Just what we need.. no longer will our data be wiped due to EMP or head failures, but because some knucklehead wants to pick his teeth with a punchcard. :)
There has to be some point when games will be so perfect, they don't need to bump up the number of triangles rendered per second, no?
I mean eventually, it will get so smooth, that things will be so close to "perfect", it will be considered "perfect". Sorta like calculators. I'm sure that any HP or TI calculator isn't going to need a 500mhz cpu, no?
At some point though, the speed wars will be less relevant for us, the home market. THe relevance is shrinking. As soon as we can do everything and anything well on a CPU that works at given speeds, we will be at nirvana. Prices will drop and the higher speed processors, the ones that go beyond our needs, will only be meant for specialty use.
Just like your need for a 1.5+ Ghz cpu is almost a specialty: video editing. There is a small community doing it, but not everyone is.:)
Yeah, but it's the same like WIndowsXP activation. The software makes a request to some psudo-foreign hardware for authentication, a dongle, an isp.. just about anything. In the past, people have broken this security scheme by just either modifying the binaries/programs to not do this call and continue processing.
It's a nice idea, but problem is, once someone's program is on your machine, youi can make it do just about whatever you want, supplying you have either the know-how or the tools written by someone else with the know-how.
Autocad used dongles.. and you know how much autocad gets.. 'shared'.
A defacto home-desktop-linux os. But this isn't all about caldera. This is about a bunch of small companies, teaming up to look like a big company and act like one.
Corporate types will be disappointed if they try to apply their present software purchasing and licensing mindset to OSS and GPL'd software. This disappointment might translate to a backlash against Linux/OSS and GPL'd software in the future.
This is what UntiedLinux is about though, providing support and licensing as if it were a Microsft OS. The Problem with trying to educate some, is that some won't listen. "It's just a hobby OS."
Their original mindset is more along the lines of Linux being a hobbyist OS. RedHat has eliminated that a bit by making it more of a desktop OS. It's no longer a freaky thing to be running Linux, much less MacOS.
Mac OSX falls into this category for a different rason. Now that MacOSX is a unix and can be bought as rackmounts from apple itself, it can now be more seen as a real server choice. Yes, "we can always run G4 towers and outperform blah-blah-blah", but it lacked the qualities of what a server is now, a rackmountable, true multi user system.
UniedLinux might add that quality that makes it a true office workstation OS, support AND per seating pricing, even if it is lower than MS's. Not too much lower. We have to make it look.. believable.
You realize, it adds validity to linux if they do try it, no?
Think of it. Major companies, some of them, charge on per seat basis. Here's where a little psychology comes in.
1. Major companies do per-seating purchases.
2. Major companies release good software. 3. Good software is worth looking at. 4. There's a distribution that does a per-seat lisencing. 5. UnitedLinux might be something good, otherwise, why act like it is worth while.
There's a proper term for this scenario, but all in all, it will validate that Linux might be worth-while.
Yes, this argument is flawed, as the number of people using a software much less it's lisence doesn't make software good or bad. "Look at windows!";)
Granted.. but perhaps it's more of an example to the world that they are bettering themselves. It may come to pass that certain areas of the world best run off of energy for that area.
I wouldn't exactly expect wind mill technology to be used in NY, much less solar energy be used by Iceland. Geothermal for them, perhaps solar for us.
Actually, to transfer a registrar, techonolgy-wise, it's just a request to verisign. If someone worked at a registrar, it is the matter of making a request to verisign to say "bob.com is now mine, mark myregisrar.com as the registrar". Since verisign owns the central DB, they know when all.com/net/org domains expire.
It is centralized around verisign. They just make registering domains a service that register.com, godaddy.com, etc.. all pay for to be registrars.
Or you can do it the hard way. Throttle their speed down to almost nil for legitmate work. When they complain about not being able to do anything, tell them it is because of the software they run. They need to shut it off. Make them learn from their errors...
Heh, too bad they couldn't fix the errors in the shows. I mean real errors.. like there being two starscream's "on set" at the same time, or colouring certain charachters incorrectly.
Or at least fill in the big plothole that Optimus was unkillable until the movie. Geez.. they shot him how many times?:)
How many people think the TiVo to be a useless device for themselves? I mean I miss my Fresh Gear and other favourite TV shows.. but there are other forms of entertainment that are just as good. Is it really worth paying for the device and service? I say read a book, but hey, that's just me.

19 companies combined can afford many lawyers. A teenager prolly can't. Doesn't excuse any actions, but that is the case.
At least it's not like "Empire Monkey B." Lord help us if we ever run into names like that agian.
:)
For those who don't remember, it was an annoying boot sector virus, easily transmited via floppies on insertion. Ran as a tsr and stuff
Sendmail has had a bad history. Granted. Sendmail is not so insecure anymore. And configuration of sendmail defaults will please most people.
It could be your boss's attempt at a warped punishment for you.
I hate taking dates to movies and they keep asking, "What's that?" Or "Who's that again?" Or worse yet, "Why is so and so doing this and that?"
:)
Absolutely right. I'm just talking about the ease of it all :)

Isn't step 3... profit?

Colouring books and porn ;)
Heh, with a wifi card and a connection to the net, not at 64k feet anymore. I could trade CC numbers while I fly across the US :)
