No animation or sound and keep them relatively small and I will read them.

Slashdot actually has a really good community but a tough one to force ads on. The problem would be getting people to white list Slashdot.

The problem is cost. Back in the day you put up an antenna and got free TV. Now thanks to cable companies their are fewer and fewer network stations. I live in a town of over 200,000 people and I can get one network OTA and like 14 channels. If their was no cable companies I would get all the major networks because they have made deals with those small stations. Now the stations get to double dip. They charge the cable companies and show commercials. The Cable companies also get to double dip and bundle channels you don't want to subsidize the ones that you do. I would bet you big bucks that a lot of people wouldn't pay what ESPN is asking.
I can tell you that OTA HD is so much better than the recomppessed crap on cable. If you live in a good sized city or near one I really suggest getting a cheap set of rabbit ears and see what you can get OTA. You may be shocked.

Funny but I doubt that the government cares too much about your buying habits.

I said this about 15 years ago and I will say it again. Anyone that thinks that normal email or posts on the internet are private is just dumb. An email is as private as a postcard. It is open text and always was. Get encryption or just accept that email is not private. Phone calls and mail is private and has protections. IMs and TXTs I am not sure if they are protected or not.
What you post on Facebook, Google+, Twitter and or Slashdot is so not private and if you think that it is well....
As far as advertisers. Well I am all for targeted ads. I want more ads about motorcycles, model aircraft, computers, and camping and less about adult diapers and viagra.

But it is true. Today we are in the "technology is bad" frame of mind and the "Technology is destroying the planet" mode of though.
But it is only because of modern tech that people have enough resources and security to care about nature. When you depend on your flocks to keep your family feed nothing sounds better than killing every apex predator in sight. No more wolfs or mountain lions? And the problem with this is. Too many deer and rabbits? Not if I shoot them and eat them. If you look at older cultures you will see ecological disaster after disaster.
Technology is the only way out our problems. Even solar and wind turbines are today pretty high tech devices.

"My application needs traditional text log files on disk, can I configure journald to generate those?
No, you can’t. If you need this, just run the journal side-by-side with a traditional syslog implementation like rsyslog which can generate this file for you."
Just run journal and rsyslog and you have both systems in place.
Untile journal does everything odds are that it will be run with rsyslog in parallel. A boots and suspender type of solution. if you want to have it also generate a traditional syslog I would think that adding that functionality wouldn't be all that hard.
