Granted, there are a lot of movies made based off games that are crap. But then, look at all the ones that WEREN'T based on that are crap! Would Tomb Raider have been better if it was called "Dig Deep" or something and the main character was named Maria? Granted, TR was not a "good" movie, but it was a fun movie. The problem, I think, with game movies is everyone already has an impression of what they think it should be like. Its the same as reading the Tom Clancy novel first, and then seeing Clear and Presant Danger. Its not going to be as good because you already know the story. Same with playing the games. I never played Tomb Raider, but I had fun watching the movie.
Well, if you read the second one (Book of Ti'ana)first, then the first one (Book of Atrus) second, and the read the Book of D'Ni it all makes cronological sense. Personally I liked the first two better then the last one. But thats just me.
I'm sorry, but IMHO, DBZ is a truely worthless series. Granted, I've only seen a few episodes and don't really know the "story," but I do find it amusing how they get more powerful simply by getting upset. That, and the fact that while they are hurling huge forces around nothing really seems to come of it. Place the fact that the planet that should blow up in three min took OVER TWO WEEKS to do so, the characters have no dimension, the plot is pathetic, and all the other nonsense in it and then yeah, you may have a movie in there somewhere. Don't get me wrong, I like a good anime fight, but come on people, grow up.
I think one of the biggest problems here is the fact that most of the people in Congress have little or no technical education. I'd be suprised if half of them can even turn a computer on. If they are at my mom's level where they can get it on, surf the web, and write a letter, then thats a bit better. But as soon as you bring up encryption, P2P, hardware specs, etc they are lost. Even if we set aside the fact that most of these people have gotten huge amounts of cash from the industry, we have to realize that for the most part they have no idea what is going on and what the repocussions could be. All they hear is "People are stealing our movies! Built in copyright protection will stop the bastards!" but they have no clue as why it will or will not work, what other areas it will affect, etc. Personally I would urge everyone to write their congressperson and help to educate them, both on the plus and down sides. If we let our government be run by ignorant morons, how can anything good get done?
You're right on the money there. Look at all the past instances where people tried to proctect digial content. DVDs were cracked by a kid in his spare time, high end programs that require hardware dongels are now traded at will, "copy protected" CDs can easily be recreated by simply using the digital outputs on most players mid range players, WinXP was unlocked before it was even on the shelves. From the attitude around here, it seems like most of the free code writers are pissed off. I give it a week a MOST before this thing would be cracked and trading on the net would be thriving again. Yes, artists should get paid for their works. After all, if they are cool we want them to make more cool stuff. However, this attempt will be simply futile.
I think he's saying that if the PC was a more secure device for delivering movies the studios would be more willing to start delivering movies. That is where the "more choice" comes from. Granted, you can probably find most any movie you want to on the net as it is, but not legally. Personally I don't think his idea will be doable. We need to look at what he promotes to do: change the PC system to fit the copyright needs of the MPAA. Now, this may just be something as simple as a new DVD type drive to read the movies, but I have an odd feeling noone would buy it. Look at the CC Divx flop. A few people may buy it and figure out how to rip the files off anyway, just like DVD. They could add a checksum device into the processor, but those can be avoided, hacked, or mimiced with little effort. Same with something like a dongle, which today fails to protect programs like Lightwave. As we can see, there doesn't appear to be anything at this point that can protect these movies. Even if they managed to protect the media, once we can see the image we can record it, even if it is only with a camcorder. There is simply no way to protect movies from being copied.
How would the pages get currupted? True, one of the sectors they were written on could turn bad, but this could happen on a nice shiny factory sealed drive too. I'm thinking that if in the unlikely event that the sector did turn bad, when it tried to page off that sector it wouldn't be able to and you'd get an invalid page fault error or something else interesting, not this magical changed data off a torn track. Memory can get currupted without even getting paged out. And besides, we're not coming over to your house armed with Dremels and hacksaws. We KNOW it could kill the drive, we KNOW it voids our warrenty, so stop worrying so much.
I understand. And again, this just reiterates that you shouldn't do this to a drive you care about. A $10 2gig set up as a swap drive works wonderfully, and takes work from your nice drives extending their life. So in fact, this could save you money in the long run in addition to making your case look cool.:)
Granted a basement is not a clean room, but it CAN be done, I did it myself in my kitchen. Indeed, having a window in your drive and then covering it with metal is stupid, but then you look at the pic at the end of the article and you can see the side mounted drives just fine. I know lots of people with case windows and mounting one of these on the bottom of the case would be no problem. You can't really see your CPU cooler through those either but people seem to like the shiny or colored ones.

