    And the first step towards this goal should be to fire the majority of the Lawyers at W3C. Why should a techology standard organization be comprised of "mostly lawyers"? Should it be mostly technologists (i.e. software developers)!?

    Check out lpi.org. Linux certification IS available. It is amazing how many testing centers there are available too. Only $100 a test! and the official LPI books should be out in stores soon. $30 a piece. thats pretty cheap :)

    If you like Iain Banks then Wasp Factory is a must. that book floored me and now I find it necessary to read everything by him. The Bridge was also extremely fascinating. Haven't read Inversions yet though...

    For anyone who is in the Chicago area, I have a 6.5 foot Schroff Enclosure for sale. It is in perfect condition, has a glass door with a lock, internal dual fan, wheels, the whole deal. This is a $1500 enclosure meant for factory conditions so email me if you have a reasonable offer. I am a reasonable person and would like to see it find a nice home.

    what's going on here? We will just have to wait to see if the movie sucks or not. Regardless, this IS newsworthy and I would be interested in seeing it.

    i am rather new to linux so there may be better and mor sexy ways of doing it but when i want something to start at bootup i just add it to the bottom of /etc/rc.d/rc.local

    however my problem is when i try to start redir this way it doesnt take... and i have to do it manually. however i rarely reboot so no biggie :)

    you can turn off the typewriter sound by clicking on the sound icon in the "send message" window. it will put an X through it and turnoff the sound. i find that "feature" idiotic.

    yeah until AIM gets file xfer and chatting. all it is is instant email. whats the point? AOL would be better off just opening their ports and using ICQ.

    regardless of the #'s, it is common sense that one needs a computer monitor and not a TV to appreciate a video game system these days. TV's are terrible. and who knows when HDTV will be affordable or if HDTV will even be worth it. give me a 19" monitor with .22 dot pitch any day.

    where is ICQ during all this? does ICQ not have the greatest # of users? and did ICQ not pioneer the IM concept? why do none of the other messengers use the ICQ protocol? and to top it off AOL OWNS ICQ! wtf?!

    a font server to host ALL fonts for a whole company, etc. what a genius idea! that would be truly wonderful. but, not applicable since i am still addicted to windows...

    excellent idea.

    the comments usually DO contain more intellegent writing than the online news links. some sort of section containing high-moderated comments/topics would be nice. i cannot think of how to do it. but there are many a thread that dies simply because it is no longer on Slashdot's front page. i ASSUME that it is dead at least and never return. there are a lot of great conversations that i would go back and read if i knew people were posting.

    just a thought.

    you can't expect everyone using a PC to be computer literate enough to use a non MS OS. come on. face it. MS has a monopoly and these people are victims. Have a LITTLE heart will ya?!

    if they are going to copy apple, then they should copy the way the case opens. the apple cases are the first intelligent case design i have ever seen. all this ingenuity designing sophisticated hardware and no one until apple could design a stinking case. i dont care what the damn thing looks like just give me a case that i can install memory in without cutting my hands or taking the @#$%^&@ MB out! anyone else feel this way?! who cares about color. i would buy a freakin' pink case if it opened like an apple case!
