Always interesting and insi... Oh, sorry was thinking of something not written by Michael. His articles always have added commentary that is disinsightful and toned in a way that presents all the worst bad nerd traits.

Stop. Please. You're hurting Ame... Well, Slashdot. Unfortunately, it's not as straightforward as delisting Katz who just wrote silly articles, his news posts are pertinent just never his added comments.

Oh and to take a stab at being OT, Quicken will never get any of my money if their going to play the shell game with products they sell.

I think you're right. It's fine, it's just what someone wants to do in their own home. People are free to as long as it doesn't mess with me. Centralized censorship can eat a dick, individulized censorship is fine and already exists in plenty of forms. This is just a more intelligent, technology aided version of the rating system.

  5. I posted this elsewhere, but anyway on Free Comic Day! · · Score: 4, Interesting

Allow me to make some recommendations of comics to pick up alongside the freebies. if you do Free Comics Day. One should not discount this form of communication, as I find the storytelling to often be better than movies and tv.

-The latest issue of Shonen Jump. This is a manga compilation from Japan. It has the familiar (Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh, YuYu Hakusho) to the odd (Sandland, Shaman King, One Piece) and it's like 5 bucks for a small phone book of stuff. An incredible investment. Plus, it's a magazine so there's bunches of other stuff.

-Ultimate X-Men. It's like at issue 33, but it's a reset of the X-Men universe. Should be approachable by everyone. The current storyline is Return Of The King and involves Magneto, nice stuff.

-Fables. A new story started this month with the 'mundies' investigating all the fables that have fled to NYC. Bigby Wolf, Blue Beard, Snow White, The 3 Bears, they're all in the story and adapting to modern life. Great stuff.

-Astro City: Local Heroes. Very approachable, a series of one shots that talk about life in a super hero city. It's... The Steriotypical super hero city where they make up a normal part of daily life. It's explains superhero life better than Superman ever could.

-Transformers. They just started a new series with issue 1 this month. Dreamwave is doing a great job on the art, and well with the toys long dead they can make a story that isn't puddle deep. The War Within is another 6 issue series that you might be able to find and it goes back to the first civil war. Awesome design, with Prime, Megatron and Grimlock taking the spotlight. It goes unsaid to ignore Armada.

-Fray. For you Buffy fans in the house, Joss is writing the story of a Slayer in the future. Good stuff, it's 8 issues long with 7 out already, so you might take a look. The character is cool and really isn't like Buff or Faith.

-Girl Genius. Some of you magic players might recognize the art of Phil Foglio with this title. It's a steampunk setting, with mostly good and funny storytelling. Sparks have the ability to build great contraptions, and the main character is a fairly useless clutz without a Spark... So it seems. It regularly makes me LAHL.

-AgentX. This is Deadpool actually, still kicking... Well, for a couple more issues. Anyway, if you like 3 Stooges and violence, then read this. Definetly one of my favorites. Actually, it was even better with a previous artist that had a strong anime f flavor that hit the spot just so... But oh well.

-Queen and Country. British intelligence agent, a really serious tone. They handle shitty situations and make the world a better place. Makes for better storytelling than most movies, as it covers Tara's exploits.

And, if you so want to invest in something bigger:
The Authority: Relentless. A Trade Paperback of Warren Ellis' first 8 of 12 issues on The Authority. They're a super hero team, but in a much bigger way than the X-Men, JLA or such. They've changed what superhero teams can do by making it so much bigger. They save Earth, kill 'god' and stop interdimensional invasions. The dialogue is great and villains don't just mwahaha.

If you goto the store, you'll notice my lack of DC/Marvel titles. Yeah. Keep that in mind. They're alright, but they're mainstream. If you want something that will change your opinion about comics, they are most likely not it. Anyway, hopefully this should give some good leads as to see what comics can be more than just Supes and the X-Men.

  9. Overview of the device on Nintendo Embedding Classic Games on Trading Cards · · Score: 1

Alright, alot of people didn't look at the article and therefore have some misconceptions about the device.

It's a playing card reader that plugs into the GBA, with a link passthrough that allows a connection to the GameCube with proper cabling. The cards that it reads are not em-based or anything. It uses an optical dot system much in the spirit of the punch card system. Nintendo will be selling packs of classic nintendo games that can be scanned in, but these will mostly be first generation games as there's only like 2k of space on each long edge of the card and less for the other side. Nintendo will also be implimenting this eReader system with it's Pokemon Trading Card Game cards, so you can scan in cards and get stuff like minigames, songs, strategies, information, etc. Gamecube games like Animal Crossing can use the device with Animal Crossing cards, to scan in textures, songs, letters and more in the game. I don't know how else it'll be used, but my curiousity is piqued. Also it looks like it'll be fun for GBA programming contests if we can unravel the programming language.

I've read lots of people saying how pencil and paper RPGs are dying out, etc etc... Well, maybe but I'm still playing. We have a group at OSU, made of half staff, half students and play Aberrant (White Wolf's supers RPG) and Deadlands (weird wild west) about once a week each. The group has been going for 3 years or so, with some rotating membership but I have to say having the gaming group is probably one of the best things in my life. The fact that I always know that I'll be hanging out killing an evening with friends in some crazy setting, its great security. I usually pick up a gaming book or two a month, and I actually just picked up a Gurps book at Marcon, Technomancer. However I'm not crazy for the rules, so I've been figuring how to convert it to Storyteller, but thats whats cool about Gurps, they're meant for that. Gaming may be on hard times, but we just need to introduce a new generation to it.

ps. And yes, I'm play plenty of videogames but those don't hold a candle to a good gaming session

My friend used to do Vampire LARPs, and I was having him explain the whole ordeal to me... I was amazed by it! People want to be sneaky and back stab other people and get fame at the expense of others... Blarg. I would hate to have a friend do that to me or vica versa. Thats why I play a superheroes RPG like Aberrant . Its fun. The good guys generally win. I get to play nice with my friends. Bleh, who needs depressing?

  23. Katz doesn't get it. on Review: The Mummy Returns · · Score: 1

This is a fun movie. In fact, I would say this is the most fun I've had at a movie in ages. I went with the guys that I game with we went in expecting great camp action. And we were happily provided. I mean, even the characters were aware that it was the same thing all over again. And it was made to MST3K your way through, no question... Lemme see some of the stuff I said:
"Dude, she got a new character class" re: Rachel Weiss' character now kicking ass.
"Poor extras, they should have known what was going down since they had red uniforms." re: The bad guys 'Stormtroopers'
"He bought mega dex!" Re: Bredan Fraiser's character catching knives out of midair.

Just lots of dumb, silly and incredibly enjoyable stuff. Ahhh. I've got a fully happy stomach.

  24. Ohio State University policy on A Diploma and an Email Account for Life · · Score: 1

While OSU isn't able to provide lifetime email (We've 80k users as it is, with the smith.xxxx name approaching the 4000 mark for example), we do email forwarding for life, and its run through the alumni association. This provide everyone with what matters, the same name for as long as you want, and what is viable, using someone elses account. I think this is an excellent solution and will be very glad to keep my same email address. In the 2.5 years I've been here email has gotten more and more important, while the usefulness can be hampered if you have to worry about the logistics of getting a new address every couple of years. Who do you trust to keep in business for the rest of your life? The only other organization I would trust to do it would be the Post Office or some other federal body.

In other words, yay for common sense.
