  1. Re:side-by-side on First Looks At Windows 8.1, Complete With 'Start' Button · · Score: 0

I think that a large section of the market didn't really need a computer but nobody would know that until it played out in real time and somebody saw a way to get the major functionality into a tablet. Now a lot of people can do the kind of things they want at a much lower cost-and they can probably go blind more rapidly as the screen size issue is real. Nevertheless, some people still need a computer and they have never been seriously identified before. Now is the time to fix that and give us an operating system with maximum PC style user requirements addressed directly. It would be nice if we could get a serious effort instead of a mass production effort. That is why I liked the mainframe computing vendors-they focused on business. We need that kind of focus and now is the time. Windows wastes huge amounts of resources, come to think of it I recall VMS doing the same thing. I wrote a lock function that was 100 times faster than the VMS version. It almost seems as if the operating system designers think time is irrelevant and resources are infinite-time to start looking at efficiency. Time for a review of strategy.

This summarizes Microsoft to a T. Do as we say not what you want. There are a lot of things Microsoft don't get..making a halfway decent version of windows (XP) followed by dogshit Vista which acted like the security services at an airport but was on your computer-ran zillions of tasks and was basically crap in terms of the sound. This was followed by their patched version renamed windows 7 with no hardware acceleration for windows themselves and a task bar that appeared to be a floating version of icons misplaced at the bottom. The special sound effects were summarily executed by refusing to support directsound-rendering the special efforts of game developers and audio engineers null and void. This was fixed to a degree by developers coming up with enabling software-but never fully recaptured what an XP machine could do. To follow AND FINISH we have windows 8-an operating system designed for children by children. This supposed operating system was Microsoft's misperception that a PC is a giant phone. Only consumers of lightweight proportions qualify for this piece of crap masquerading as an operating system with it's "charm" bar. Certainly a stripped version that cuts out windows overheads is welcome but as a developer of real world slot games I would like to be able to switch the operating system to "game" mode and forget windows largely. Consoles used to have special cartridges-but now the game is commonly presented on dvd so-you are on your own. If it's digital it's hackable, crackable and endlessly reproducible-or didn't you see that coming oh mighty ones? Too late now. One last thing- There is no one last thing
