MTV Games Launches

Huh? Cable channels are still based around topics.
MTV = Teen junk channel VH1 = Celebrity clip show channel Discovery = Motorcycle channel TLC = Home Improvement Channel G4 = Crap channel TBS = Sitcom channel TNT = "The same movie 5 times in a row" channel SpikeTV = The "where syndicated shows go to die" channel
Uh apparently you weren't looking at the screenshots carefully enough.
The window title bars are transparent! Hello! This is groundbreaking! "Glass" will change the way people use computers, its not simply eyecandy. Now you don't have to move your window to see if there is anything behind your titlebar... truly revolutionary!/sarcasm
Alas, despite the wait, Tiger is a minor revision, like all previous OS X updates.
I have some quips with this statement (its a favorite of Thurott's too.) Windows 2000 to XP was a minor revision (5.0 to 5.1 I believe.) So was, arguably, Windows 95 to 98. And 98SE to ME.
Also, since it seems Microsoft is releasing most of the cool Longhorn features to Windows XP... XP to Longhorn may very well be a "minor revision" as well.
A widget is special because it can be called up by hitting the Dashboard key and then gotten rid of quickly.
The code behind a widget is nothing new/special... its HTML. You can mix in Javascript and Cocoa as well (I guess you just embed them into the HTML? I'm not sure)
Channel 1: The Homestar Channel. Channel 2: The Weebl and Bob channel. Channel 3 will be dedicated to various Star Wars Kid videos. Don't forget you have a couple thousand channels of porn...
Learn the ways of the enterprise and cast aside ur evil VB6... burn VB burn...
Are you from Microsoft's marketing department?
The same Marketing department that told us to scrap our 200,000+ VB6 application (hey, it was that way when I got there don't blame me) and rewrite it in VB.NET?
The same Marketing department that told us Oracle was ol' school so we should rewrite 2.5 million lines of PL/SQL in SQL Server?
If you want to do this for us for free, go right ahead. "Enterprises" don't run like MS's marketing department would have you believe.
Personally I think they should have called it anything but XBox 360. I mean, what the hell is 360 suppose to mean? Full circle? Does that mean it only plays text games?
I really feel that MS got some things very very right with Visual Studio.Net and it is way different developing.Net apps with the IDE in Visual Studio.
No offense, but MS got some things very very right with Visual Studio 6. VS.NET was very very wrong.
People can say what they want about VB6, but being able to edit your code while debugging saves a lot of headache. There have been times in VS.NET where I've had to rebuild an entire project because a file is out of sync and its telling me I have a bug on a blank line.
Visual Basic has its place in the world, just like all other languages. That said, VB.NET is NOT Visual Basic.
Sorry for the OT rant. I just feel VS.NET is too buggy. I liked Visual Studio 6 fine. Eclipse is great, needs a speed improvement. XCode ticks me off but I like what I see in 2.0. Text Wrangler still reigns supreme.:)
The weather and flight tracking applets don't ship with Panther. They have them standalone in Tiger? I didn't see that on Apple's website.
Apple has included an application called Safari that connects to this thing called the internet where you can visit pages such as weather.com or your local airline to get these things. Sorry to respond like a dick, but these are things that you look at and then get rid of not leave on your screen. And if you did, use the internet. Its not like either are hard to get to.
Yes, right now I don't know of any Dashboard widgets for which there is no third-party alternative... but just wait. Dashboard is going to be like Hypercard. People will do all kinds of things in Dashboard just because scripting is so easy. That cool potential makes the ghettoization of the widgets so unfortunate.
Right... BUT... Dashboard is made for (I'll say it for like the 3rd time) widgets that you need to look at and get rid of. People coding for Dashboard should know this. If you need to code something else, you use a different tool. Its not like Dashboard widgets use some new language... they're HTML, Javascript, and Cocoa.
1. Huh? There aren't desktop counterparts for all Dashboard widgets? Name one.
2. Like what? Its not like Dashboard was made to house IDEs or even text editors. Most Dashboard widgets are just small bits of HTML that point to a website. Do you really need to stare at the weather widget and watch the weather change?
If you didn't want to get rid of them, thats when you use their counter parts (such as Calculator.app). Its not like these functions don't live outside of Dashboard.
The purpose of Dashboard is to have little widgets (ie Konfabulator) that are quick to look at and get rid of. And thats what Dashboard does. Don't quite see the problem there.
That would completely destroy the purpose of Dashboard. All the things you can do in DB you can already do outside of it... so that would be a pointless task.
Then again, so is porting Linux to an Atari which I'm sure has either been done or is in progress...
I hate to tell you but 'Z' is not all THAT long. The boxes are usually designed and probably printed while the actual development goes on. You know thats what production houses are for, right? You don't see a company go "Hey! We just hit Gold Master! THE GAME COMES OUT IN ONLY 1 YEAR!!!" do you?
I wasn't taking his 6 years comment literally, I just think it was a stupid comment.
I thought they were suppose to give us a teaser for Mario 128. I'm starting to wonder if that game actually exists.
Oh oh!
Tbe Weather Channel = The Commercial Channel (with "weather forecast" interruptions)
Huh? Cable channels are still based around topics.
MTV = Teen junk channel
VH1 = Celebrity clip show channel
Discovery = Motorcycle channel
TLC = Home Improvement Channel
G4 = Crap channel
TBS = Sitcom channel
TNT = "The same movie 5 times in a row" channel
SpikeTV = The "where syndicated shows go to die" channel
Sure they all need a bit of renaming...
Uh apparently you weren't looking at the screenshots carefully enough.

I respect for him just rose a millimeter. Huh.

Try going to Google and typing movie:##### (where ##### is your zipcode)
:)
Thats how I search for movie showtimes now
So this one won't break your back when you try to lift it?
Here's hoping they make the controllers for average sized hands, not basketball player hands.

Why no mention of the other Dashboard sites that have sprung up recently
;)
Why, because they haven't submitted their stories to Slashdot.
Is The Rock's dialogue all going to be just his grunting whenever he gets hit?
Channel 1: The Homestar Channel. Channel 2: The Weebl and Bob channel. Channel 3 will be dedicated to various Star Wars Kid videos. Don't forget you have a couple thousand channels of porn...
I imagine people will call the new XBox "The New XBox" :)

Playstation 2 has 4 syllables.

Backdoor?? ITS HTML! Go into the .wdgt file, pull out the html file and all its parts and there you go!

IE does RSS and inline PDF (without Adobe Reader)??? Really??

I think they are just saying, "Hey, we're rich. We don't really need this money so screw it."
I think they get plenty of money in their stock options anyway.
