  1. Giant companies better watch out! on A New Bill Would Force Companies To Check Their Algorithms For Bias (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

Giant companies like Microsoft, Twitter, Facebook, Google Search and YouTube all have been claiming they can't can't be bias because moderation, trends, and recommendations are not done manually but with automated systems. Finally Congress is learning just being an automated algorithm doesn't make something impartial. Look at Microsoft's twitter bot that was made to be racist after just one day because it's algorithm responded to inputs. Not just that. It these algorithms often take into account flags by users which pretty much means if a bunch of users flag posts that have a specific word in them, the algorithm will start deciding that the word is inflammatory even if it is mundane. Say a lot of people starts flagging a word or hash tag like "#learntocode" then that word can cause you to become banned or get moderated.. that actually happened with the mundane phrase "#learntocode". Data science uses training data that often contains factors like race, sex, income, and education level that when included cause an algorithm to train to moderate or recommend people differently based on your assigned group. This in itself is not that horrible but it does create a divide among groups and could even be used to treat people differently based on a protected class which is a big no-no. It's about time regulation catches up and recognizes algorithms can and often are bias.

Meanwhile Stephen Colbert can say trump is sucking Putin's cock and that video gets recommended because "if it's okay for tv it's okay for YouTube." You absolutely don't want to be on the wrong end of a reviewer defining you and that is what happens all the time. Numerous people are claimed to be "toxic" even just for not liking a brand or something other people like, as if just not loving something is a crime. You can never let a small group of people or even an algorithm define toxicity ir some people will always be shut up and left silent.

It is digital so it has basically infinite coins already, depending on how small you chop it up, with quantity of coin determined relative to the value of coin.

There was hope that it would become a true currency that started getting accepted everywhere when countries allowed it or said they wouldn't ban it. It turned into a speculative investment instead. It was already accepted at very few websites and services but with the massive decrease in value even less websites and services are accepting it as a payment. Who would invest or accept payments in a currency with massive inflation? Basically no one that has alternatives. The downward spiral cycle is now self perpetuating. Even if a company does accept a bitcoin payment they want to convert it out of bitcoin as soon as possible so they don't take a loss, this just lowers bit coins value even further and the cycle continues. There has to be some massive event to stop the spiral and change public perception. Fake trade volumes can only hold off a collapse so long.

  10. Shady Companies already make copyright claims on To Avoid Demonetization, YouTube and Twitch Streamers Sing Badly Over Copyrighted Songs (theverge.com) · · Score: 3, Insightful

There are companies out there that basically mass copyright claim people hoping to steal their money. Twitch streamers and youtubers are approached by those companies so they can basically just attack any video with that person in it and try to claim it. The person gets a percent of the claimed video and the company takes a percent. It is insane how bad the system at Youtube is right now. You can't let the people trying to take more money decide whether something is fair use. That is just insane, in every case the claimant will say it isn't fair use just to steal the revenue from a video. It happens tons even to the biggest streamers in the world.

  11. This may work in rare instances on To Avoid Demonetization, YouTube and Twitch Streamers Sing Badly Over Copyrighted Songs (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

People still get demonetized just for singing or even humming songs. MrBeast got a video demonetized for singing less than 3 seconds of a a song. Yes, just singing it, and the person claiming the copyright had 1 video uploaded. But because Youtube lets the claimant decide whether it is fair use or not, random people like that can just do whatever they want, and particularly the big studios are basically free reign to choose what lives and what dies. There was also a guy who got demonetized for playing a song on a paper towel dispenser. Yes. The sound of the paper towel dispenser playing the song got the video copyright claimed. These are just extreme examples but millions of videos are getting demonetized just for singing a song with no music in the background so I don't see this new strategy working out.

The value is what people see them doing with those materials for resale value etc. It's all about confidence really. Same with these digital items. When a game's popularity goes down so does the price of it's digital goods. I just find it funny that 20 years ago no one was paying for skins and every company that did micro-transactions or charged for updates was hated. Now the whole free-to-play thing has taken off people can accept that digital cosmetics cost money. It's essentially people with money subsidizing those that want to play for free.
