i'd take these kind of bullshit rules more seriously if they outlawed OEM touch screen center console systems. how is that 'okay' but touching a cell phone is haram?
I have a ford fusion with the 'my touch' system. doing things like turning on the heated seats, or turning down the temperature require touching a finicky touch-screen panel. which invariably requires you to take your eyes off the road.
AI will confer an ever greater first mover advantage than Trinity. It is also very easy to dress up in a friendly manner (at least relative to nukes). With AI, once the genie is out of the bottle, it's never going back in. Unless you're a guy like Schmidt, you *should* be terrified of it. You might get better navigation in your self driving car; but at what cost? And are the benefits even remotely distributed among society as a whole?
Basically, entrusting private companies like google with something of this magnitude is irresponsible bordering on insane. We've reached a point in our technological evolution where every single human being on this planet could easily live a life of middle class security, with much left over. All AI is going to do is FURTHER concentrate wealth and power into a very select group of hands (and speaking of hands, i think Schmidt is showing his here). The rise of AI should be seen as an affront to human agency and dignity. We have two related trends: the growth of a knowledge economy, and the rise of automation. Gee, i wonder what the outcome will be?
Sincerely hope people with these types of views never get to make any kind of grown-up decisions involving other people.
Even a 1 or 2 dollar hike in gas prices is enough to bring a pretty good chunk of Americans to their knees financially. And of course; not everyone lives in an area where mass transit is viable.
Gotta love modern environmentalism -- giving people the feeling of a moral imperative to tell others how to live their lives.
Really, the goal should be on improving sequestration capability. Curbing emissions through draconian cuts to standard of living is NOT a viable option.
Could make the same kind of snark; front pants pockets are almost vestigial at this point. They're designed for maybe holding a tube of chap-stick, not something practical like a phone.
The good thing about crowdfunding is that there's no real collateral damage if the venture fails.
Sure the people who buy in because they like the idea, and want the finished product are on the hook what amounts to disposable income. The folks developing the product don't need to go into hock to fund their vision. There's no bank holding the bag in the event of default.
i'd wager the studios now see netflix's initial overtures as the camel sticking it's nose under the tent -- they won't be so quick to make that mistake again.
Tell that to someone who grew up in the USSR or GDR -- and try to keep a straight face. It's certainly a cause for concern here and getting worse; but no - we're no where NEAR a true authoritarian regime.
Well, that whole 'tip of the spear' thing is kind of true though. The vast majority of personnel are involved in maintenance, logistics, comms, etc no?
The statement about relative risk for servicemen pretty much does hold, on average.
Saying that combat isn't really risky.. yeah he lost the plot there.
i try to mod APK posts as funny, because they kind of are. but sadly i already posted in the thread, so missed out on this opportunity:( hopefully someone else can fill in though.
how many of those physically demanding jobs also have voluntary, yet steady access to things like "a sixer per night", or "hush puppies"?
Most of the blue collar/tradesmen i've known are basically sedentary after work (which makes sense), and so, so many also drank like fish, smoked, and ate shitty food.
(Not to mention that postmen are pretty frequently trotted out as an example of physical activity at work increasing lifespan/quality of life -- since they you know, walk almost all day, every day)
reading this thread, i was disappointed that no one made the comment "coldest place in the universe, other than my ex-wife's heart" or something similar. but yours was close enough.
he probably hasn't taken as many hits compared to guys like marino or favre. He's also not the type of QB who does a ton of running plays (i.e. doesn't rely on sheer athleticism)
It's the guys like Nolan Ryan that really ARE aberrations. Rookie year was 1966. Retired in 1993 (!!!)
I agree completely. I totally trust up and coming monopolies so much more than the established variety.

i think they called it the 'Raj' ?
How else would you explain snow in HAWAII? Clearly it's an elaborate plan to lure skiiers to a tropical paradise.
Go home Ben, you're drunk.
So would you at that point say that yes, in fact you CAN polish a turd?
oh you poor thing, living with 3 (ostensibly at least) hot roommates.
being ballerinas, at least you didn't have to worry about them eating your food right?

Herbert was right, even way back when in 1965.
sigh, the second god damn time this week i've had to say this:
AC! STOP MAKING SO MUCH GOD DAMN SENSE!
will you people ever learn?
Would be heartening to see refugees and migrants swarming into Africa for a change.

god dammit AC. stop wasting your insight.
This is why we have corn byproducts in our gasoline to say nothing of our food.
When industry starts looking for places to stuff output from subsidized agriculture, perhaps it's time to cut back on the subsidies eh?

Seems like a pretty good setup to me.

Fair enough, it is a bit like poking a mentally handicapped bear through the bars in his zoo cage.

Billions upon billions of dollars in the war chest, and nothing to really spend it on. So invest a few billion in mobile, why not?
They might pull an xbox type win out of it, or lose a few billion. Either way, they aren't materially impacted.
Typically when companies or people generate money out of thin air, it's because they're fucking someone. It seems skeevy, because it IS skeevy.
Not sure why any consumer anywhere at any time would defend the practice.
