Now in 2006, Darwin is an open source and has a potential to support more hardware. According to this link, it seems to support quite a few hardware.

Back in 1992, Steve had to fight against many more vendors than today, including Microsoft and Apple. Things are different now. Microsoft may not be so eager to destroy the enemy, fearing another anti-trust lawsuit. Apple is gone (or not?), etc.

But I still wonder if that's in Steve's mind: to become a software company.

There was very little, or more like no, fanfare about this, but considering that WebObcjects cost so much till a few days ago, isn't it significant that now it is free (as in beer).

The car manufacturers want people keep buying cars every three to five years. Tell them that your car is obsolete and you'll have to switch to hybrid or whatever.

But where do those inefficient cars go?

When I was visiting Bangladesh, I saw tons of Japanese cars. Many of them still had signs that they used to run on the streets of Japan. Obviously, it is cheaper to export used cars cheap to the third world than to scrap and recycle the material. Thanks to the quality, those cars would probably last for another decade or more. Making people in Japan buy new, more efficient cars don't help much in "global" sense.

I wouldn't say such an initiative motivated by economic concern is evil, but the picture is not as bright as it would seem.

The i18n support of OS X is much better than any other OS on the planet. You buy a copy of OS X, and it comes with all the languages it supports. Not like XP which you only get the localized version by default and it's a huge pain in the ass to get even the International English version. Besides, if you wanted Devanagari or CJK support, you'd either have to download the kits or buy a kit separately. Moreover, not even the MS apps have the same degree of support of i18n. and once you are inside cpan, you should issue a command "force install Tk". You have to force because cpan fails some of the tests.

I wouldn't have had problem installing Bastille, but I noticed that the install script installs all the files under /usr (like /usr/sbin, /usr/lib, etc.). So, I simply changed all the /usr/ to /usr/local/ where I usually install stuff myself.

Then, the install script runs OK, but... we don't have the script "bastille" installed! It's still lying in the bin/ directory of the distribution. As far as I can tell, the other install script doesn't seem to install the script either :O

So, I'd copy the script to the /usr/local/bin, and run... no luck because the bastille script expects the files it needs to be installed in /usr/share or /usr/lib or /usr/sbin :(

Then, I'd change those hard-coded locations in the bastille script by hand, and run. Another error. It still cannot find Bastille/*.pm in /usr/local/lib/Bastille because the $LIBPATH or whatever in the bastille script has /usr/local/lib/Bastille instead of just /usr/local/lib :(

I'd correct it and run bastille, and now I get another error telling something about it cannot find some information. At that point, I decide to rm -fr /usr/local/lib/Bastille and /usr/local/share/Bastille and a couple of files the install script installed in /usr/local/sbin :(
