Mitch McConnell: Democrats' Net Neutrality Bill is 'Dead on Arrival' in Senate (cnet.com)
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters on Tuesday that the net neutrality bill Democrats are pushing through the House is "dead on arrival" in the Senate. From a report: The U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote later today on the Save the Internet Act, which is the Democrats' proposal to restore Obama-era net neutrality protections that were repealed in 2017. It's expected to pass the Democrat-controlled House. McConnell was asked by reporters about whether the Senate would consider the bill once it passes. He indicated it would not, according to several tweets from reporters. McConnell's office confirmed the comment.
The Save the Internet Act restores rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission in 2015. These rules would ban internet service providers from blocking or throttling access to the internet. And they would prevent ISPs from charging companies extra to deliver their online faster to consumers. The Democrats' bill restores these rules and also restores the FCC's authority to regulate and oversee broadband networks.

Mitch McConnell: Democrats' Net Neutrality Bill is 'Dead on Arrival' in Senate
This is what the Democrats need to do, go down the list of popular bills congress should pass, send them to the senate so the electorate can watch them go down in flames thanks to Mitch McConnell. Lather, rinse repeat until the 2020 election and shine the spotlight on Mitch McConnell every time he shoots one of these popular bills down. Make him the poster boy for the demise of every reform, every popular bill imaginable. It's the best way to make his 'no to everything, it's my way or the highway' policy work against him. There are tons of people on both the right and left wing who want to seen net-neutrality anchored in law and for either Rep. or Dem. politicians to be against net neutrality is not likely to be a vote winner on either side.
All this does is shift the balance of power. Makes it harder for the ISPs to introduce their own services to compete with incumbent players. Sad thing is those same players will just use regulation to lock in their positions now.
Without net neutrality, ISPs will be free to slow down/block Fox News as they please.
But whatever, America isn't a country renowned for being insightful.
Shouldn't they craft something simple and contemporary that actually address the internet we know? Why are they reinstating rules from before the internet ever existed and trying to apply it to the internet? Sure some of the 2015 rules should probably be in place but it's dumb to lump it together with the old rules.
Just say no
"Nah. My Republican Senator is just fine and isn't the problem. Your Republican Senator needs to go, though.
People who don't care aren't against it. So that doesn't matter so much.
If they send enough bills, then the GOP will accuse the Democrats of wasting Congress's time by bullying the Senate and refusing to produce workable legislation, while propping up McConnell as a stalwart defender strong enough to resist the onslaught. Whether the bills are popular or not doesn't really matter... the bigger the number, the more it can be spun to look like political pressure.
That's really not a concern any more. No one is buying the Republicans' spin any more -- their support of Trump's extremism and criminality has inured all but their own most stalwart supporters against their spin and misrepresentation of facts, for which they've become very widely known to everyone except themselves.
His attempt to spin the Green New Deal by bringing it to a vote before the bill had had any markup, modifications, or input failed exactly for those reasons. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed us exactly how to counter such spin very effectively.
I say bring it on, and stop being afraid (which it appears is what Democrats, at long, long last, are finally doing).
I present for you the single largest obstacle to Democracy: Mitch McConnell!
This is an issue that a large majority of Americans want, and ol' Turtle-Neck can single-handedly block it, with no recourse. Not even Trump can do that, even with a veto, as Congress has the ability to override if desired.
No one man should have that power.
THE SOFTWARE, IT NO WORKY!!!
but is this gonna change how anyone votes?
If not then McConnell has the right idea. This is a high value issue for his donors and a low value issue for his voters. He'll collect his paycheck from AT&T, Cox, etc and ignore the will of the people because it's not strong enough to change what happens at the ballot box.

