I'm talking about the mod chip that's needed to run this program, not the program itself.
If the courts believe that DeCSS's primary purpose is copying DVD movies illegaly then I think it wouldn't be hard to convince them that the primary purpose of a mod chip is to run pirated games (which just happens to be true, BTW; not that I think they should be banned just because of this).
IANAL and I may be wrong. If I was right then Microsoft would probably go to court already. But from what I understand the Xbox mod chip is a fairly new thing (but if it was possible then Sony might have done something to outlaw Playstation mod chips, which are known for years).
This applies to the recipient, not the author. It basically says 'Use any version of the GPL that suits you.' If the FSF created a GPL3 that required you to sacrice your firstborn to RMS or something there is no requirement for anyone to use it.
But if GPL3 says 'You can distribute modified binaries without releasing the source.' then it would be kinda bad, because all the evil companies would use version 3 then. Am I correct?
No word on backwards compatability, but expect it to be the Playstation 3 killer if it is.
(Of course it will be compatible - the Xbox is basically a PC.)
Remember how ridiculously overhyped PS2 was?
I expect the same with PS3. But why does it have to start now??
As for me, I don't own a console. The only reason I'd get one would be the games, not the technical superiority of a particular console when compared to another or when compared to PCs (which is simply not happenning anyway).
For example, there are no fighting games on the PC (Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Soul Calibur etc.).
But that's about it - I couldn't care less for the RPGs and the racing sims are comparable to what I get on the PC.
The FPS genre is pretty much nonexistent on the consoles (it may be starting to change).
But whatever you do, don't read the sequels. I made the mistake of reading Speaker for the Dead and from what I've heard it only gets worse after that.
What is it in my sig which suggests I might be reading it?
Spaces in usernames.:)
The main character created users with a space at the end of the username and used this to spoof messages from other users.

Spaces are valid in/. usernames. That is SO stupid.
You sent me five files in the non-standard, bloated.doc format that is Microsoft's secret, rather than in the international, public, and more efficient format of plain text.
Microsoft Word format, love it or hate it (OK, hate it), is more "international" than plain text. I mean it's more probable I'm gonna get someone's bizzare alphabet right (like my own - Polish) if he sends it in Word format rather than plain text.
Well, indeed, I'd rather have the fall of communism over any of the above as well, but here in Poland we usually think of the year 1989 in this context, because it was that year when the important things happened for us.
Yeah, that's what G. H. Hardy said about number theory back in 1940 (in A Mathematician's Apology). :)

Actually, it should be "Haiku Yoda writes.".

-jfedorIt's just the Sony hype machine again. Remember what they wanted you to believe about the PS2?
Of course PS3 is gonna be faster than the PS2. No, it won't be 1000 times faster.

Isn't there a macintosh version of FrontPage?

Blender is a closed-source product that stores its data in a proprietary format...
True, but it might change soon.

Its standard practice in consoles since the Atari days. But as Nintendo learned, there's no law against circumventing this to run unauthorized apps.
Ever heard of the DMCA?

FYI, Michael Abrash once worked at Microsoft, then went to id Software, and then left id and went back to MS.
So I think there are some programmers at Microsoft that you could learn from (not by seeing their mistakes).

What I meant was that of course the PS3 is gonna be an Xbox killer. But by the time it's released my VCR is gonna be an Xbox killer.

Maybe I just don't get the console culture.

And what happens when the 15 year old in row 27 loads up Gnutella and uses _all_ the bandwidth?
You setup some QoS rules at the router.
Or, you can just go and hit him in the head with something heavy.

Sure, if the flight is about 23 hours long. :)

Put some test text with scandinavic letters into text file, and try to grep it:
grep -i "[Ä]" test.txt
Hey presto - core dump. (At least this was the case with RH71)
Sorry, no core dump on my systems (RH7.1 and 7.2).
grep -i "[dhjklmnprstv][aeiouyÄÖ][dhjklmnprstv]ai" test.txt
And nothing happens even if you would have text that doesn't match.
Works for me.
(what you meant was "text that does match", I take it)

(Assuming I have Word of course.)
