Why is it that the phone companies are always trying to get a profit in a way that I'd imagine a Ferrengi would? It always seems business ethics is something that they laugh about in their corporate meetings.
From disabling features on phones and charging for it later to metered bandwidth charges.
One more argument for EVERYBODY the world over to move to UTC.
Yes, you'd have to figure out when you eat and go to sleep and it would be different depending on where you were in the world. Once you figured it out it would not be that bad.
People would bitch and moan, but they would get over it.
Instead we play goofy games with clocks to "fool" people.
In a world with UDT if a biz wants to stay open longer. Guess what? They would SHIFT THEIR HOURS!
I can't count the number of times I've had to kill -9 firefox on my PowerPC based Mac Laptop. It would be nice if they could FIX the bugs that crash/freeze Firefox BEFORE moving on to the next release.
Although not for short haul flights, a nuclear powered airplane for long flights would be useful. The U.S. Air force and the Russian Air Force both experimented and had plans for nuclear powered bombers as way back as the 50's.
The new AirBus A380 and similar craft (maybe even the old 747) could easily have a small nuclear reactor onboard.
Of course I'm talking purely technical. The politics of flying nuclear powered aircraft over populated areas I'm sure would be quite talk around the water cooler.
Ok...What if I had a nuclear submarine and hit the same spot above the caldera with a barrage of nukes. I'm looking to "set off" the caldera (if I was evil).
You don't need to be 100% effective to stop 90% of piracy, and that is what the license stuff does. Everybody knows that you can get around Fairplay by ripping your CD's after burning them in itunes.
It's the same with most security measures. Take a wall across the southern border. Sure, you will have people who tunnel through or ladder over, but not the crazy amount that's crossing now. The point is to make the border MANAGEABLE.
Security is not a 100% secure or not all game as some would have you believe.
I'm building a dedicated home theater in my basement. When it's done I'd like to be able to play a videogame (shooter or driving game) in the dedicated room. VGA cables lose signal strength over distances and cause ghosting.
I'm certain that hard drives will slowly go away to be replaced with Flash ram devices. As the price drops it will happen.
Reasons?
1. Hard Drive reliability - See the security now podcast or read google's paper about hard drive reliability. The manufacturers are lying BIG time about how bad it's gotten. And SMART is a steaming pile of nothingness that can and is wildly inaccurate.
2. Latency (not speed) is so much better than hard drives.
3. Power and heat - Flash memory does not generate near as much heat or draw as much power. Plus we can expect densities to get higher so the footprint probably will be smaller than hard drives
We've already seen it in handhelds. It's moving to laptops (Toshiba and Fujitsu already are selling laptops)
If it has a mechanical action to it, it can fail horribly.
If I had the money I'd buy the name and give it to Jack Tramiel as a gift.
The name has no more value to just about anybody as far as profit is concerned. Maybe somebody could put together a (Buy Commodore) campaign. The goal being to get the trademark and the name and put it to rest. Once and for all.
Normal folks (not us) don't monitor their bandwidth by the number. To them speed is a subjective experience dependent on the application they are using.
If all they are doing is web surfing, and web surfing fairly low-bandwidth pages then in their eyes it's just fine.
What will push people to complain is if something like two way video conferencing becomes all the rage, or DVD quality movie streaming. As soon as Mom and Pop starts seeing lag, compression artifacts and slow response time they will complain AND not care who's fault it is. They'll pick up their phone, call their cable company and complain.
And if the local monopoly does not fix it then they will bitch to their local elected rep.
The problem is that high bandwidth apps are still probably a couple of years away.
If the NSA wanted to build a custom quantum computer to break traditional cryptographic systems what are the chances that's it's already been done (and in use)?
Mass producing a commercially viable quantum computer (or many sci-fi like technologies) is usually pretty hard, but producing one or two special purpose built systems are MUCH easier.
I don't know where you get the "High profit Margins" from.
Just last week I compared the price and hardware of a Dell Notebook and an Apple Powerbook. The price was about 50 bucks difference once way or the other depending on which angle you look at it.
Dell definitely does not have HIGH margins. Unless Apple has some special deal with the OEM hardware vendors it's hard to see how their margins could be much higher than Dell's.
Just had an idea...what if there was some way to have wikipedia distributed around the net. I'm thinking of something along the lines where volunteer web operators could host an entry or two.
I'm sure there are all sorts of issues but if we had a distributed wikipedia it would be less likely to vanish in a big puff of smoke if the money runs out.
I wish I knew whether the "Che" image in the article is expressing a positive or a negative aspect. Ernesto "Che" Guevara was responsible for the execution of many people.
So Mr. Author of the article. Are you saying Che would of resisted control of the internet? or Embraced the Cuban style lockdown that exists now (IN Cuba).
What exactly does the image mean in the context of the article?
To crack a movie. Once it's been cracked and posted on Bittorrent fixing the key in the DVD player that was the culpret might keep the same hack from being used again, but it's toast for that movie.
All the twisty wisty arguments below by people about what the Constitution means or does not mean is a PERFECT example of why using English for writing LAW is just plain stupid.
The Ambiguity in english allows 3 different people to interpret the same clause 8 different ways and ALL OF THEM ARE RIGHT depending on the time of day...
Although not perfect if the constitution were written in Latin things would be easier.
I have the feeling though that if the founding fathers were brought forward in a time machine, given a summary of history of the planet since they kicked the bucket and then took a look at the "liberty" that congress/prez/Supreme Court has taken with the constitution they would be horrified.

The Grand Nagus would be proud.

Ok Fan boy. I liked Serenity. It was a good film and worth the $8.50 plus whatever I payed for the DVD.
Best Sci-Fi film of ALL time? That's a bit of a stretch.
What about..and these are only the ones I can pull out of my ass at a moments notice....
Blade Runner
2001 A space Oddessy
Forbidden Planet
The Day the Earth Stood still
The Thing
Alien/Alien 2
Need I go on?
Your reality does not match my reality. Therefore you must be from another dimension.

The EU sees they can get a payoff from Microsoft, you can bet they will push it until MS says uncle...then there will be some settlement.

It's all good...I got me my NASCAR ear protectors to save my ass....and beer to help
If you had a Nuke and you either 1) detonated it above ground or 2) dug hole and buried it.
Would it/Could it cause the caldera to explode?

Yes. I hear that the contracting company who will build it also built the tsunami wave generator now operating in the Indian Ocean.

Well come on! I was trying to be brief and poetic :)
San Diego Super Computing Center (SDSC) has 2 Petabytes of online Storage with 400TB for researchers. They have 18PB of archival tape storage.

Still....I like datacenters. The hum of equipment. 65 degree temps and lower. I once had my cube re-located to a tape library. Quiet...peaceful place
