knows that's possible, and hopes their neighbors will "hear" it and call the police..
It's more like having a house w/ a lock, on the front door or back door and your key works and only your key works, then some day someone shows up, touches the lock in some special way (control-alt-delete, types in Administrator and no password) and gets entry to your house..
Or its like your home builder telling you this is the most secure house he/she ever built and then every night when you go to bed your hear noises but it takes a while to figure out all the kids in the area are having a party in your basement every night because the home builder left some "trap doors" as well as just some flawed construction around the foundation..
If banks didn't have LOCKS and they basically left the money out were people could take it, then yes, bank-robbing would be part of the normal business model..
The real problem being that people THINK by using MS software, AOL or whatever that they are some how protected.
Look in a few years for MS to say:
a) we are the best b) we have tried everything we could do c) we are failing d) the country is at great risk E) we need TRUSTED computing..
Cars and Computer are historically both big ticket items. Cars do retain their value over a number of years, while most computer rapidly go towards zero, even Apples.
I buy a new computer every year, paying about $500 each time and junk the old one after removing anything of value. At that price I find I roughly stay 12 to 18 months behind in technology and at a steady rate of $500 I find that's a good deal.
We are agreed that is why things and how things used to work.. They want everything a tort or a contract and they probably want to be able to sue any virus maker or any one else who doesn't tow their party line for using that interface... Clearly they don't want open standards in the since of non-royal based and/or truly open spec (w/ out EULA).
it makes since that they would agree to license the info to other for profit company rather than release the protocals into the public domain... I mean that would be good for us and their customers, but clearly it would be bad for them.
It's "their property" and forcing them to give it away is hard even for most governments. Forcing them to license it to some 3rd (for profit) organization isn't evil...
Every day passwords should be easy to recall even by those with some memory damage. The real issue is something like a HOME ROUTER which you might SETUP in 2004 and NOT have need to access again until 2007 and you don't want to leave it with the DEFAULT password..
So in that case writing it down, is not crime against anyone..
Writing down the password for your Swiss Bank account or your PayPal account and leaving it some place like your wallet on the same page that contains the account #/info, that would be stupid.
Keeping a list of your critical passwords in your bank VAULT wouldn't be a bad thing. Keeping them in your GLOVE Box, would..
Audio feedback came to my mind right away as well... I would add temp sensors for detecting above normal opperating temps.. I wonder what else is possible?

Reusing footage didn't mean they were cheap; just meant that level of production was expensive...

A lot of students at NYU ITP did these types of projects..
There are / were 100's of "appls" like ABC news had a group putting out this type content, and lots of art projects, Etc.

That article seems to be missing any information on QC using tunneling.

Profit Yes, but given the many HILLS and Valleys that make up SF, it might also be a great test case for what ever technology they are using.
Some would consider this good risk management; start w/ some very hard cases and see if you can handle it.

Money talks loud; loud enough to game the system. I mean, look at all the $$ the copyright holders stand to make vs. not make..
But still they accepted a scheme that put their works into the public domain; that was their devils bargin; they should give the devil his due...
Audio feedback came to my mind right away as well... I would add temp sensors for detecting above normal opperating temps.. I wonder what else is possible?