" Whether the bills are popular or not doesn't really matter..."
If the bills are popular (which I take to mean a significant majority of Americans support it across party lines), why would there then be enough support for McConnell "as a stalwart defender strong enough to resist the onslaught" to matter? Sure, people don't always act or vote logically but that's pretty far out there on the lack of logic scale.
I ignore Anonymous Coward posts. If you want to discuss something, that's awesome. Log in.
The Truth hurts doesn't it?
IMHO - I'm quite satisfied that this bill is dead... Keep trying dims... Truth is neither party can do ANYTHING alone, so the more they keep at each other the more Congress lives up to it's reputation as worthless. Which, in a way is good, keeps them from "doing something, even if it's wrong" for votes.
Breaking News: Mitch McConnell favors wealthy donors, details at eleven.
Seriously, this does not qualify as news.
That's really not a concern any more. No one is buying the Republicans' spin any more -- their support of Trump's extremism and criminality has inured all but their own most stalwart supporters against their spin and misrepresentation of facts, for which they've become very widely known to everyone except themselves.
What in the hell are you talking about? After two years of wasted effort and who knows how much spent, the Mueller Report came out and... completely exonerated Trump and the entire Trump administration. There was no collusion. No criminal conspiracy. Nothing.
I don't think you quite grasp how big a black eye on Democrats that is for those of us who remain in the center and are not suffering from TDS.
His attempt to spin the Green New Deal by bringing it to a vote before the bill had had any markup, modifications, or input failed exactly for those reasons. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez showed us exactly how to counter such spin very effectively.
What the hell are you talking about? The "Green New Deal" is a disaster and would destroy our economy and way of life. At best it's a socialist utopian pipe dream, but as Venezuela is currently in the process of demonstrating, those do not last long when they encounter reality. The majority of Americans already rejected the "Green New Deal" and the fact that literally not a single Democrat voted for it is proof enough that they're fully aware it's unworkable.
You seriously need to rejoin reality if you don't want 2020 to be another repeat of 2016. The Democrats are not winning back the independents they sent to Trump in 2016. If anything, they're sending them a strong message: stay away from us. We've lost our minds.
I may not be a particular fan of Trump's style, but if the "Green New Deal" is what Democrats are promising? I'll take another four years of President Trump, thank you very much.
According to the current top story on Fox news, it's immigrants flooding across the border from "50 different countries, including China, Bangladesh, Turkey, Egypt and Romania."
Yes, please tell us exactly what was in the Mueller Report and what it means. I'm sure you're one of the select inner circle who has actually read the report, and not just heard reports about Barr's obviously biased "summary".
If the report actually exonerated Trump and Co., it would be made public. The fact that it has not says volumes.
--- Most topics have many sides worth arguing, allow me to take one opposite you.
Mitch 'DOA' McConnell.
His BS is going to catch up to him, and his turtle shell won't save him forever.
Barr himself said it does not exonorate Trump. Why you lie all the time?
Big business pays for political campaigns.
Get it right, already.
Mitch McConnell could be fired.
But that would require the Republican base to vote for a *gasp* Democrat!
That won't happen.
Identity politics: lifelong Reps just vote Reps.
Believing lies: Democrats are socialists - it doesn't help that most Americans don't even know what socialist is: Sanders calling himself a Democratic Socialist to people who think a failed petro-state led by populist leaders with populist policies (like Trump) is socialist (Venezuela).
And then there are the abortion fanatics that fall for the lies that are told to them about Democrats being "baby killers" - people who are easily swayed by shallow jingoistic rhetoric that has no basis in fact.
And the gun nuts who believe that the "Democrats are going to take their guns."
Mitch McConnell is a symptom of our broken electorate. An electorate that is under the control of corporate propaganda that terrorizes its listeners so that they agree to horrible policies that hurts them in the end.
I just love the fact that many people who voted for Trump are getting it up the ass because of his tariff wars. They asked for it.
It's funny that the people who bitch the most about government keep electing the same assholes, like McConnell, into office.
Who's lying now? Barr never said that. The quote people refer to then refers to charges entirely unrelated to the supposed Russian collusion, and deal with whether or not firing Comey could be considered obstruction of justice. The report does not exonerate Trump on that specific charge, because it doesn't investigate those charges. It's outside the scope.
I'm not sure why Barr decided to quote something that could be so easily misunderstood outside of context, but he did. The report does completely exonerate the President on the whole "Russia collusion" conspiracy Democrats have been pushing since they lost in 2016.
It's not classified, it just hasn't been made public yet. You haven't seen it, how would you know if it's classified, or who it references, or what assets it refers to. You still lie all the time
What in the hell are you talking about? After two years of wasted effort and who knows how much spent, the Mueller Report came out and... completely exonerated Trump and the entire Trump administration. There was no collusion. No criminal conspiracy. Nothing.
I don't think you quite grasp how big a black eye on Democrats that is for those of us who remain in the center and are not suffering from TDS.
No, what you don't grasp is how completely ineffectual these shenanigans have become in moving public opinion. People are getting pretty good at recognizing Republican spin, and the media has become better at reporting it for what it is. Gone are the days when Republicans would ever be given the benefit of any doubt, and given their track record these last two years, very rightly so.
But go on, holler in your echo chamber and be comforted by the reflection of your own spin. You aren't fooling anyone else, so you might as well continue fooling yourself.
I may not be a particular fan of Trump's style, but if the "Green New Deal" is what Democrats are promising? I'll take another four years of President Trump, thank you very much.
More fool you then. I don't know yet where I come down on the Green New Deal, since the specifics have yet to be hashed out, but anything they come up will be far less destructive to our country, and our economy, than the last 2-odd years have been, and certainly less than 4 more years of this madness would bring.
So you're confirming the report does not completely exonerate him.
Too bad that Trump's voter base just does not hear the incessant "fuck you, plebes" messages from the Republican party and their president.
It's funny you say that when the economy is booming and the populace is receiving exactly the opposite message from Trump.. which is why his approval numbers have been climbing.
Now the Democrats... they are the one who pretend there is not problem at the border while thousands a day stream over, or people die all over from horrific imported gang violence. Talk about a giant "fuck you" to the minorities they supposedly represent. Whose jobs will all of those incoming minors be taking after all... when you import lot of poor people, the poor people already here suffer worse than anyone from increases in crime and job shortages.

