    I don't understand, this means not to fund open-source projects (which would suck) - it doesn't mean they can't use them, right?

    I've been using bittorrent to download mpegs of television shows that haven't been produced to VHS or DVD; Invader Zim, Kids In The Hall ... in the month or so that I've been using it, the biggest problem has clearly been people whom have dropped off after downloading the content.

    How could one prevent this from happening? I can only see banning by IP as the only way.

    Isn't one of the best options for these schools to simply buy more Macintoshes?

    I assume you are being sarcastic; if you aren't, you must have missed the point where they discussed not having the money to pay for all of the Microsoft software. Where do you think they will get the money to afford the premium* that comes with buying an Apple computer?

    *Note: I don't dislike Apple computers, but I do realize that the experience and usability they provide comes at a premium. Even with an Educational discount.

    It's funny/sad/lame to me that eveyone here hates MS for being predatory and abusing their monopoly power, but nobody is taking Wal-Mart to task.

    Maybe it's that when Wal-Mart rolled into town they only offered a better value? Maybe its that they didn't require that all of the Mom and Pop stores to pay Wal-Mart a tithe everytime a screwdriver is sold?

    You would think that watching their software products get constantly infected by viruses would have brought this about?

    Oh well, maybe with a heightened sense of security they might get their software patched more often or perhaps switch to an operating system that isn't such a target to script kiddies.

    Why in the hell are you using Catalina/Tomcat in your project? It's just a reference platform! I mean, it's a very well done reference platform and useful for development purposes but if you are putting this out in production you should think about using something else, like JRun or ServletExec.

    I think the cable broadband providors are doing this just as a dog-and-pony show so they don't get regulated or classified in a fashion where there will be real competition.

    I think what we'll see will be that it will always be less expensive to go with the larger carrier than with their 'allowed' competitors.
