They ARE looking at upgrading the design for the J2S engines from the Saturn 4/5 in one of the designs, so I would say it IS a remix of technology from the past.
They did'nt say if they would strip a J2 engine from somewhere or completely re-create it. I'd imagine they would take one from an existing Saturn V since re-tooling to create a J2 engine would probably be expensive.
An Aerospace engineer once pointed out to me that a good portion of the shuttle's weight is in componants designed for only a small percentage of the mission.....re-entry. With the cost of lifting each pound in the thousands of dollars NASA has to lift the weight of the wings, wheels and everything involved with gliding back to earth.
In hindsight it's obvious how non-economical (in addition to high maintanance costs and safty issues with side mounted to a rocket) the shuttle really is.
Fact of the matter is...a capsule type ship is cheaper and safter
The idea of time as something that people can agree upon works so that people can agree when to meet...ect...
The current system was designed when people did'nt leave their locality. With people traveling multiple time zones and communicating over multiple time zones having a universal time that everybody all over the planet can agree upon only makes sense.
So how does the Chinese government keep "radicals" or enemys of the state from meeting in these online games? It's not like lurking in a chat room.
Could we see pro-democracy people in China meeting in some strange dungeon or cave in the game to talk about things the Chinese gov does not want them to?
Every upgrade around the world for broadband helps EVERYBODY who uses Bittorrent (due to increased upload speeds)...so....I root (no pun) for ANY upgrade for everybody:)
Does'nt power over ethernet require a pair from the 8 wires in order to work? If so..that would conflict with Gigabit over Ethernet which uses all 8 wires in a cat5/6 cable.
Lets say you are a biz and you are looking at alternative desktops to Windows. The alternatives are....OX X or the plethora of LINUX distros. It's unlikely you'll choose one without paid support, so the price per seat for licensing a supported version of LINUX is not going to be free.
So...looking at what you get if you are PAYING..which you will be if you want support, OS X is SO much farther ahead than ANY linux distro on the desktop it makes NO sense to choose LINUX over OS X.
Now..if you are NOT paying for support and are willing to have a team of LINUX admins support the desktop users then LINUX desktop might trump OS X...or might not depending on how good your admins are.
I've been LINUX users since 1994 and frankly after starting to use OS X 6 months ago for every day tasks, firing up KDE or Gnome just disappoints me.
After being disappointed when Babylon-5 and Farscape went away I remember wondering if there was EVER going to be another Sci-fi series like those two.
The BEST scifi (and fantasy) explores the human condition in situations that cannot or do not exist today. In this way an author is able to explore aspects of emotion and dichotomy by creating situations which bring seemingly unrelated ideas into conflict. Even in sci-fi with Aliens there will always be a "human" anthromorphic undertone or the Alien will have characteristics of Terran life (mental or physical since currently humans have no real evidence of what a REAL alien would look or think like). Ron Moore Understands this.
If you take out exploring the human condition...then you get a show with lots of cool equipment and places but is easily forgettable.
This is why I think sci-fi/fantasy is a VERY interesting genre. They are limited only by imagination...but are ALWAYS about humans (US) because they come from human imagination.
On a different track....I'm particularly impressed with SG Atlantis. Usually it takes a season or two for me to become "comfortable" with the characters (case in point...Voyager took 3 seasons)..but after just one season the characters on Atlantis have "jelled" and are interesting. This is a GOOD thing! I'm conflicted about them contacting earth so soon though it might have been more interesting if they had kept them back for a couple of seasons.
Its to be seen if the addition of the stars from Farscape will breath new life into Stargate SG-1...but I'm hopeful since both actors have shown they know their craft from Farscape. Remember that Law and Order has shown that a show can go on indefinitely if you rotate actors in over time that are good. I would not be surprised if SG-1 tries for this (or Atlantis).
I'll take the monster I know (current organization) vs the one I DON'T know (the UN).
I see only negatives to giving it to the UN. Sure, it would be great if the UN was a relatively honest organization that you could be relatively sure would'nt be bribed. Unfortunately I don't think that's the case.
Now you could make the argument that the CURRENT owners are just as bad, but I seriously doubt the UN is better. All risk...and relatively NO reward.
yea.....I also remember them providing a multicast feed of NASA TV to the Education/Research community. That feed mysteriously dissapeared years ago. Now the only way to watch it in high quality (NOT WEBSTREAMING) and multicasted is via the University of Oregon...why NASA does not do this themselves is beyond me, it's not like they could'nt throw up a multicast feed in Mpeg-1 in say 20 min.
I've read all the excuses about why valve acts the way it does about the state of their games. Frankly its a load of crap.
Other companies have had their development of games WIDE open practically like Never Winter Nights and the fans appreciated it MUCH more.
Everytime Valve talks it smells like a snow job with lies. Take the current development of Day of Defeat. They SOLD that game to people as part of the Half-Life 2 package implying that it would be out "soon" almost a year ago and it still is'nt out. I don't mind waiting, in fact if they would of said something like "we really have'nt put many resources into it because we've been working on half-life 2. Don't look for it anytime within the 6-10 months" I would of said "OK", respected them a bit more and patiently waited. Only recently did they talk about it once the Public Beta came out.
Now it's just a game and I don't get real worked up over these things (sounds like it though). But this arrogant attitude they have sucks.
It will eventually. At some point I expect software engineering (and becomming a programmer) of systems that are critical (like bridge engineering and building construction) to be a type of job that requires some sort of a certification like an architech or civil engineer. Of course that will not mean you can't program, just if you want to sell something without being liable you'll probably have to be licensed.
Of course this will not happen anytime soon. But it probably will eventually.
When it does...software innovation will slow, but overall quality of end product will probably increase dramatically.
I remember a name....Mehdi Ali CEO of Commodore...a name that Commodore Amiga fans will curse from now until eternity. Strangely SGI seems similar. CEO's that seemingly purposely led their companies into ruin and then jumped out of the plane with a golden parachute.

