I have been running Win2000 PRO. The one MS doesn't recommend for "consumers." (Consumers should use ME or XP).

It has been very stable on 3 machines over 2 years; I had NO crashes; on par with my NetBSD and other 'Nix boxes.

I just got a new machine that had XP Home Pre-Installed, and I've given it a test drive for the last 3 weeks.

Guess what, at least 1 crash a DAY! No wonder they didn't want consumers using 2000; Going from 98 or ME -> XP would be feel good for users; going from Win2000 -> XP wouldn't feel good!!

At least I have options if I need an OS that doesn't crash out; it's too bad MS hasn't given consumers that same choice!!

IMHO that's enough tax! 50 years is enough for a copyright. The only other reasonable position is 50 years or the author's life span + 10 year which ever is greater.. SO a young artist like Ms. Spears might eek out 70 to 100 years on her copyrights..

"Look you guys asked to do these things with our code and we did them. So you know we can very well open up our source, so you can't have it both ways. If you want Microsoft's continued cooperation, don't go trashing us and pushing open source."

Besides the need for a "car" alarm to leave something like that out side of a building in NYC, there is something more important.. There is no place to leave something like that outside a building in NYC... assuming you can tell which seg is yours.

Image a big building with 1000 people working inside; we have 100's of these in each large city. There are notany parking spaces; imagine 1000 little seg's all sitting on the sidewalk waiting for their owners; likewise when the owners travel back to their high rise apartments... although perhaps they can be locked up in the bike room!

Which makes me think the real issue about being able to travel on sidewalks has to do with parking them there as well!

You talked about "Biz speak" which is no different than "Geek speak" short hand to help those people with in a field communicate with each other. It's also hard to manage people, work with customers and even when you do all the right things it doesn't always come out right (Apple vs. Microsoft vs. Amiga).

It' also hard to stay current e.g., buggy whips and wooden airplanes.

Plus basically most people have some level of disfunction (mentally) all minor stuff for the most part, but when you put all of that together in a single company letting their disfunction hang out...

    That's my two cents...

Another feature was that the memory was always powered (I don't think it was FLASH or anything fancy), but basically you could just turn the thing off and when you turned it back on it was exactly where it had been left (e.g., editing some file).

In the case of Replay, Mr. "TOG" fails to point out that the product was sold with the clear expectation that it would be ad supported. Unlike the TIVO, which has a purchase price and a MONTHLY fee, the Replay only has a purchase price. If he or anyone else didn't want the ads, they should have bought the Tivo.

That the ads showed up only when you pressed pause and even then a few seconds later, so you can actually see that the pause as worked, was great information design as far as I'm concerned. It didn't interrupt the function of the unit and it didn't intrude into the watching of any show. It didn't stop menus' from working and it didn't interfere with anything... The alternative would be to stop the show while your watching it and to insert an ad of their own.

I would speculate since Replay has left the commercial marketplace and the collapse of ad supported business models has more to do with the feature's removal than anything else.

Replay has been the best product I've owned. 3 times they have added major new features and I didn't have to lift a finger and I didn't have to buy anything. To those who would rather control the feature set of their consumer electronic products, the choice is easy. All the technology is out there for you to "roll your own." For the rest of the world having a product that's easy to use, easy to install and upgrades itself on its own, is a huge boon!