It's not being made public because it's classified, idiot. Because of the ties to Russia, the Mueller report used certain overseas assets that could be burned if the report was made public.
Perhaps, perhaps not. What is extremely telling is their unwillingness to turn over the undredacted report to congress, which the law REQUIRES. If it had exonerated Trump, they would have been very eager to force congress to eat crow. Instead they're refusing to provide the complete report to congress as the law requires, which tells us a great deal, none of it good for Republicans in general, or Trump in particular.
I suspect it will turn out that much of the report can be released to the public, contrary to your assertions, but either way, the fact that they don't want congress to have it is very damning.

I may not be a particular fan of Trump's style, but if the "Green New Deal" is what Democrats are promising? I'll take another four years of President Trump, thank you very much.
It's funny how the cowardly right-wing always remembers Venezuela when talking about socialism but forgets the dozens of countries that are actual social-democracies and are quite successful.
But let me give you another thing to chew on. The USA is, and always has been, a democratic socialist nation. Any time the government exerts any control on the economy, it is socialism. This includes things like prohibition of some "products" like recreational drugs and prostitution. Licensing doctors, engineers and lawyers.
The only question for the USA today is do we want our socialism working to benefit the rich and corporations or do we want it working to benefit all?
If the bills are popular (which I take to mean a significant majority of Americans support it across party lines), why would there then be enough support for McConnell "as a stalwart defender strong enough to resist the onslaught" to matter?
Because most Republicans these days only care about the radicalized base in their gerrymandered districts, not the public at large. 70% of Americans believe a woman should have a right to a safe and legal abortion, but that hasn't stopped their crusade to shove women back into the 1950s. They're pandering to 35-40% of the population. This has been documented quite extensively by numerous media outlets on the left and right over the past couple of years. Where have you been? Reading Breitbart and watching Fox News?
Yeah, the report exonerated him about as much as the FBI not pressing charges exonerated Hillary.
That would be because Mitch isn't working for the common good, he's working for the corporate good.
The USA has not had Net Neutrality as law, except for a couple of years during the Obama Administration. What changes have NN brought? The best I can tell, only video and audio streaming websites, such as Netflix, have been effected.
Of course, if the ISPs start acting with impunity, and doing stuff, like blocking political websites, legislators could take action.
This. So much this.
This is the problem with Congress in general, not just GOP Senators. So that even with a 95% (or whatever) disapproval rating for Congress, everyone gets reelecte.

