    yeah, cos setting up your own record label like Ani did is really cheap and all.

    And no, most people haven't heard of Black Flag, The Dead Kennedys or Ani Difranco.

    Yeah, that crossed with the problem that the rich poor divide is huge, and people can earn more looking after cars parked in the street than teach.

    But I have been to the valleys in Kwazulu Natal, and they do need running water, electricity, homes that aren't falling down. And the AIDS problem there is huge.

    In the UK I get 500 minutes and 500text messages and 500 wap minutes a month for about 35$
    I'm quite happy with it, its about the cheapest monthly plan you can get that gives you a lot of text messages.

    Text messages is mostly a teenage thing here in the UK, but many adults happily use it as well. Its very handy for communicating with someone when you're not able to talk, say at a conference or in a lecture.

    Most people these days are running on 1024x768 according to hits on my (computer related) website and on my friends bird watching web site.

    on mine its 40% for 1024x768 and 6% for 800x600

    They bloody well should be.
    Spiderman was an awful film, full of wooden acting, poor special effects, cheesy dialog, and the green goblin looked like a cast off from Power Rangers.

    Its up with American Pie 2 as the only movies I wish I had walked out of and done something better with my time.

    The GNOME API remainded backwards compatible (IE, no functions taken away, only functions added) throughout the 1.x series.

    The transition to 2.x allowed the API to change, meaning that applications that were written to 1.x APIs would not always compile with 2.x libraries. This is common, and KDE and QT do it as well. The 1.x and the 2.x libraries are parallel installable, so that you can have both installed on your system.

    The GNOME development platform is now backwards compatibable in the 2.x series and will remain so until 3.x

    At least, this is how I think it works.

    Well even if the label is a truely "indie" label, the big five still make money out of the CD sales as they are the distributors. So unless you buy directly from the label, the big five are going to get some of your money.

    GMF never got started,
    GStreamer took over from it, had the same idea and more developer time, so it got to where it is.

    GStreamer does actually work these days, plays most of my avis (has some issues with broken ones), all of my mpegs, all my audio (mp3, flac, ogg and wav), and I'm using it in my own audio editor program.

    But so we shouldn't start an ambitious project because it won't get finished? Seems rather defeatist.

    The main problem with using QT is not that it is C++ or awkward, but its size. To get QObject as far as I am aware you need to get the whole freaking QT.

    To get GObject you need to link to a very small 300K library.
