  1. Libretto on Ask Slashdot: Handheld Linux, Today? · · Score: 2
I've been running Linux on a Libretto 50CT, since they were first released in the UK (nearly 2 years ago). I've been extremely happy with it so far. The only real problem has been the size of the hard drive (the 50CT only came with 810MB). However, I've since found a supplier of larger drives (up to 4GB), and the newer models all come with bigger drives anyway. I haven't found battery life to be a problem (I get about 2.5 - 3 hours from the standard battery, and a friend with the larger battery reports nearly 5 hours).

The 50CT will do 640x480, and some of the newer models (100CT and 110CT) will do 800x480. Both can do 1024x768 (or higher?) on an external monitor.

  2. I wish CDs cost $18 on MP3s Causing Decline in CD Sales? · · Score: 1
It's incredibly common to see those stores asking $18 for a CD!

In the UK, the average price of a CD is equivalent to about US$24 at current conversion rates, with "premier" artists charging even more than that. Sure, I can order them over the net at sensible prices from CD Universe or CD Now, but if I do so, I also have to pay

    • postage and packing
    • 3.5% import duty to HM Customs and Excise
    • 17.5% VAT (value added tax) on the purchase price
all of which tends to defeat the original purpose. You guys don't know how lucky you are to only be paying $18 per CD...
  3. Netware 5 as an apps server on Novell Opens Source · · Score: 1

Trust me, that really isn't difficult...

There is no need to port apachee to .nlm, FastTrack comes with the base install.

So FastTrack comes with a PHP module? And what about the next great server side extension? Unless you're using an Open Source webserver, you're going to have to wait for your chosen vendor to support your choice of goodies (which they may just refuse to do). I'm not knocking Novell or FastTrack, but in some cases, having access to the source is all but essential.

9x and NT file shares suck.

Agreed, and that's one area in which Novell excels -- fileserving to gazillions of users.

  4. If banner ads are too slow, turn them off! on "New Copyleft License" released · · Score: 1
I am getting really bad download times here in the UK, not because /. is slow but purely because the server for the adverts is holding the rest of the page up

  5. *Still* no DDD on Red Hat Releases Starbuck · · Score: 1
Apart from the obvious goodies, I'm pleased to see the far superior GNU enscript replacing RedHat's traditional nenscript, and also fvwm-2.2. For those of you that abondoned fvwm for newer alternatives like AfterStep, Window Maker, BlackBox etc., I'd strongly recommend taking another look now 2.2 is out. Having tried all the alternatives (with the notable exception of Enlightenment), I'll be sticking with fvwm.

However, the real problem is RedHat's continued neglect of DDD. Now it works with lesstif, there's simply no excuse not to include it. Yes, I know it's available on the powertools CD, but when every other conceivable development tool is shipped on the main CD, omitting a decent graphical debugger is criminal.

January gets to be -40 (F or C, doesn't matter) and I don't think there's a piece of hardware alive for under $1M that could survive that.

It's rated to -20 degrees C (non-operating), and (I think) -5 operating. Colder than that and they recommend taking it inside. Surely this applies to any other in car audio system, too, though?

  7. Be prepared to stand in line a looooong time on Studios Prepare for Star Wars · · Score: 1
I am prepared to stand in line a *loooong* time, believe me. In 1977, I queued for 3 hours to get in to see Star Wars. It's the only film I've ever encountered that had a queue going round 3 sides of the block at our local Gaumont cinema. Times have changed since then (including the cinema being knocked down), but I'd still wait just as long.

In fact, a few of us have been considering flying to New York for the weekend to see it there, rather than wait the extra 2 months for a UK release...

vi in a dtterm on Solaris won't let you go past the end of a line to insert, and that's a problem (a strong hint to use dtpad?)

Surely it's more of a hint to learn how to use "A" to append to the end of a line? Using cursor keys to go past the end of the line seems to me counterintuitive. Maybe that's just a hacker mentality, and it's perfectly logical to the general population. Not that I use cursor keys anyway. h, j, k and l work just fine without the need to remove your hands from the main part of the keyboard. Besides, they're the same keys as moria/angband and they're even in the same layout as the cursor keys on a good old speccy.

Now, I may well go ahead and get one...

  11. Sucks like all portal sites on Redhat's New Web Site · · Score: 1

Wow! It sucks just as much as other portal sites. They need to keep in mind that people go to redhat.com to find out about RedHat products and services. Details of the CDs and the training and support services need to be prominently displayed on the front page. If people want news, they'll go to slashdot, freshmeat or elsewhere, not RedHat. I've got no objection to the summaries being there, but they shouldn't be the main focus of the site.

Oh, and the garish colours suck, too. Still, with Gnome 1.0 and kernel 2.2, RedHat 6.0 should be pretty good when it's released.

  12. No, but some solutions are better than others. on GNOME 1.0 Released · · Score: 1

I guess I'll find out when (if) I get round to trying it.

  15. Linux will catch up at the high end on Sun Opening Microprocessor Technology · · Score: 1
In the world of Starfire and Serengeti (supercomputers), Sun is probably telling the truth when they say that Linux does not compete with them (long term).

Surely this should be short term? Yes, at the moment, Solaris scales better than Linux, but for how long? I've personally run Linux an an Ultra Enterprise 4000, and UltraPenguin runs on the E10K ("StarFire"). OK, so Linux only currently scales to 16 CPUs, but given access to appropriate hardware that'll improve. Apart from anything else, it's very rare to have a whole StarFire configured as a single domain anyway. We have 4 here, and the largest single domain has (I think) 22 CPUs.

The point is, yes, Solaris is currently a much better choice at the high end than Linux, but Linux has consistently pushed upwards for the last few years, and it'll catch up with the commercial Unix vendors (including Sun) in a few years time. Yes, Sun and the others will have moved on by then, but my guess is Linux will push into the high end quicker than the high end will advance.

If you'd actually read the article, or bothered to do the slightest bit of research, you'd know the RPM, like everything else Red Hat have ever developed is already GPL. There are no Red Hat proprietary utilities. No, Red Hat is not perfect, but it is very good, and it's all open source. I think the only thing they've ever shipped without source is Netscape.

  20. Use xev and xmodmap on How do you Define Extra Keys for X? · · Score: 1
First, you need to find the X keysyms for the keys. The easiest way to do this is probably to use xev. Move the cursor to the xev window, and press the key you want to know about. You should see a KeyRelease event, with a line like:
    state 0x0, keycode 125 (keysym 0xff6a, Help), same_screen YES,

This says that the key generates the key code 125, which is currently mapped to the Help keysym. You can either try and find out how to assign the Help key to "back" in Netscape (probably by setting something in your X resources file), or you can use xmodmap to map this key to something that Netscape might already use to go back.

It's all a matter of perspective. Demon has long been the UK's biggest ISP, but Compuserve (i.e., now AOL) has more subscribers -- the difference being not all of Compuserve's users use it for internet access. Hence both can claim to be #1, and both will be right depending on how you look at it.

It'll be interesting to see how FreeServe affects the market (they're rapidly approaching the top spot) when Energis stop paying for it. It can't last forever on the income from support calls alone.
