... unless they're still using Netscape 4, which can spit up and die on perfectly valid CSS. At some point you're putting in too much time (and either forking your designs, or restricting them to be compatible that far back) for it to be worth providing for a dwindling segment of the userbase.
Sure, if people are willing to pay me enough money to cover it, I will... but I let them know that that time is better spent doing other things.
I suppose consistency is too much to ask for on a site dominated by group think.
So you're angry at Slashdot because people posting here all feel the same way about things, but you're also angry because people posting here all have completely different opinions on those same topics?
I guess internal consistency is too much to ask from your argument.
Clue: Slashdot is not a gestalt entity. We are all individuals.
Which if my calculations are correct, Aragorn is supposed to be at least in his 50s - going on the basis of the Story of Arwen and Aragorn (in the appendix).
Wasn't his overall lifespan pretty high, though, in true "heroic" fashion? I get 206 going by the dates in "The Complete Guide to Middle Earth". Also by the dates given there, he was 77 when he met Frodo and companions in the Prancing Pony.
I'd imagine it will pop up here in Australia on SBS (which screens a lot of European television) in 6-12 months on a Saturday or Monday night under the title "Operation Moon".
I might go and suggest it to them now.:) Can't be all that expensive for them to buy in...
Brain Dead is great, while I find Bad Taste & Meet the Feebles to be a little... err.. crude for my highly refined tastes (except when I'm in that sort of mood, of course). Heavenly Creatures was a definite change of style, although it too was macabre in a much more restrained way.
I'm Australian, and there are few enough feature films from NZ that we've known about Peter Jackson for a while. I imagine no-one had heard of him outside this corner of the world until The Frighteners, and that was hardly the world's greatest film... I do remember seeing that he was getting major industry cred. in the UK/US from Heavenly Creatures soon after it was released, though, despite the fact it wasn't all that successful financially.
(Also, that film probably had a large impact on Kate Winslet's career... definitely gave her a better profile, and enabled her to become a megastar and then walk away from it all a few years later.:)
Designed obsolescence as a necessary part of capitalist operation isn't a conspiracy theory (IMHO). Have a look at the works of Vance Packard; he was writing about it back in the 1950s.
When I was last in Europe I just told everyone I was Canadian. Everyone seems to like them.
Most Canadians I've met have been decent types, and the accent can be pretty similar to some of the Northern US states (well, unless there's a strongly regionalised French accent in there as well). Incidentally, every Canadian person I've met has hated being mistaken for an American, which seems to happen quite a bit here:)
I could tell whether a French person liked me by what nationality they guessed I was. Canadian, they liked me. English or American, so-so. German, well, ah....
Well, the French and the Germans do have some messy history. WW2, WW1, Napoleonic Wars, etc.:/
(I'm Australian -- it used to be the case that people overseas would think we were American or English, and their demeanour would improve markedly once they found out that we weren't. These days I'm not so sure... global village and all that.)
Yes, this is getting pretty offtopic... I'm afraid I can't really think of an excuse on my end.:)
Peter Jackson is definitely not commanding a high salary (he doesn''t have enough experience)
He does have a good reputation as a director -- Heavenly Creatures, especially, gave him enough critical and industry goodwill that he could have made a couple of duds without losing too much credibility, and after these three films he should be in a much stronger negotiating position for any future projects.
But you're right, it's definitely his technical reputation and not his 'star billing' that enabled him to get the LotR films up.:)
I think "I could care less" is an abbreviated form of "Like I could care less" or "As if I could care less". So then they do both mean the same thing. Hey, it's unclear, but that's language...
However, I am inclined to agree with you on their gruffness overall...
mplayer is actually maintained by quite a few people. It just happens that the most vocal have the so-called searing attitudes.
I find it refreshing to know that suffering fools gladly is not a requirement in the open source world.:) After all, if you don't make people jump over a few hurdles every now and then, they'll never learn anything...
"The reason the country is run by a bunch of old people is because us young people don't stand up for our selves."
No, the real reason the country is "run by a bunch of old people" is because that bunch of old people has most of the money. No need to be ageist about it when being classist would be a more accurate response.
My mom's hilarious. She calls me with problems on her Toshiba laptop, even though the last three cmputers I've owned have been macs and she bought me two of them. Sigh.:)
Hey, it's a mother's prerogative to think that her children are perfect and can solve all of her problems. If that's not the case, try to let her down gently.:)
I think that's fine, but if you've been putting yourself out for people for a while and they're not doing anything for you in return, it's good to let them know rather than keep on giving. Some people give and take in equal measure, while others never really learned the joy of the "giving" part. Let them know that they've overdrawn at the karma bank.
(You know, like the American theory that anyone anywhere can understand English if you just speak it slowly and loudly enough.;-)
I don't think that's peculiar to Americans. I've noticed English tourists doing it on "the Continent". I'd probably have to check a Bill Bryson book to see whose fault it was originally.:)
1) Nobody likes a punctuator. If you really have nothing better to say then you're even more of a dull person than you make yourself out to be.
Oh, I have much better to say. I just enjoy the irony of someone too stupid to spell common words abusing someone in a position of power over him or herself.
2) It has already been pointed out by another person with too much time on their hands that I used the wrong form of principal. Maybe certain shut-ins should try reading entire threads before they waste their time.
Yes, I should lower my 'Score' threshold... to read more pearls of wisdom from twits like yourself?
Re: 3) Have you ever used a dictionary?
4) For the love of God, GET A GIRLFRIEND.
Already have one. Now, if I weren't working today instead of being with her, maybe I wouldn't be goofing off on Slashdot instead.
5) Briefly looking at some of your other comments, you seem to think that "..." at the end of most sentences is good English. I do hope somebody laughs at you for it one day.
It's poor style, but at least I know what an ellipsis is.:) I use it to indicate a pause -- as message boards like this have some of the immediacy of speech, at least as far as I'm concerned.
You took the time to look over my past posts, and you're calling ME a shut-in?:)
[PS: Moderators, please mod this post Offtopic... it definitely is.]
I soon found myself explaining to him that I was amazed that somebody so ignorant, arrogant and most of all retardedly stupid could become the principle of a high school.
He, at least, knew how to spell 'principal'.
A 'principle' is what you were standing on at the time.:)
Spielberg craves artistic credibility so much -- it's a terrible shame that those two films were so obviously 'Oscar-winning' without being good works of art in any sense. Spielberg is a good craftsman, but he's by no means an artist -- and too often his craft is all too apparent on screen.
Lucas, on the other hand... at least his pretensions are in the spiritual realm, where they're easier to dismiss.:) I'd just like to quote Harrison Ford here... "You can write this shit, George, but you can't say it."
On re-reading the above two paragraphs I'm sounding incredibly bitchy, aren't I? I really don't care about this issue, and I'm normally much more well adjusted. Sorry to trouble you, and I'll try to take my medication more regularly in future.:)

Mud wrestling, to take advantage of the "combat" decisions? Hair pulling, etc.? :)

By broad descriptions they're very much alike, but still Spielburg will be favored by any high-class film critic.
Any "high-class film critic" worthy of the name will turn their nose up at either director's work. BTW, it's "Spielberg".
Due process?
How awfully 19th Century of you, old chap!
I'm pretty sure he had a son -- Art Prior.
Is Richard buried next to Stephen King?
Interesting, Informative? A 4? For a troll's in-jokes?
Bah, I say.
