No, training is a very likely activity. I dont know what you mean by surprising a carrier, that doesn't seem to make sense. How exactly do you think a carrier prevents anything from getting close to it? They don't have force fields. A whack of missiles are essentially impossible to prevent from reaching a large target. It makes total sense that they would practice tactics to attack a carrier. Its an effective tactic to practice attacks on mockups before they could imagine they might be able to do it at all effectively. the US, Japan, other countries do these kind of exercises, and sometimes actually sink ships in wargames.

Probably less as a propaganda attempt, and more likely as war exercises. Its a totally logical policy to use mockups as practice. The US and other countries do this all the time. Its probably a very good use of limited Iranian defense money, as it will give them a much better idea of how to attack a carrier in an actual hot conflict.

did the US annex Iraq or make it a colony? Did they seize its oil and reserve it for Americans? Is Russia going to let Crimea be independent, and make its own decisions as Iraq does? The stupidest argument against standing up to Russian aggression is to say the US has at some points been aggressive. Thats neither here nor there. The question now is about naked expansionist Russian aggression and bullying. In this case, the US is not being a bully and aggressive, but needing for everyone to love her, and not make any difficult decisions that might piss anybody off.

The thing is that Russia dumping all its treasury bills isnt going to cause a panic on treasury bills --- people will buy them right up, the problem is when there is a crisis in confidence, when people believe there will be a default, that things will get worse, that the bonds they bought will be worthless or worth less then now, but if Russia sells their assets, it wont trigger a crisis. The example you bring up, is not at all the same. The banking crisis was when all of a sudden banks realized they had way more worthless assets then they thought, for some of them it threatened their solvency. I dont think you can say it made any currency worthless -- all that money is still worth about the same. A few banks needing bailout money, and a drop in economic production, a short recession, none of these are the crisis' you seem to be describing, like an entire monetary system collapse/destruction of the entire banking system of the US. Almost every bank is still around it seems.

Dont be stupid. Russia holds a mere $200b in treasury bills. Selling them would destabilize Russia more than the US. The US would buy that amount up in a few months. You have to understand the scale of debt - trillions in US debt exist, and 200$b is more like a little wave in a lake. China is opposed to Russia about the intervention, but they will not act on their opposition. The American economy is much larger than the Russian, and many other central banks hold way more US debt then the US.

I like to play Paradox computer games, at the other end of the spectrum of repetitiveness and thoughtfulness. For me playing DOTA 2 is a "simple" game, in that it does not have elaborate mechanics and a steep learning curve to start. I prefer complex and engaging, and I think MMORPGs havent yet gotten up to that. I like games that reward skill, thinking, strategy, and WoW had nothing to offer beyond the grind.

The prediction that Peak Oil premises all its gloom and doom on is that oil will become too expensive to use (as we do now). Its alot like Malthus' theory about agriculture, and population. However Technology is the big invisible input that breaks these pessimistic formulas down. Oil can become ever cheaper to extract, and ever more difficult and remote deposits become even more available. Peak Oil is also constantly basing its fear around the idea that there are few new deposits to be found, and the ones that could be available are not available due to security or poiltical concerns. Well, We know that there are plenty of new deposits being found, many countries that have not have reserves have found it (Israel, East Africa) in significant amounts. The world has gotten pretty peaceful, even in the darkest corners of Africa, most of the world is at peace. Angola was a country that was off the worlds markets because of security concerns, but that is a thing of the past. Tomorrow, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique will all be oil producers. Even Somalia may yet have oil deposits that will be discovered when the government has become more powerful. There are still massive deposits that will be discovered. The frightful thing is that cheap oil means that we need a political consensus to get rid of fossil fuels at a drastic cost. It would be much easier if there was just an economic incentive. We dont price the costs of respiratory disease into the costs of fossil fuels at all, and we will have to as the costs of health care spiral upward. Governments are going to be desperate for more money to pay for the increasing numbers of seniors. I dont think we could change 100% to renewables, nor is it desireable. We should have enormous amounts of nuclear power and electric cars, and renewables where it is optimal and possible.
