I have a sinking suspicion that the dialogue and acting is going to be similar to that of these last two movies (essentially what makes them 'horrible' in many people's eyes)

Well yes - a movie with bad dialogue and acting - wouldn't that in itself suggest that it perhaps is not so great?

IMHO it wasn't only the dialogue and acting, but the plot, the filming, and the direction that was bad.

But besides that they were fine ;) /Soren

I can't remember the amounts but around the time #1 came out they talked about the fact that in a normal picture they shoot about twice or three times more material and then cut it down to what you see.

I LOTR they shot about ten times as much. That is for every minute of finished movie they've shot 10 minutes of film.

So sure there is a lot of CGI going on, but there is still plenty of old fashioned moviemaking involved.

But off course with gollum and a giant orc army (what 100.000 orcs?) they have to rely on CGI. /Soren

Now this is a child that uses high screaming as the first symptom of hunger, or any othe discomfort - but when she has hickups she doesnt seem to notice. She'll just go on watching our faces - or whatever little people does for fun. This is even though every hickup makes her little body jump.

While not even resembling proof for anything - it might suggest that the theory that suckling and hickups are related behaviour is not that far of.

I get the worst hickups myself. My little 100kg 190 cm body, shakes in cramps an my head and throat aches - and they last for a long time. We once threw a dinner party - and I had the hickups all through dinner - quite conversationkiller :)

  9. Some information on Denmark Poised to Legalize Music Sharing · · Score: 2

this is really not such a big deal. As it is now Danish law says that it is illegal to make digital! copies of digital content. (Me reading slashdot in Denmark is borderline criminal behaviour since my computer makes a digital copy of a digital original).
With everyone owning cd-burners and with compression technology (mp3) this law is outdated. It came about in response to the music industries wish to protect itself with the advent of music cd's.
Danish copyright law states that everyone is entitled to make personal copies of published material. You can copy books, videos etc. It is of course illegal to publish such material, or to sell it. You can only make personal copies.
The new law proposes the same restrictions on digital content. Any published material may be copied for personal use. The bearing on Napster is of course that when music is available on Napster it is in fact published material. As such anyone can make a personal copy.
It will still be illegal to publish material on the internet without consent of the copyright holders, so Danes will still be prohibited from sharing music via Napster.

Though there can be no doubt that basic has many shortcoming compared to eg C and C++, it still doesn't mean that it could be the right tool for som developer for some jobs.

An easy language, and a good graphical developmnet environment will encourage development of small programs that scratch the itch of the average user.

Back in older times when my dad bought our first computer (commodore vic 20) I started doing Basic. This continued on the commodore 64, and on our first PC it was gwbasic.

Then I accidently stumbled accros turbo pascal 5. I tried to take a program I made in gwbasic and converted it to pascal (thank god for the excellent help function in turbo pascal), and I discovered that it ran many times as fast on pascal.

Well perhaps others will try the same. Writing

    10 print "Hello world "
    20 goto 10

is sure an easy concept to begin with.

In the manifesto he says cybernetic totalism is:(pertially)
    2) That people are no more than cybernetic patterns.
    3) That subjective experience either doesn't exist, or is unimportant because it is some sort of ambient or peripheral effect.
    4) That what Darwin described in biology, or something like it, is in fact also the singular, superior description of all creativity and culture.

Even though lots of people seem to think that 2 => 3, I think this is a fallacy. This is especially sad since this fallacy causes many people to reject 1)
I must admit that I se humans in general, and consciousness in particular as "just" biological hmm creatures
But this doesn't dismiss the subjective experiences. When I eat an apple I have a subjective experince of the apple which is different (hence subjective) from the naxt man. But this doesn't change the fact that my perception of the taste of the apple is the product of some chemichal interaction between my tastebuds and the apple, followed by som electriv(?) activity in my brain.
When I fall in love it's also a chemical/electric reaction, and so is my free will (which I insist on having).

I took a course in philosophy of science (Perhaps I didn't learn enough - you be the judge of that), where some of the arguments against the idea is that consciousness is the product of purely biological mechanisms where :
    This discounts free will
    Trivializes love
Doesn't leave room for the "soul"

I don't wan't to sound like an Ayn Ryant follower, because they go to the other end.
My claim is that the biological explanation leaves room for the mystical, religous and other out of the world experiences. Can't we agree on a standing point between the extremes?

  14. My Danish Experiences on On the Reliability of DSL Providers... · · Score: 1

Well i live in Denmark where the XDSL market explode this year. Earlier the prose was just to high (and only one provider offered flat rate).

But all is not well just the same. Until recently there was only one national phonecompany TeleDanmark (TD) (divided in regional offices of course, but you only had one choice)
Recently it was sold of, and the laws governing the telephone system was changed. But TD still owns all the copper lines.
TD themselves offer ADSL through your existing line, but they will not let competitors use the existing phone lines (they say it might cause interference). As a result you must have a new telephone line installed to get XDSL. As TD owns the infrastructure it is TD that must put in the new phone line. As they have an obligation (because of the de facto monopoly) to supply regular phone lines, they will only install a new phone line for XDSL if they have sufficient redundant capacity.

So if you want XDSL from the competitors TD can turn you down if they judge that do not have enough backbone in the area.
Furthermore since TD technicians install the new lines, and there are a lot of people wanting XDSL, the waiting time for the installation is ridicolous. I ordered my in mid-may, and got the line installed in mid august. And i was lucky since I was one of the first to order after the prices went down!
First TD has to find out if there is spare capacity, that takes up to a month! then they have to get a technician out which also takes time.
If I had ordered ADSL from TD, they can deliver in just 2 weeks since they just use the existing phoneline with a filter!

Well all that is ancient history now. I have my XDSL connection (using a 1-meg modem from nortel) 384/128 connection. Its not a monster connection, but for private surfing it's supreme. RH7 downloads in ok time so all is well.

I have also taken part in discussions wether he was a replicant or not. I have always leant on the side that he is not a replicant.

I think the so called hints are rather weak. Also in the last fight it is very clear he is no match at all for the other replicant.

Going by the philosophy that once a work of art is finished any valid interpretation of it is true I will still think of Deckar as human.

The precense of the hints then show one of the themes of the movie. Deckar is a human, but he is questioning his own humanity. He is a killer of non-humans but falls in love with one of them. It thus illustrates the many übermensch philosophies of our time. No matter how different these replicants are they still think and feel and thus have a right to live. I very vividly remember the last speach of Rutger Hauers character, before he dies.

Another point is the implanted memories. When Deckar looks at his own past he wonders if it is true or just implanted. but what is memory? All memory is tainted by our own filters, later experiences and many other things.

In reality our memory of things past has only little more relity than the memory of replicants!

It is strange for someone like me, who all his life has lived in this a society to look at a flamingly liberalistic country such as the USA.

It has often been heard that welfare, and social security takes the incitament from people. If you support the weakest members of society you make the members of society weak seems to be the logic behind this argument.
