Yeah! Like 20 years ago when IBM licensed their BIOS.... wait a minute... IBM didn't license shit! The only thing they had to license was a BIOS (which they didn't) and MS/DOS (which they did, but so did Microsoft who retained their licensing rights and sold millions of copies to the clone makers).
And, BTW, Apple's number will show you they are not the dominate vendor of portables, they are dominant 'in their price range of their niche' (their niche being high-end hard drive players), but there are many other players out there who have big number market segment in their price range.
Sorry... but you're wrong on all counts. So... this ad goes back to being just a cool piece of marketing, not some portent of doom.
If you want to be able to use the most hardware and run the most apps then use Windows. No argument there. It's an easily noted fact.
All I am trying to say is that Apple, in general, has fewer devices and programs that can run on it. And this would be a fair statement except that your argument included so much more.
Apple designs all their products, so making sure they are fully supported and work well is easy.
It seems like nearly all the hardware you can use on an Apple is sold by Apple themselves.
If it 'seems' this way, then your powers of observation have not been given enough data.
Cameras (and mine doesn't require a driver on my Mac like it does on Win XP), keyboards & mice (even that wily Microsoft brand!), hard drives, palmtops, PDAs, CD burners, DVD burners (Apple doesn't even make external optical drives), printers, scanners, MP3 players (heaps of em!), speakers, wireless kit, even cables and adapters. There are thousands of hardware products for Apple machines. In fact, it's quite obvious that there are many more of them made elsewhere than Apple makes, so 'nearly all the hardware you can use on an Apple is made by someone other than Apple themselves' is probably a truer statement. As evidence, I offer the Apple online store and vendors like MacMall.
Finally, the proper working of all these peripherals on the Mac platform is just as important (and hard) as it is to make sure of the same on the Windows platform. But some would still argue that it's 'easier' on MacOS, but because Apple has made it so (by sticking to and embracing standards).
Don't discount out of hand what is so easily confirmed with a couple of clicks of your mouse... a mouse that probably works just fine on my Mac, I might add.
Thanks. But I have never "trolled". It was a 'joke' which is why there is a moderation designation "funny" (along with one for "troll" for actual trolls). Please go have a look at the jargon dictionary for the proper definition. I'll forgive you this time, but don't let it happen again. *shakes finger at you*
So the previous story is: Developers: Savannah Back Online With Extra Security depesz writes "As we can read here, savannah is back online. After several weeks of downtime, all security problems are resolved, and the service is again operational."
Cool. So can you post a notice when the server in this story is back up, too?
So no stories on lame-ass mods with neon tubes and perspex and decals and bondo from now on? If they don't approach this level of care, design and planning, then I don't wanna see em.
I bet if ABC had run the same episode of 'Doogie Howser, M.D.' two or three times thereby causing Taco's Tivo to pick up two or three dupes HE wouldn't just "get over it".
Seriously, you guys, no matter how much you want to pretend it is, for whatever reason, this _isn't_ still your little hobby site any more.
I once had the distinct *cough* privilege *cough* of having no less that 4 people over the "management" my work. Basically, a manager would whine long and loud enough about how overworked he was until they'd get the go ahead to turn someone below them into a mini-manager who would take up the management of their people. Then that manager, conceivably, suddenly has only one person to manage.
Needless to say we were all a little unclear as to what the first manager now did besides check that the mini-manager was doing his job and maybe make some pretty Powerpoint presentation to show what a great manager he now was.
Amen! Instead of letting them push you into implementing THEIR policy (which the poster has done 'to a point'), how about giving them incentive to do it right. Like "do that again and you're fired". That works really well.
Are we increasing security too much, so that the users circumvent it? Should we be allowing simple passwords?
If you've 'increased security' then you are not allowing simple passwords! If your users have convinced you that strong passwords are that hard for them, then you have been duped by the legions of laziness, my friend. Any security-minded admin knows that their users are their biggest potential liability. Hasn't 20 or 30 years of witnessing the effects of trivial passwords and social engineering taught us this?
Coddling users to the point that you allow them to become a liability and a target is the equivalent of leaving a key under the door mat. If you and your company can't/won't create a policy that demands individual responsibility, you might as well quit kidding yourself that you truly desire security. And get out, because you're just setting yourself up to be the fall guy when the company wants answers why there was a compromise. They're not gonna say "oh, yes, because we forced you to water down security", they're gonna blame you and hire someone else to be their strawman.
Wow! What a complete and utter clusterfark!

Wow! That really is the ugliest thing I've ever seen! Thanks, Slashdot, for bringing this piece of crap to our attention. Now hundreds of 1337 g4m0rz who have modded their PCs with... well the same tubes and LEDs and plexy crap, really... can feel better about their 'Tandy 30-in-One' lookalike craptastic boxes! They have truly acheived 1960s electronic chic.
Now, if we could find something to make all those airfoiled, spoilered, prismatic, fiberglass Civic, Prelude and Supra mods look like more than some 6 year old's first attempt at a Revell Mustang kit. They need love too.
The machine you see in the movie is a prop. The LCD screen is showing the output from an off-screen SGI desktop. As SGI built portable LCD displays at the time, this was a simple humbug for the physical effects people to pull off. A company (rsi-cri.com) once made some ruggedized SGI 'laptops', but they were a whole 'nother animal. They still make some awesome ruggedized SGI rack-mounts, though.
And now, a plug for Jodeman's SGI & Stuff site(s) http://www.bbsolutions.com/jodeman/

Will everyone quit wasting their moderation points on this??? I just got an email with 27 moderation results!
Please. Stop the madness!!!
Eww! Horrors! How could one live with such a thing.
*rolls eyes*
Man, all this over one flippant joke....
Oh. Poor thing. If moderation is so bad, then why are you so worried about messing up your karma?
:)
Coward.
Awww... I'm sorry, ya big lug. C'mere. I'll buy ya a beer.

John Goodman's ass has been emitting gravity waves for years.
Uhhhh... but it uses less energy and has lower emissions. How is this bad?
