look sgi should _not_ try to out-sun sun or out-ibm ibm. they have great technology in an area that could represent high growth in the next 5-10 years. they should move into consumer video cards and propogate technology through set-top and otherlike markets. don't be a follower, be a leader!!! p.s. the linux strategy is really nice however...
of course, this game could backfire - linux is getting more enterprise support and seems to be moving in parallel (at least!) with NT in terms of being enterprise-ready. linux is FREE therefore hurting microsoft's longterm margins.
and you know, if i was an apple stockholder i wouldnt be that unhappy - jobs with a crappy os is a better bet than gasbag with a butter os. basically apple is in a branding battle now and jobs is a MASTER at brand.
my palm V that i bought at javaone for $200 (heh heh) has a VM with it called KJava with java.lang, java.net and java.io libraries plus some libraries for gui on palm...i think java.sun.com has some stuff on it about kjava...
mentioned above is fedex and ups - okay now they are just distribution but how long before they wise up and start getting more closely integrated with web retailers? they could absolutely fuck up the businesses of any number of commerce companies by moving into internet commerce...but then again they have a large installed base and we all know big companies don't like to cannibalize.
girly is well-known...the article will appear in fortune as well as news.com. basically, the open-source model is now being accepted by vc's as legit and thats good for all you linux weenies out there because more startups will be formed around the model. basically this is all part of the natural commoditization of software - to add value vendors are moving to a service-type model where software is either provided as a service or the architecture of the software is based on the presumption that organizations have a live net connection at all times linking them in realtime to suppliers partners and customers...
sure i've got no problem with it -- im just pointing out WHY they are doing it. apple isn't sitting around going 'gee it would really be great for the open source community if we contributred this code' they are saying 'gee if we opensource the server then it will be ported to linux/bsd [already done] , then people will use it then we will have half a shot at competing with real and ms.' smart strategy if you ask me. also, i believe they are going to move into the market for high-end creation tools and compete with macromedia. this is how the game is played...
heh...okay so who's crazier, ellison or balmer?
never underestimate ellison's ability to make stupid maneuvers...
okay so how come microsoft.com didnt crash then?

slashdos effect...i like it.

heh...i think he meant the guy who wrote the ms page. funny comment anyway...
i'd have to take a laptop while i was at it.

stealing a few mb's per second from the neighbors...i can just see it now.

maybe i'll download the classes and post them on the web...email me if youre interested an/or have a site you want to post it at, i'm kind of lazy.
>This is one area that microsoft cannot touch with a 10 foot pole
nah - sql server is actually biting oracle on the ass, in terms of delivering 80% functionality for 20% of the price...

a few billion could be sitting behind proxies...
case you didnt notice, lotus IS porting to linus...
now this is an example of extremely mastubatory rumor-mongering...amiga+linus+transmeta chip ...
or debugging windows source code ;)
