  5. It would be interesting if they could add a camera for a facetime on the wrist experience, something that seemed utterly SF not that long ago.

It is one thing to engage in filesharing - copyright infringing and all, but in addition he was profiteering big time from his activity. That makes it to me quite different from a legal point of view - he obviously made money from an illegal activity, and I expect that the punishment will be harsher because of it.

So I do like mechanical watches and have a few of them, some vintage, some recent, none really expensive. I find those small movements utterly charming. I always wear a watch, for me a phone never replaced it.
Then I received a stainless AW as an xmas gift from my wife and I must say that after initial doubts i found it really useful and pleasant. I currently wear it often during working days and business trips, my mechanicals are mainly worn in weekends now.
Battery life is not really an issue for me, it works all day, and I charge when I sleep.
But the true killer app is only in its infancy: health. A heart beat sensor is the beginning. it is well known that apple hired several people specialising in various other kind of sensors. FDA approval permitting these could be a crucial feature for commercial success since everyone wants to be and stay healthy.
Btw, several sources have estimates of 11-12 million Apple watches sold last year. I would say that is not bad for a new product category. If this is a flop, I wouldn't mind failing with 11 million pieces of anything.

  14. Bizarre paragraph in the linked article on Mathematicians Discover Prime Conspiracy (quantamagazine.org) · · Score: 2

Hi all, your input please on this paragraph in the linked article:

"Soundararajan was drawn to study consecutive primes after hearing a lecture at Stanford by the mathematician Tadashi Tokieda, of the University of Cambridge, in which he mentioned a counterintuitive property of coin-tossing: If Alice tosses a coin until she sees a head followed by a tail, and Bob tosses a coin until he sees two heads in a row, then on average, Alice will require four tosses while Bob will require six tosses (try this at home!), even though head-tail and head-head have an equal chance of appearing after two coin tosses."

This seems wrong to me. Both Alice and Bob have equal chance of rolling a head, hence on average they will need the same number of tries to arrive at a head toss; and since coins dont have memory, the next toss has equal chance of being head or tail. So I do expect the chances of head head and head tail to be the same.
This is how I see it, the statement above came from a mathematician so I am probably making a mistake in my reasoning but I don't see where.
    Any input?

  17. Re:Grade 2 Titanium Casing on TAG Heuer Launches "Connected" Android Wear Smartwatch With Intel Inside (hothardware.com) · · Score: 1

Actually Titanium is an interesting material for watch cases because:
    - it is not allergic at all (important for some)
    - it has excellent corrosion resistance
    - it is lighter than steel which becomes noticeable in a big watch like this
    - while it has the above advantages it is not crazily expensive (well of course TH would ask for a bigger upmark)

The only real disadvantage is that it scratches more easily than steel. It is possible that grade 2 is actually an alloy to reduce that surface softness (I am too lazy to google it)

I must say that its classic case makes it look rather nice. Is it better than a stainless steel Apple Watch which is also quite premium in its finish with innovative straps to boot? Not so sure.
Amusing detail that you can eventually swap (in a service center) the innards to a traditional mechanical watch though the total end price becomes high then.
