Agreed. The point is that people (maybe not even you) leave crumbs around in twitter, forums, etc. (plenty of "throw me some BTCs here if you like this" links). So they can see the "associations". Does it mean that if there is a transaction from thief to known user, that the known user is the thief? Maybe. Does the known user know the thief? Maybe. Do they have no clue? Maybe. The only thing for certain is that they can't be certain.
BTC's public register isn't secret. Like stock trades, you can see the money moving around, and the article does a good job of visualizing some particular BTC floating around. They tie some of keys to ids they were able to scrub (i.e. forum user, etc). So if YOU aren't anonymous then you most likely outed yourself.
Does the FTA know the thief's id? Doubtful. They do a good jobs of tracing the money around, but that is about all you can tell. You too can follow the money at http://blockexporer.com/ They might track it to a website and if they had help from the website then to a login and an IP, then via a ISP w/ court order, perhaps to a paying internet customer. Who knows... Clearly anything MOST people do online leaves a trace.
BTC is basically digital cash and you need to treat it as such. The guy who lost his coins was careless on security. Somebody basically pick-pocketed him and he didn't find out until it was too late.
This would be great news if it meant we could get that unlock code when we've fulfilled our 2 year contracts to use on other carriers (like when traveling overseas).
I find it hard to believe that AT&T wouldn't try and wrangle me into another 2 year deal as I can't get the $199 pricing until Feb. 2011 (and for others I've talked to who got a 3GS). So once I'm on the hook again is when another option will become available in true Apple style. So I'm calling not until at least March... Of course it is possible that AT&T doesn't know Apple's internal plans. But they WOULD know when their exclusivity is up... so maybe...
But like everything Apple, it isn't true until Steve turns on the RDF....
All in the Subway parking lot. At $499/$599, Subway will be the only place you can afford to eat. Love the phone, but too rich for me. I'll wait for a future model.
Long ago when I worked at Motorola and they'd release some new tiny phone that they would charge $2K for (and this was in the mid 90's), I thought who'd buy it that at that price? Well, people did. And as time went on, the prices came down. So will the iPhone. Just not in time for my birthday this year...
Sometimes I guess there just isn't room if the city is well established. Take Cairo Egypt. Millions live there and they are now starting to build in the old Nile flood plain. Not a concern since they have the Aswan dam -- or it is? Are they just asking for trouble down the road? Will it be from a huricane? No. Could some bad guys do something to the dam? Possible. But if you've been there, you'd see that there really is no other place to build.
Ah hell, lets just all move to the mountains before global warming washes us away next!;)
Reminds me of the guy they interviewed on the Daily Show who happened to be at the Oprah show with his wife when they both got free cars. He was complaining about the taxes. Boo hoo. Sell one of the cars to pay the taxes on the other (and have some $ left over). Figure it out Mr. Grinch.
Can't pay the taxes on a stack of free ipods? Sell a bunch for 50-80% of value on ebay and you'll cover that quick.
Maybe they are waiting until they have some revenue to claim. Kinda like that company now taking apple to court over their internet auth patent claimed to be used by itms. Where were they before things got huge for Apple?
Not worth suing until you can get some $$$ to at least pay your legal costs with -- unless you just happen to be loaded and don't know what else to do with your money...
I'm pretty sure I don't agree with this tactic, but when you have organizations like the CSE out there trying to get Nader on the ballot for the sole purpose of taking votes away from Kerry, you have to wonder if this kind of behavior is here to stay.
Agreed. Back in the early 90's when I worked at Motorola, they said "use Motorola computers" when EVERYBODY else in the department (managers, programmers, sysadmins, etc) were saying go Sun. Needless to say we had the Motorola computers for about 6-9 months. A zillion problems later and tons of lost productivity they pulled them and got the Sun hardware.
Mandates from above suck. Always pick the right tool for the job.... and don't even get me started on "people in the US want LED displays on their cell phones". Damn you Bob!;)
As far as PB's breaking down, that would cost a bundle (as would any laptop), but you can get a 3-year extended warranty (covers EVERYTHING) for about $300. I thought it was worth it but will also be happy if I never need it (haven't had to invoke it yet).
Keep in mind that they won't extend it past those 3 years. When my old powerbook power connector came loose for the 3rd time I had to decide if I should fix it or upgrade. Of course, this was a $100 repair -- luckly it wasn't the display!

Exactly why I stopped using Netscape long long ago...
but sometimes a little desktop redux is needed.
I use WMII at work and love how little I touch the mouse. keyboard driven window manager. Nice!
But then I like vim. Notepad users need not apply...
...setup a Tor node!

Saw it on Daily Show.

Don't forget how well the Cuecat did for digital convergence! -- Oh wait.
What about using Ephod to load your songs? Seems like there are other options to ITunes out there for loading songs on your ipod.

Appears to be a PCMIA type-2 card reader.
They quote $60, less in bulk...
Not sure about mac drivers

You mean like the turnout for the $87 billion aid package? story here
Oh goody. According to deathclock I won't need to buy a new TV 'cause I won't make it that far...
There was 'xtunes' (later renamed 'sumi'). Here's the project page. Not sure what state the software is in though...
http://sourceforge.net/projects/xtunes/
Shouldn't be a problem avoiding that one...

Looks like somebody has a petition page going here:

So how fast can it solve it?
The article doesn't say?
