  1. Re:it needs a phone on Handicapping the 6th Generation iPod · · Score: 1

I think we're going to see the widescreen iPod ... you know, the one that has the virtual click wheel overlayed on the touch sensitive LCD screen. This makes sense with the showtime theme -- in fact, to go a little further out on the limb, I'm going to predict that it will be introduced along with a device for streaming videos to TV sets. Not quite a Media Center PC, but more like Airport Express Video.

    Add your predictions?

  2. Re:what would be really nice on MythTV Compared with Windows Media Center · · Score: 1

You know ... speaking of girlfriends and wives, MythTV must be the Linux project that has the highest wife acceptance factor (WAF) ever. We have two mythboxen in the house with a total of five tuners and 2 TB of disk space. We don't watch everything we record, but it gives us plenty of options. There's always a Mythbusters or a Most Dangerous Job sitting on the machine waiting for us.

Finally - that we can use it to play ripped movies and to feed MP3s into the stereo ... she totally digs it.

A few of the coolest things, IMHO, about MythTV:
    1) Scheduling in a web browser and ... wait for it ... watching my programs remotely in a web browser.
    2) Free listing updates.
    3) Automatic commercial skipping works awesome these days.

  3. Re:tag = pointless on Shuttle Atlantis Finally In Orbit · · Score: 3, Interesting

I wouldn't call it more pointless than the war in Iraq. That's pretty damn pointless. But clearly - the value in the space station, and probably the space program in general isn't from it's direct research value, but from the spinoff from it. Here's what I think the indirect benefits are:

    1) Pumping large amounts of money into defense contractors - particularly important for those contractors during peacetime. FWIW - I say take the 100's of billions of dollars we're pumping into Iraq, and divert it to NASA. Then you'd see one heck of a manned space program.
    2) All of the spinoff technology that come from doing such innovative things. Need I mention integrated circuits, advances in lightweight composites, Tang or the Nintendo Powerglove? Come on, where would we be without our Tang?
    3) National pride. Critics will argue the ephemerality of this one, but I would argue that it has real measurable effect. National pride is a factor in both the perception of America in the eyes of the rest of the world and maybe even our own perception of ourselves. Both of these are ultimately, in my eyes, good for America doing business in a world economy.
    4) Finally, the longest range effect (but maybe most important) is the increase in students pursuing science and engineering education. In fact, it probably translates to great numbers of students pursuing higher education in general. And this, I would argue, has the potential to be the biggest and most lasting effect for our economy.

    Anyway - just IMHO.

  4. Re:Another sort of question on Appreciating Your Stressful IT Job? · · Score: 1

I have to agree with the majority of responses to your question. The money of a job may seem appealing, but it doesn't compare to the fun and experiences you'll enjoy in school. I've been out of school and working for about 6 years now, and make very good money - but the happiest I've ever been (and everyone I know says this too) was in school, scraping to get buy. It's not the money, it's the experiences that matter!

I've also go to say that I agree you shouldn't look at college as just prep for your eventual career. It's a little bit of that, but its mostly about discovering who you are as a person, whats important to you and what your beliefs and passions are. I say - take as wide a variety of classes as possible: math, sciences, art, philosophy.

Finally, I would also say its about learning all about others. How to interact and value people who may be different and hold different values, beliefs, likes and dislikes from you, but are just as important in the grand scheme of things.

Stay in school. Work may sound good now ... but all these slashdot posters aren't wrong. School is the best, most enjoyable thing you will ever do. Jobs will always be there. But to really benefit ftom the college "experience" you need your youth, and you'll only have that now.

I agree with the original poster that Taken seems to have cribbed bits and pieces from all over the place. I must say, in Episode 9 - where people were seeing what they were thinking about. Well - I do believe that came from an episode of Star Trek - The Original Series. And I do think it was done better in Trek.

Also, the original poster is right on about how the first episodes were good, and how it went south in the second half. I say, just about the time Alison was conceived was where it took a dive. Of course, that's just IMHO.

I'll stick my .02 in ... I had AT&T and now use Sprint PCS.

AT&T was great, until the promo-deal I signed up on ran out. (I think it included an insane number of weekend minutes.) After the deal ran out, though, you have to commit to another year given whatever their current best promo is.

After two years, I switched to Sprint and am quite happy. I still have a year contract (allowed me to add extra minutes to their base plan), but the deal you sign up under stays in effect until you cancel service. The deal I have is 200 anytime + 300 evening/weekend all with long distance for $39.99.

The criticism that Sprint coverage is weak out of the major cities is true ... but I do a fair amount of work travel, and I've never found myself out of Sprint coverage.