Looks like you are also in the inner circle since you know the summary is "obviously biased" compared to the original report.
If the Senate doesn't pass it, say goodbye to all the Republican Senators during the next election. Choice is theirs. Do as the Public wants ...(snip) .
Hold up there AC. I'm not so sure this is what the public wants... But let's discuss Republican Senator elections in 2020..
First up, There are 34 seats up for grabs in 2020, 22 Republican and 14 Democrats. There are 5 seats seen as toss ups, all Democrats and an additional 6 seats which lean one way or the other, 3 for each party based on past election results. Of course, the election is a LONG way away and we don't have any idea how this is going to play out nationally and each state.
IMHO Net Neutrality is going to be a very small portion of the picture this time around, if it even plays a role. As I see this, things like health care, immigration, the economy and foreign policy are going form the election landscape. And don't forget, an incumbent Trump vrs whomever will suck up the bulk of the oxygen and national news coverage, making Senate elections mostly secondary and regulated to local news coverage. The "coat tails" will impact the election more than this issue will, by far.
"File to fit, pound to insert, paint to match" - Aircraft Maintenance 101
I hate being a registered Republican. I don't consider McConnell, Trump, and most of the high level Republicans as being Republican. "Oh the Democrats are for something, we have to be absolutely against it!" What a childish attitude. (Of course, the Democrats at that level of government do the same thing when it comes to the Republicans doing something. Don't think I don't see BOTH major parties failing the country equally because they totally are.)
This is government at its worst. Petty in-fighting and bickering. Fools all. There's $22 trillion in debt and infrastructure is falling apart at the seams. Net neutrality is quite unimportant by comparison and this legislation should simply sail through both branches and the President's desk because America needs it to continue operating its network infrastructure upon which everyone has become dependent.
When you control the whole ecosystem and can sick the payment processors/ banks onto your enemies that isn't a level playing field.
It will be made public AFTER parts of it are redacted. That's the law, whether you like it or not. Details of grand jury procedures cannot be made public no matter how much you want them to be.
The Senate and the House may get to see the full unredacted report, but there's no law saying that they be granted that access. One reason is that some Congressmen just can't keep from blabbing stuff to the press that should never be made public.
We live in a republic, not a democracy.
Grow up.
Words change meaning. Some words gain additional meanings, such as "democracy." Stop trying to redefine it back to 19th century norms.
In modern parlence democracy refers to elected governments, almost all of which are "republics."
We live in a democracy. Only luddite Republicans afraid of women and minorities hide behind "we live in a republic, not a democracy" nonsense to justify their anti-democratic stance against the will of the people on an ever-wider list of issues, and now, these days, as a justification for suborning the very basis of our democracy.
Yes, democracy. Jackass.
The report also does not completely exonerate you from the accusations of you putting kittens in a blender. Logic much?
Maybe Barr should clear that up by releasing the unredacted report to congress.
Barr got his job by writing an unsolicited opinion on how the President could not be held legally accountable.
Totes the perfect example of an unbiased opinion bro!
Enjoy your #shitholecountry bro!
Should ? OK that implies a moral imperative for it to happen
No, it states (rather than implies) a hypothesis on how the market should work, according to capitalist dogma. Only those stupid enough to assign moral values to marketplaces (*cough* libertarians and republicans *cough*) would read a moral argument into what is clearly an opinion on how the marketplace should ideally work to afford the best economic outcome for its participants.
Some capitalists still believe markets should function for the good of the wider society and the majority of the market place's participants. An ever smaller minority of capitalists these days, but they do still exist. Although we are getting pretty close to the tipping point where capitalism will hoist itself on its own petard and collapse altogether, but I'd give that a couple more years even in this toxic and ethically devoid environment.
Even if both things were true, I'd rather deal with an intelligent, experienced woman who may have abused some email regulations vs. the bigoted, racist, homophobic, orange self-dealing "Ten Thousand Points of Lies" like we have now. (Sorry, 41)
This is where I stopped reading with any sense of value. Trump was just cleared by Robert Mueller and, frankly, a team of liberal-leaning lawyers that wanted to catch Trump (even if Mueller was not partisan, his team unarguably was).
There may be caveats in the 200-400 page breakdown from Mueller, but wouldn't it be bizarre if there weren't? With even an ounce of critical thinking, wouldn't it be even weirder if there weren't after he collected a treasure trove of private communications between Trump and one of his lawyers? And wouldn't it yet still be weirder if there weren't after the indictment and prosecution of multiple people?
Oh, my bad, I'm asking someone to think critically that has demonstrated an inability to do so. Trump cannot bring a bill to a vote -- the President simply does not have that power. My apologies though -- I'll move on to someone that doesn't idolize AOC.
When anti-trust was enforced the way it's supposed to be? When it was actually about consumers?
Now we have a bunch of rich old fucks who care more about money than the people. A government full of people profiting off their own decisions. A government that mis-represents it's citizens and calls itself the best country in the world.
Most of the world knows the citizens don't want this. An overwhemling majority don't want it.
But...here we are...the majority is representing the minority opinion simply because they're greedy.
Trump drained the swamp...and replaced it with a cesspool. Actually..that's insulting to cesspools.
they haven't passed one piece of workable legislation since the ACA. I mean, I wouldn't call that mess of a tax bill that _raised_ my taxes $50 bucks and resulted in more offshoring and job cuts (look it up, good 'ole unintended consequences) "workable".

the real problem is we accepted oligarchy in exchange for some minor bigotry and a general fear of change. The bigots are actually a minor problem. Sure, getting rid of their bigotry would fix things (since they tip the scales) but the real problem is folks who see things like minimum wage hike not as paying a living wage but as too risky since it might raise the price of a pizza 75 cents... Nevermind that it's just restaurants that saw a hike or that the hikes are small enough that it's just as likely to be inflation...
Point is, too many Americans living paycheck to paycheck and in a constant state of fear of change means it's damn near impossible to get them to want to fix anything. Which is working exactly as intended...

