    Welcome to the modern enlightened world. You see way too many people feel that patriotism is stupid. If you join the military you are patriotic and so you are stupid. Why should they care?
    I have seen people refuse to stand for the National Anthem on Veterans day at an airshow. Did you miss the people complaining about Google have a banner for Veterans Day?
    If people will not stand and actively complain about a Google's Veterans Day banner why should they want to fund or fix the VA? That actually costs real money.
    Yea we should fix the VA.

    Okay should I have just said that their is not practical way to do a double blind test of this. I just get tired of people with people that read one issue of skeptics magazine start talking about doing a double blind test of this or that when it is impossible.
    The best practical way to do this test would be a single blind test. Even then you couldn't prove causality. It is possible that people violent people might like violent video games. So they would tend to play them more than people lacking those violent tendencies. Kind of the same problem that you have with porn. Sex offenders tend to be read a lot of porn. That doesn't prove that Porn causes sex crimes.

    Except that Manhunt2 is baned in the UK... And not just rated AO. Also in the US the games ratings don't carry the force of law like they do in the UK.

    How would you prevent them from playing violent video games outside of the after school programs?
    You just can not do a true double blind test for this problem. You would have to restrict the access to violet media for an entire childhood. Just really isn't possible.

    That is IMPOSSIBLE!
    To do a double blind study the subjects must not know there is any difference! Just what placebo could you provide for video games?
    Double blind studies are great when you can do them. For most behavioral studies that is impossible.

    Again you fail to notice that I am not drawing any conclusions as to video games causing violence or not causing violence.
    I am commenting on how people that are so sure that they are rational and open minded are willing to toss away there open mindedness when it threatens something they believe is true.
    In this case that belief is that violent video games are harmless.
    The same people that are dismissing video games I am sure can list some book or movie that they feel "changed" or "influenced" there life.
    As I said I am not really trying to draw any conclusions on video games. I am pointing out an observation about people on Slashdot.

    What I find funny is that I am not trying to make the argument one way or the other.
    My post was more about how people that in their heart feel that they are critical thinkers are willing to toss it away in a second when it suits them.
    They know that in this came violent video games are harmless and will toss away any study that goes counter to that belief.
    I don't think that violent video games can make a none violent person in to a mass murder. I am just willing to look at research that says that it may have a negative effect on people.

    Let's face it if someone said that "I suspect video games increase real world violence and I have yet to see any evidence to the contrary." I bet you would call them an idiot.
    I see a HUGE case of people believing what they want to believe on this issue.
    Everything from, "I play violent video games all the time" which is right up there with. "I smoke three packs a day and I don't have cancer."
    To your statement that you believe that violent video games reduce violence because you have seen no proof the the contrary.

    I doubt that violent video games can make a none violent person violent. Could they help make someone that has violent tendencies more violent? I don't know and I doubt that you know the answer to that question.

    So why dismiss a study just because you don't like the result?
    That is the exact opposite of the being rational and scientific.

    Funny but does it seems that people want it both ways.
    I have seen time and time again about how this book or this movie has changed someones life. I have seen people say that religious movies, books, and or teachings in general barin wash people.
    So why is it that people are willing to say that violent media doesn't have an influence on people?
    I have a friend that will not allow his kid to see "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" and edited out the religous content of veggie tails videos but at the same time states that violent video games have no effect on people.

    Do can media have an effect on people or not?

    You mean the version of GPL that has the anti-tivo clause in it. Gee I wonder why Google wouldn't want to use that...
    BSD LIBC has been used in Linux before. Several commercial Linux programs have used bsd libc so they could statically link it with their software. lgpl doesn't allow this. It allowed the the commercial software companies to create executables that just worked with out having to make their software FOSS.
    I am just waiting for GPL V3.1 where the FSF will make it illegal to link a programed compiled with a GPL compiler to a none GPL libc.

    A bit of simplification to say the least.
    Tesla's partner George Westinghouse sure didn't die broke.
    Tesla would have had a nice comfortable life if hadn't blown his money and tired to invent a way to transmit electricity without wires.
    Tesla was a brilliant inventor and a crack pot. He did live out his days in a high class hotel living off his fame and through the generosity of the people the he helped make rich. However he didn't take care of his own finances well.

    So reporter thinks that Sun might sue Google for forking Java all the while over looking the fact that Sun has GPLed Java and that other groups have produced versions of Java with out getting sued. Google and Sun both are saying that they are working together.
    In other words a none story.

    I am not in any way bashing Samba. I think they are great but as I said Bill Gates no more ported Basic to the Altair than Samba team ported CIFS to Linux.

    He didn't port basic. He wrote a Basic interpreter for the 8080!
    I am not a Microsoft fan. In fact I am a Linux user but give me a break.
    If Bill Gates ported basic then the Samba team ported Microsoft networking and the Mysql team ported SQL!
    Porting means you have the source code to a program and you get it to run on a new cpu. Gates, with some help wrote a Basic interpreter for a tiny cpu in assembly. He WROTE a version basic for the 8080. He didn't port it.

    I think the attachment rate will go up as more and more games come out. Take a look at the DS. Lost of adults/casual gamers have those and GBAs.
    Take a look at the "Must have" list for the Wii. I am seeing more and more titles that people will buy for the Wii and keep. If the soccer moms like the games and then the kids find games they like it becomes a huge win.
    When Nintendo came out with the DS I thought that was the DUMBEST idea ever. I figured Sony was going to eat there lunch. I was so wrong.
    When Nintendo was talking about the Wii I thought well that may be interesting but the PS3 is just going run away and hide. After I saw the lines at E3 I changed my mind.
    The Wii doesn't have the graphics of the PS3 or the 360 but that just doesn't matter. It has some very good games and is fun.

    Mine was an early Nano so maybe Apple is improving. I am happy that Apple doesn't seem to fall for their own hype unlike Microsoft. I have noticed that every verson of the iPod seems to have some small improvements over the last that most people would never notice. I am not bashing the IPod. I think it is a good product. I am bashing the hype that it is perfect product.

    Do you have a nano? Because mine feels almost totally slick to the touch. Don't get me wrong I don't think it sucks but it is no where as good as the hype. Frankly I don't think any UI on the planet could be as good as the hype on the IPod.

    You where wrong in EVERY aspect of your comment. You said that Poland was purely GSM. It wasn't You then implied that he didn't know if his phone was GSM or CDMA and it was. Now you say that was insignificant.
    There is no reason to say your sorry for being incorrect. Making mistakes is one of the ways that we learn. You have learned that in at least two cities in your country CDMA service is available.
    I wasn't trying to force you in to matching my expectations. I was just observing your actions. No matter how many facts you get wrong you must go forward with pride in your errors. I call you insulting because you where. If I see someone snatch a purse on the street and I call them a thief that is not being judgmental that is being observant.

    "Humm, troll" Not insulting ? Not in error. A troll implies that he is a liar and or just posting to cause an argument.

    So in the end the only thing in your original post that wasn't wrong is that you live in Poland or Russia.
    You errors and mistakes have no real impact on my life. I doubt that the guy you posted at really cares because he has proven himself right. More just trying to help you see your own actions more than anything.

    I hate to even post this because it could cause many "hard core" gamers and teenage boys that currently like the Wii to toss it in the trash.
    The Wii is still a big hit and is still the thing for Christmas this year. My wife is on several scrapbooking message boards. This of sort of like slashdot for moms. Guess what they are all trying to find for there kids this Christmas? It isn't the PS3. Now for the really bad news. The women on these boards love the Wii! Some of them are "test" playing it themselves. Top it off with the fact that one of the favorite games for these women is Guitar Hero III.
