That's a bad idea anyway. Return it to the owner after recording the VIN and notify them "this car can not be brought up to compliance. It is illegal to drive this on the road. You have hereby been notified. If this vehicle is caught on the road again (and it's not been stolen, etc) then you will lost your drivers license for one year and pay a fine of $X". Sure, 99% of cars in this situation would be pieces of junk, but would you want to be responsible for that 1% that is actually worth something as a classic car when you destroy it?

No, it shouldn't. Saying the screen is 90% larger means that it's 90% larger. It says nothing about diagonal measurements.

You probably also whined about the use of bits instead of bytes to denote ROM capacity in the old days, despite the fact that it's a perfectly accurate term, and in fact mirrors the way that EPROMs and RAM chips were measured and marketed as components.

  8. Mutually incompatible options on Windows 8 Changes Host File Blocking · · Score: 4, Informative

The option on one end is to allow the user to have full, unfettered access to everything on their system, from the highest levels down to the lowest. This was done back in the DOS and Win9x days, and although it does have a few benefits in certain niches, it's also very bad for security.

The option on the other end is to disallow access to modifying the underlying system and related settings, and only allow such actions from full administrator accounts, and maybe not even then (depending on the mindset of the development team). This pisses off a lot of the hardcore techies who like to modify everything they can, but to be fair it does help protect the average user.

Now, I'm not defending Microsoft on how they've implemented this silently and without notification to the user, but on the face of it I think it's a good idea for the average user, at least with regards to the Facebook part of it (not so much on the Doubleclick part). Think about it - the average non-techie person wants Facebook to work. They will want to get their notifications on the Start screen (and elsewhere).

I agree with other posters - they should have openly done this and notified the user before "fixing" it - something like "Your hosts file has been modified to prevent access to <site on this list>. Is this desirable to you?" with three options - "Yes", "No", "More information". That way, the techies can click "Yes" and go about their business, average users can click "More information" and maybe actually learn a little bit in the process, then come back and click "Yes" or "No" as per their wishes.

As with many things, the idea is sound, but the implementation is not. To those saying "well, malware wouldn't redirect to localhost, it'd redirect to a false Facebook", there's nothing stopping a piece of malware from being written that is similar to the existing rogue security software, but that also uses hosts to block access to various social media sites, in an attempt to give the uneducated user further reason to believe they're truly infected as bad as the rogue software tells them they are, and also as a weak attempt to prevent the user from going online and telling people about it even after the rogue software has been removed. They'll do anything to get a few more successful purchases of their crap software. I'm quite surprised they haven't really done this already, to be honest.

  9. The main problem with that is, who gets to decide which genetic modifications are "good" and which ones are "bad", and will they try to enforce that on others? There are people that would love to make it so that things like cannabis have no effect, for example, or that people have no inclination towards religious belief (which, like it or not, is a personal choice).

A single two-part episode was too much for you? I suppose you must really hate DS9 then, with five episodes that concerned the mirror universe somehow. Even TOS had an episode that was clearly mirror universe (and another episode where nothing is directly tied to the mirror universe, but that does depict the Defiant's trip to the mirror universe from the perspective of the regular universe).

Well, there are two schools of thought:

    1) What matters is the data, and if it's identical to retail then it's worthless
    2) What matters is the authenticity, and even if the binary is identical to retail, the fact that it's an authentic prototype/test cart is worth something

I belong to the latter school. I own a Sonic 3 EPROM cartridge that's on an authentic board, but I've dumped it to find out it's 100% bit-identical to retail. It's still worth something to me because it's an authentic prototype cartridge.

It's the first school of thought that causes such carts to go undumped, even for private backup (although this mindset is waning). If I had the cash, I'd still pay even for a cart that had been dumped and publically released, as the cart is still unique and not so easily fakeable (sure there exist repros, but they don't usually reproduce the prototype housing, just the data).

It's certainly not with $150,000 though. I expect it to end up either selling for maybe a couple thousand, or not selling at all.

I've never heard of "NES-SRP-TEST-02" and apparently neither has Google. Most prototypes I've seen are either on modified retail boards, custom boards, or NES-TKEPROM boards. Coupled with the fact that I can't see any NES video artifacts (although the video is blurry), I'm having serious doubts about this cartridge's authenticity. The artifacts could be explained away by either blurry camera or RGB-modded NES, but the board is a big red flag one for me. Even if it is authentic, it wouldn't be worth $150,000 being most likely the final retail binary. There was an actual prototype Zelda disk that had numerous differences, and it didn't sell for anywhere near $150,000.