Agreed....
If you are going to continue to demand a premium product then you'd better have a product that is premium to everybody else in quality. SGI paid no attention to the fact that other companies were innovating faster than they were and undercutting them...so they're almost dead
If more end users cared about there systems there would of been more accountability on the part of OS and application vendors.
It's been the one the greatest snow jobs ever. The ability of the OS and application vendors to put the onus on networks (and network admins) to protect their products from bad engineering.
Many people seem to be missing the point. IF your security configuration (IE firewall) is keeping you from doing your biz then you've failed. Security in and of itself adds NO VALUE. It does not make your workers more productive, it does not add profit it does not make your network faster.
So when evaluating when/if to deploy a firewall you need to ask yourself if implementing the firewall is going to restrict your ability to do what you need to do. If so is it an acceptable reduction? If not then maybe the firewall is'nt such a hot idea.

Wow...reading that was like going to the movies! If you had a paypal account I'd almost consider sending $7.50 for the satisfying read!

Hey Taco...
How bouty changing the title from "To the moon" to "around the moon".....since that is what the Russians are actually doing instead of landing ON it.
Funny how my score went down on my post...

It would be SO much easier if EVERYBODY was on UTC. The "inconvienience" of figuring out when you should go to bed is worth the sacrafice.

It's sad to see Jimmy go....
And on another point...
It's TREKKER! NOT trekkie
Trekkie = passe 70's term referring to Star Trek fan with no life
Trekker = enligtened 90's/21st Century Star Trek fan that has a life other than Star Trek

Yup...you are exactly right. Ron Moore was the best thing to happen to Trek...and the worst thing when he left.
After being disappointed when Babylon-5 and Farscape went away I remember wondering if there was EVER going to be another Sci-fi series like those two.

Seriously....the lack of quality that Slashdot has degraded to is getting out of control.
After this article...maybe I'll try just ignoring Slashdot or a week or so...read Ars Technica and Tomshardware.
In the beginning Slashdot was pretty cool...Now it's not so cool
And WHY does this deserve to grace the front page of slashdot? In the gaming section sure...but the front page? Slow news day?

Just because you RUN a firewall does not mean it needs to be doing anything. Just turn it on and allow anything to access anything.
Next time the checkbox comes up on the compliance form and you see the box that says "are you running a firewall" you check the box and move on.
