  1. Re:This would be great. on Turn Your New Opteron Into A One-Game Console · · Score: 1

There are several advantages. To start off, the game would be given all of the resources of the machine, and not have to share them with daemons and other apps that you might be running.

It would also make the development more efficient, because the game would only have to be written to work with a predetermined kernel and driver base, not any Linux distro w/ any hardware and apps.

It would also open up the game to work on ANY x86 machine without the need to pay a Windows(tm) tax. Whether you have Windows or not would not be a determination to purchase the game. This would potentially open up the gaming market to those of us who prefer not to use Windows without alienating those people who prefer it (IMHO one of the main reasons that more development dollars are not spent porting games to Linux).

In these types of cases I agree with you, but I was referring to the DMCA in general. It is bad law, and the RIAA/MPAA are major contributors to its adoption. According to the DMCA party A can rifle through party B's property.

  3. Re:Collateral Damage? on RIAA Sues the Wrong Person · · Score: 1

The problem with their tactics isn't that they are doing something that isn't within their rights, or even something that they shouldn't be doing. They have every right to go after file traders and should.

The problem is that our government, which is supposed to protect the innocent, has given away all oversight into the charges that one party has directed toward another. If party A says that party B is infringing, it us up to party B to prove that they are not, potentially paying exorbitant amounts of money to do so, settling the suits for tons of cash, or risking the possible outcome of being found liable for $150,000 * number of alleged songs shared. Party A is free to rifle through party B's personal property in order to find guilt, and party B is left with no defense.

The RIAA has been screwing musicians and customers for a very long time, and has made a LOT of money in the process. The fact that they have used that money to get the DMCA passed and removed my rights as an American is infuriating. It is especially irksome considering to the fact that my rights were taken away, not to better society as a whole, but rather to make a few billionaires a little more money.

My rights were taken away. That is a fact. There can never be words that are too harsh directed at those responsible for this.

I hate to say this, because I try to be an understanding person, but the people at damage seem to be a bunch of morons that don't understand the first thing about responsiblity. The workers at SCO are not in any position to make a moral statement to their bosses if they cannot find new employment. Quitting their jobs without having new ones lined up will ensure that they will be unemployed for a LONG time. It is always easier to find a job if you are currently employed than if you aren't.

If the people at damage truely wanted to help, they would say, "Anyone with a resume containg SCO IT since May 2003 will be hired on the spot." Give the people at SCO a place to go, and then see if they will leave.

Of course, if Damage did in fact make this offer back in May, then I hope they will accept my apologies.

I have to disagree with your assumption that it takes real skill and understanding to do anything analog. I was taking apart my electronic toys and making various sounds with them by placing bent up paperclips on various parts of the curcuitry when I was 12. There was nothing digital about the sound, and there is nothing special about me (i.e. I wasn't some kid genious EE type). I just accidently found that by shorting out certain circuits on a toy calculator designed to teach me math that I could make screaching noises, and the frequency would go up and down based on how tight I held the clips. This annoyed the hel! out of my brother, so I kept doing it. Now granted, I never took the time to solder a rheostat on any of the places I put the clips, but I very well could have (yes, even when I was 12). I just never thought it was cool enough to make any of it permanent. And I still don't.

Virginia's Motor Vehicle Warranty Enforcement Act, the "Lemon Law", gives you specific rights if you are the owner of a relatively new vehicle with recurrent or significant defects or your vehicle has been in the shop for a total of 30 days or more.

If you qualify, you may recover expenses such as:
    • Refund of your purchase price
    • Interest on your car loan
    • Loss of Use expenses
    • Attorney's fees
    • Other incidental damages
I don't see why the same type of arrangement can't be made with computer equipment. After all, a computer is just as essential for me to do my job as my car is to get me to work.
