    So what? the nearest star that can explode as a supernova? What good will knowing that mean if it's millions of years away?

    The RIGHT question is:

      What's the closest star we can SEE with the naked EYE go supernova that has a reasonable chance of any of us slashdotters viewing in our lifetimes. That IS important as it matters to the average person who might just look up.

    Not sure why these things are called "Web App" when it's really an "IE APP".

    Hopefully (probably not) this will leave a bad enough taste in people's mouths NOT to create applications that only run on one vendor's browser and even worse one vendor's browser at a specific version.

    Seems like the people dumping on Google Plus are the same people who hate Facebook. That is, they didn't use google plus much before and didn't want to like the site before they ever typed in the URL.

    So...there is absolutely NO surprise that people who hate social media websites hate google plus. Big deal. Move on.

    I actually disagree. Direct democracy results in mob rule. Athens failed for that reason. (among others). A majority has no problem voting a minority into ovens. It's happened.

    power should be distributed as widely and as feasibly possible.

    Another point is that the "corporation" is a creation of government. The entity is defined by law which in turn is made by government.

    In the series the screwdriver can do just about anything as long as it's not wood that it's working on (or some biological stuff). The good Doctor uses it to do just about everything. I seriously doubt we have the ability to create a magical device that can by pointing at a computer made by an alien species do what we want.

    That's practically speaking redundant. "borderline illegal? Something is legal or not (as determined by court). The term implies immoral already.

    Why don't you say "The tax law is immoral" because that is what you are ACTUALLY saying. Of course it's easier to dump on people doing what their elected officials purposely design the tax law to allow them to do then the actual elected officials.

    The question then becomes, what is "avoiding".

    Is avoiding using legal tax holes created by our elected officials? Or are you just saying you don't like the way the current tax law? Or both.

    To me "avoidance" would be not paying what you legally have to, instead of using what is legally available. You CAN argue that the current tax system allows for what you believe to be immoral and unfair if you want. Terms like "unfair" and "immoral", at least using the definition many people use which even if you use the dictionary is stretchable depending on who you talk to, is a difficult term to use in an argument that's convincing.

    If they are doing stuff to stick their middle finger up at the world and feel great I'd do an above the ground test. It's FAR more impressive.

    yes..radiation, destruction, etc are are a problem. But just sayin if you are going for something to be impressive the above ground test is better than watching a massive sinkhole get made in a moments notice.

    Standards based, and free to use or if an enterprise wants to deploy it they can buy their own authentication infrastructure. The ability to call a traditional SIP or h.323 based VTC unit directly without some goofy transcoding high cost solution like blujeans.com is gold.

    I dispute that. It did not take long for PC's with video cards to jump ahead of consoles. The lifecycles on consoles are SO long that even some mobile devices are more powerful.

    There is an easy way to get people to move. When somebody asks and wants to see your photos, streams, etc and they ask you to stick it on facebook you simply say "sorry, I don't use facebook. I use Google Plus".

    If they want to see your stuff then they will make the effort to see it.

    This is how I got my family to use (or at least try) google plus. Sure, they use facebook. I don't.

    If on the other hand it's IMPORTANT to GET people to see stuff they did not ask you to see then you have to go the other way.
