PUT AWAY YOUR PHONE WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. Stop doting on it's precious screen while you are driving and pay attention to basics like keeping up with the flow of traffic. I'm sure you are a great driver, and i'm sure you're great at multitasking too. Please don't do it on the highway. Telling other people who are not as good a driver as you to task load like this is just going to cause more accidents.

instead of spending time to hit the 'record' button on your windshield-obscuring mounted smartphone, why not shoulder check/turn the wheel slightly and avoid the pile up? or have you made your point only after you're in the hospital?

Agreed. Apache Helos and Abrams tanks look wicked cool, the designs are glorified in Hollywood movies, and an untold number of military fanboys have posted enough high res specs, diagrams and photos making modelling a piece of cake. the US military budget is six times larger then China's, and NATO is 2/3 of the entire world's military budget. Everyone has F16s, hummers, stingers, hellfires, etc. becuase the US is the world's biggest arms dealer. the US operates military bases all around the world. The PLA designers would have been idiotic to ignore such low hanging fruit.

Some of the responses to this article tell us more about the myth of American exceptionalism than it does the PLA's politics.

This looks like a loss-leader, and death-by-coupon isn't anything new. In a big city it's pretty easy to spot the restaurants in deep trouble; they start with coupon specials, which turn into permanent coupons. Then they start closing on Mondays and Tuesdays. Similarly, it's easy to spot a professional photographer that can't get steady work. Groupon isn't doing anything that hasn't been done a thousand times before, and there will be no shortage of photographers and restauranteurs with extremely poor business acumen. The summary and article portray (lol) the photographer as a victim in the inhuman Groupon grinder, and it's interesting how a poor business decision becomes a front page, slashdot sob story. photographers looking for work is nothing new; we just gave a lot of free advertising away, and that alone makes the Groupon deal the bargain of the week.

It's a hack, so it's interesting to someone. It might spark inspiration to rethink both solar conversion and sterilization technology. In larger context, the announcement also raises awareness of the problem of obtaining aseptic conditions in developing countries. Since the hack involves some off-the-shelf stuff, it's easy to start looking at practical applications or to scale-up immediately.

I like thinking like this, and not just from students. I wouldn't have failed them if i was their professor, i would have given kudos for a first try, but see if they could do better.
