Obviously, there is nothing wrong with Stephen King. He is a good author for "geeks" and everyone else. I am encouraged by his insistence that the book be "e-published." Yes, the publishing industry needs to rethink itself, but I do think that this is a good first baby step. Jordan
I thought after the release of 2.2, Linus said that he thought there would only be about 20 revisions in the 2.3 line...any ideas why we have made it so high?? Jordan
I think that this is an outrage. Without a doubt one's personal computer is off limits to your employer. Sickout or not Northwest has no rights in the domain. I suggest a boycott. J
Jish- At clemson they are paying a whopping $30,000+ a year for their Internet access. And then they have to pay for phone calls home now too. Internet access is a privlege, but if Clemson is going to limit this, where does it stop?
This is a dangerous precedent. Protecting "standard" methods of communication/media is the first step to destorying progress. If Clemson is allowed to do this, what steps can other organizations take to protect their interests??
The 5th amendment is thrown around a lot as something that can be used to just not talk to the feds, police, etc. However, it does not always apply. For example, in most civil cases it doesn't have any bearing. As far as Mitnick not turning over the key for fear of prosecution, he would be safe from that under the double jeopardy clause, stating he can't be tried twice for the same crime(and that canadian game show hosts are smarter than the contestants, have you ever noticed how much Alex loves answering a question that is in french? He savors it...). I don't think Kevin should turn over the key. As far as the legality of the government not returning it, I don't know. He doesn't have the right to use a computer, so what would he do with it?? Jordan ----- Not a sig.
I worry about how Jon will be portrayed, and how we, as a community, will be portrayed in this story. All mass media has a history of spinning things in their favor, and I hope ABC looks at all sides. I am looking forward to seeing this piece, and I hope that maybe it will bring to light what Jon, and the others were trying to do in the first place, i.e. Watch DVDs on their Linux box Jordan
I think that this is long in coming...SCO as an OS stumbled some years ago, and people just can't justify using SCO when they can use Linux for free. I will avoid the politics of what I think about SCO, but I have administered my fair share. All in all, I think this is a positive step for SCO, and I hope that they do port Tarantella.
No, I think that there is bias in all media, but it used to be that a newspaper was either liberal or conservative, and not ENTIRELY driven by commercial motives in everything it published.
I think we all know that Linux, and open source software in general, if nothing else, is making commercial companies work harder. I think that this is a positive move, because MS Windows IS a reality, and although many of us use Linux in our organizations, we still have to support Windows on the end users PC(ya ya ya..I know Linux there too...). If Linux forces MS to make a better product, then we all win. We have a great GPL'd OS, and a commercial OS that sucks just a little bit less...

AOL only grudgingly provided its subscribers with Web access, fearful they would desert.
This is a very true statement. AOL would much rather its memebers spend time inside AOL's realm (read advertisers, vendors, etc) instead of the WWW in general. I haven't used AOL in a LONG time, but when I did (I was young and ignorant) I remember hating it. My concern is that AOL will now have such large control of so many media outlets that the accurate and unbiased spread of news and information will be interrupted. Will we be required to buy from "approved" vendors if we have road runner? Will AOL monitor which TV shows I watch and tailor ads to my likes (maybe not a bad thing)? But, the long and short of it is, the little guy is losing his voice, drowned out by a monolihic media giant, of both the "old" and "new" types. These are dangerous times, dangerous times indeed, and we must be careful gentlemen...

I, like the rest of you, love small gadgets. My cell phone weighs 4 oz. my laptop 4 pounds, my rio next to nothing, etc etc etc. My question is this. At what point do things become so small that using them is to difficult? Case in point, Sprint PCS wireless web phones. I have personally not used them, but I have heard that using the web on them is a joke because it is so damn small. I have used cell phones where the buttons are so damn small you can't hit one at a time. I understand the necessity of nano research, and think all of these invntions/gadgets are great, but at some point all functionality is lost because the gadget is too small!! J
Because the pirate continually transmits the phoney flag, the radio stays tuned in until the car goes out of range or the driver switches off the RDS feature.
It seems to me that there have been a lot of annoucements made recently that were quickly retracted after criticism. It seems to me we could save a lot of hassle if legislators/business ASKED the people what they want, and what they think, before they act. Maybe that is too much to ask from unelected officals. J
To the author: Congratulations on one of the finest essays I have ever read. I think that every one of us that knows how you feel owes you a debt of gratitude for putting it in such poinent(sp?) language. I am grateful nothing did happen, and I am grateful that hundreds of thousands of wives, girlfriends, and others understodd why we had to be there, even if they thought it was crazy. What I really want to know is, if something had gone wrong, what where we supposed to do??? Find the line of code we missed the first 300 times?? Pull out a rifle?? Storm the capital?? Who knows, and why do I even ask? J
To make the statement that a failure of the PS2 could mean the fall of one of the largest electronic/music giants in the world is a bit of an overstatement. Sony is sufficiently diversified in its ventures to overcome a downturn in sales of one division. It didn't get to where it is today by doing that. jordan
We live in a lawsuit happy society, and I think that 80% of lawsuits are futile and a waste of the courts time. As an american, I treasure the right to sue, but I think that lawsuits that could be filed, for ergonomic injuries suffered at home would be ridiculous. Is your work resposible if you fall down the stairs while working at home during business hours? I don't think so, so why should they be responsible for this?? Jordan
Ok, so my english teacher would kill me for misplacing my modifier...I done learned good!
