    But gaming is a small part of the PC market.
    The fact that notebooks are selling so well is proof of that. Very few notebooks can play high end games well.
    Once we can get 1080p at 60fps out of a cool running graphic chip a good 90% of the gaming market will satisfied.
    Until 32?

    Which FOSS player will play Hulu and which will play YouTube?
    Show me on that will play Hulu and I will agree that Flash is a proper open standard.

    How about this.
    YouTube requires Flash 8
    Hulu requires Flash 10
    I will bet that CNN needs better than 6 but I have not tested it.
    If those don't work then you are fubar.
    Nothing wrong with asking for something to backup some bonehead statement like 90 of the web only needs Flash 5 or Flash 6!
    Even that statement doesn't really fly from the start. Does 90% of the web need Flash 6?
    Because if it works on 6 it should work on 5!

    Do any of them support 100 of Flash 10?
    Gash supports Only Flash 7 with parts of 8 and 9.
    Flowplayer is only a video player.
    Swift tools also seems to be only a video player.

    So no even the GNU project can not seem to produce a FOSS Flash player with support for even version 9 of flash much less version 10!
    Stop drinking Adobe's cool-aid. I don't even own a mac or an iphone but Adobe has seemed to have dropped 10.1 Linux 64 support.
    That is the risk of letting a single company any single company control a "standard"

    To me devices like the iPad and PS3 are choices.
    They do not prevent me from writing code for a different device or even creating a different device.
    Take the iPad. Right now there are many other tablets getting ready to go to market. They are going to be based on Linux and Linux plus Android. Maybe Palm/Linux
    But if Microsoft or Apple can prevent them from coming to market with software patents...

    To me they are the head, heart, and belly of the beast.

    Exactly. Adobe will support what ever platforms make the most money for Adobe.
    That is why they want to be on the iPhone so bad.
    But they will always be in control. We must have an open standard for this and now.

    Actually I hate to say it because frankly I do find many of the comments on Slashdot to be rude, inaccurate, profane, and immature when compared with the comments on Digg, CNN, and TCPalm it is like going to a formal dinner with Nobel prize winners, statesman, and versions and sundry PHDs and people that spend their time working with worthy charities!
    Good heavens have you ever read the crap on CNN.com!

    So there is less of an incentive to produce easy to use and bug free software? My company doesn't pay support for many of the programs we use. They just work and do what we need them to do.
    Honestly this is a problem for FOSS development. In the long run I have to wonder if FOSS OSs only real chance in the consumer market is through hardware makers. By not having to pay for an OS and be dependent on an OS maker they can increase profits and control.

    In the end I feel that there will always be both closed source programs and FOSS. Each will fill a need and I hope work well together.
    The zealots that say that all software must be free I feel are at best out of touch.

    Of course as far as Free as in Speech software goes I feel the real battle and enemy is NOT closed source software.
    It is software patents.
    Those must be stopped.

    I mean really? When you say SCO you might as well say Groklaw for most people on here.
    Of course it is also hard not to use some colorful language before or after those three letters as well.

    I want 1440 dpi. 300 dpi is so lame.
    I find printed letters are often fuzzy and I can see pixels all the time.
    I want real life resolution!

    Actually I am kidding. I would LOVE to have a 22 inch monitor with 300+DPI.
    Don't know if I will see it at a price I can afford but it would be nice.
    To be honest since I am not a graphic designer and I have worked on computers since the days of the Commodore 64 and Kaypro 4 modern displays are pretty stinking nice to look at :)

    It is called marketing.
    Tell you what. Show me where their is a turbine on an Intel I7 and how it speeds up the CPU when you use Intel's Turbo Boost technology and I will all bent out of shape over Apple's Retina display.
    It is market speak and it is everywhere. It usually only bugs you if you don't like the product, the company, or know how stuff really works.
    Frankly I just tune it all out and don't let it bother me anymore.

    Actually no.
    Maybe for the people that are buying the Nexus 1 but 99% of all the people that buy the iphone or Android phone have no idea that the Apple store is restricted.
    People are buying Android phones because.
    1. They are not on AT&T let's face it but the Backflip does suck as an Android phone.
    2. They are on Verizon and the Droid ads are soo cool.
    3. They don't want a Blackberry,
    4. The Palm ads where too creepy.
    5. Windows Mobile? what is that?
    6. Nokia? do they still make those (US only)

    I have an Android phone. I got it because I wanted an Android phone and I really don't like AT&Ts pricing and coverage in my area.
    I do like Sprints so I got a Samsung Moment.
    Would I have gotten an iPhone? Sure if it was on Sprint and I could get the good plan that I am on. Frankly I can not run all the software I want on my Android because some of it has not been ported. The iPhone does have more games than my Android.
    Frankly the restrictions on what goes into the app store really doesn't effect most users and they really don't care.

    Well A 1U case is an extreme example.
    But CPUs are getting cooler and cooler per mip these days.
    No I wouldn't use a tiny case like this for a CAD workstation or gaming rig but for a small business PC or student PC it will be fine.
    The truth is that most PCs are a lot faster than they need to be for most users. Speed issues tend to be slow ram, drives, and frankly malware.

    Not really.
    Walk into any bank, insurance company, or government office. Lots of PCs that are not using big hot cpus or big hot gpus.
    For those type of places small is good as long as it is cheap.

    You do not need a big case for good airflow. In fact the best cases often have ducts to direct the airflow. Also people are working hard to cut down on heat.

    They also show the link to you in the feed but not in sms of course.
    This is actually a good thing because it will be a tiny bit harder to hide where the link goes.
    But notice I said a tiny bit harder. You can still use bit.ly and Twitter will wrap bit.ly.

    Well it is no more spying than a cop with a radar gun.
    The Police have used aircraft for traffic enforcement and other activities for years. Then you have the potental commercial use for drones. Everything from crop dusting, news gathering, pipeline and power survey flights...
    Even things like pollution monitoring flights fisheries management.
    Right now there are lots of jobs that are done by light aircraft and helicopters that could be done with drones.
    They could even be used for forest fire monitoring.

    Lots of none spying jobs they can do. Plus if they really wanted to use them for spying they would without getting FAA regulations.

    Of course in a way you can not blame people. Imagine if you had a known terminal condition and there was nothing that could be done.
    At that point the idea of what do you have to loose becomes very real.

    Yea it is a pure PR site. To me this is totally expected and none issue.
    I mean really what would expect from a BP site? "WE TOTALLY SUCK AND YOU SHOULD HATE US!"
    They had two real choices.
    They could have put up nothing and pretend it wasn't happening or put up one that puts a positive spin on the disaster.

    Just not news IMHO just normal. Nothing to get up in arms over unless something on the site is not true. Spin while annoying is just tell the truth that you want people to hear and is how everybody works.
    This is nothing to get worked up over. Other things that they have done are but this... Just not really a story since it is a total duh.... of course they did.

    And when they broke it was their problem.
    Actually it is good to give the programmer the freedom to go right to the hardware when they need to. The problem is that with out a proper abstraction you where stuck with no way to write really portable code.
    And actually I don't remember any none game apps for the Amiga that did what you described.