Why won't they make net neutrality an actual law? They've never even TRIED that.
Why they keep trying to force the FCC to do this under a weak ass "rule"?
Enforced by a non-elected appointed position with 'rules' that change with the administration.
Make it a real law or shut the fuck up about net neutrality. You're buying into the lies.

Mitch McConnell is a traitor to America. He hates everything it stands for and as long as he's alive will continue using his position and influence to destroy it. Not one action of his in years has been redeemable.
It is not a crime to eliminate him from this earth. It is a national duty and the only ethical and moral thing to do.
For a number of years, while Democrats controlled the US Senate, then-leader Harry Reid declared all Republican legislation "dead on arrival". Indeed, in one year alone under Obama, Harry Reid killed over 400 bills from the Republican House by just ignoring them and not scheduling any time to debate them.
As with so many things in the Obama era that were loudly cheered by Obamabots, and which I and others warned would likely go the other way someday, what was good for the goose is now good gor the gander.
I cannot wait for the Trump DOJ,FBI,and CIA to start spying on and trying to sabotage the leading Democrat candidate in 2020.... I's so very sure all the Obama supporters will cheer if Trump puts FBI spies into the Democrat campaign, lies to the courts about it, leaks to all the press about it, and (should he lose) leaves a bunch of his people in place in the government to sabotage the next Democrat president. Yup. I'm sure Dems would cheer all this and the people at "neutral and unbiased" ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, and CNN would all be fully supportive and bring on Trump people around the clock to spew crap about the Democrat being obviously a criminal and obviously guilty of treason....
On of the dark lessons of history is that political leftists always assume that the monster governments they create or control will never be turned against them --- and feeling so confident, they exercise little restraint in their political corruption.

You just proved GP's point.
Barr wrote a 19 page memo stating that he doesn't think the President can commit obstruction before he ever had the job. He thinks the President is above the law and that's why he was given the job. He was literally hired to hide everything. Is that enough bias for you?
You didn't counter the argument that other countries are quite successful.
But maybe YOU could create your own contry and live the ultimate capitalist dream. Why should I pay every time you need the police, firemen or the roads you use? You sure enjoy sucking from the government's teat, that sounds like socialism. Just buy some weapons and DIY.
By who? Barr's letter admits that the report is incriminating with regard to obstruction.
McConnell needs to go. If the same bill, or a closely worded one was already voted down by the Senate, then I could understand this. But for ONE man from ONE state to decide that something shouldn't even be debated or voted on is absurd. This is of course to protect his less scrupulous colleagues from having to be on the record voting down legislation that is wildly popular. Shame on these anti-democratic cretins. Own your positions you cowards.
> What in the hell are you talking about? After two years of wasted effort and who knows how much spent, the Mueller Report came out and... completely exonerated Trump and the entire Trump administration.
Except for the bit in the report that says it "does not exonerate Trump of obstruction of justice".
It was Trump who said the report completely exonerated him, not Mueller. That means it probably wasn't true - he made that up and said it knowing that there would be fools who just believed it and would repeat it.
YOU just want to pretend that the democrats are "just as bad as the republicans".
My point was that Net Neutrality wasn't important enough to voters to impact the election.
Most people I know, left and right, simply don't care about this issue, even if they have an opinion. It's not important. Further, I don't see Net Neutrality in any pollster's top 10 list of issues people care about. So it doesn't matter how many people say they want or don't want it. Face it, politically Net Neutrality is a dead horse, and if your party is beating it in hopes of garnering votes it only really means they are desperate to drive the daily narrative away from what is seen as more important.
Don't fool yourself. This whole thing is a desperate political move for "show" and not "go". Much like the House Republicans voting repeatedly to repeal Obamacare when the Senate was in Democrat hands and Obama was in office, then failing to ACTUALLY do it when they had the chance. This was nothing more than a show vote, a little bit of political theater... Only in this case, the "show" is playing to a very small audience, who's votes are likely already committed to vote for the players on the stage... Which, if you look at this and think about why the players are on the stage, says something important about what they think is likely to happen in the next election cycle.

It's like people can't read isn't it? The Meuller report does not exonerate President Trump. It actually specifically says that in it.
“While this report does not conclude that the president committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him,”
Someone will of course pop up and say that part isn't about Russian interference but the Meuller Report covered a lot of things.I would be very interested in seeing how close the President came to the line of the law and what side of morality he ends up on.

You aren't a centrist. You prove that by possessing far right authoritarian ideals. Like Venezuela being socialist. Term limits. As long as these guys can stay in Congress forever and keep getting paid by their lobbyists/donors things will stay the status quo.
Of course Trump came out for term limits at first but Mitch was quick to say that wouldn't be coming up for a vote or discussion either.