You're cutting the top peice far from the body and spindles of the drive, foo, nothing falls into the drive. As for the plastic wrap idea, I found its better to put it first in a static proof bag and then into a ziploc bag. I also polish the edges and wipe the whole top with an alcohol wipe to get rid of any stray dirt. And again, only an idiot would do this to a drive they really needed, but its perfect for all those useless 1 and 2 gig drives.
Noone is suggesting that you do this your mission critical brand new 160GB drive. I did this to a 2gig (and submitted the details to Overclockers.com weeks before they posted their version, but they never posted mine. Punks!) and I use it as a swap drive. Yes, you would be a moron to do it to your only system drive, but if you have a spare or two laying around its a nifty little mod. Also, the RF noise everyone is yelling about thus far has not been a problem at all. What about all the unshielded magnetic fields your 10 case fans are generating?
While I hate to see the TNG stuff die, it is about time. All of the characters are getting pretty old (its getting harder and harder to be convinced that Data is an ageless android) and such. Maybe they'll do an Enterprise movie next, hopefully without the crappy intro music. I don't think I'd mind a movie off DS9 or Voy, but the problem is that people have already started to forget about them. It would take a lot of effort to get them back on their feet. As to the last episode of Voy, I thought it was FAR better then the teary eyed, sing songs of hope, slow pan across everyone's face crappy ending of DS9.
Some distribution sites are better then others for both FedEx and UPS. I have heard stories of damaged goods from both, but in different locations. In my case, the local UPS is horrible. They actually had video of workers DROP KICKING packages off the truck! FedEx, on the other hand, tends to get me my packages without a dent or scratch. Now, at my parent's house in the next state its reversed. Saddly, most online retailers (the only real time I use shipping comps) usually only ship with one or the others. Personally I'd love to have more options, and even get USPS in there as they tend to have good handlers and are cheaper too.
Personally I'm wondering how long it will take before someone writes and emu for this thing. PCs will have the power very soon, if they don't already, and its basicly DirectX and Windows, shouldn't be too hard to crack. Also going the other way shouldn't be too tough either: turn your $400 XBox into a normal PC to play with and compile linux kernels.

Here here! I hate when I accidently come accross some horrid site that flicks open 20 new browser windows. Of course the simple answer is "turn javascript off!" but some sites actually use it well. Also, there would be nothing stopping people from spanning articles and such over hordes of pages. Granted, after a while people will get pissed and just not go there anymore. Also, I'm already paying to connect to the net, I'm not sure I'd want to pay more once I'm there. Personally, while this does sound like a fairly good idea, I'd like to see some more creative thinking on how to fund web sites. Perhaps lease out extra server space, bandwith, or processing time?
Indeed. My PC is my DVD movie player and I'd rather not hear a fan hum during a tense moment of silence between our hero and his nemsis. Yeah, I could go and get a real DVD player, but those things cost money! I lowered my case noise in a couple ways. First, when I got my GeForce 2 MX I got one without a fan. My old TNT2's fan would get out of blanace and make a HELL of a racket. Now I have two fans: PS and CPU. Also, I added 1/8" plastic panels to the front, top and both sides. Not only did this cut down on noise but as they are mirrored plastic they make it look like a 1970's toaster.:)
It almost seemed to me that he was claiming credit for cloning the BIOS! Of course thats utter nonsense. He wrote DOS for the IBM and then others decided they didn't want to pay so much for IBM compatable hardware and reverse engineered the BIOS. Poof, the PC clones were born and had nothing to do with MS, other then the cloners wanted something cheap to run DOS on.
I suppose the best thing to do would be as many as possible out of those options. Search the net, mail resumes, look up in the paper, and let headhunters know you're available. Be a bit careful of them, though. I used one to get my current job and they tend to ignore me for months at a time, plus they can't write performance reviews or letters of recomendation after the contract expires. They never see you work, after all.
Also, make sure you follow up on resumes you've sent. Just because you send them one doesn't mean they'll look at it. Often this can be as easy as an email to the HR staff. In addition, I've found that a lot of times when dealing with online listings its better to send the resume and then call the contact right away (or even before) to get more details on the job, if they're still hiring, and mayeb even to send them a nice printed copy of your resume. Don't be a pest, but don't let them forget about you either.
All in all, if you need work, look everywhere. Chances are you don't have much else to do anyway. That, and follow up on everything you send and you should find your way to employment soon.
