Hey, you're pretty clever! I was reading through a few threads during my lunch break and noticed several of the completely stale (not to mention utterly off topic!) posts about Trump.. Then i ran across yours, how completely refreshing.
Anyways, have you thought of pursuing a career as a comedy writer?
(PS, which of his children were you taking a shot at? The hot one, or the kid?)
That's the lovely thing about modern environmentalism -- an ideology that gives its adherents a moral imperative to tell others how they should live their lives.
Where to live, what to eat, how to get around, how many kids they can/should have -- it's just endless.
And it's actually kind of repugnant when you think about it.
Ah yes; but at this point it doesn't matter if you made a profile yourself. While the 'shadow profile' thing gets trotted out frequently, there's a reason for that.
What would you wager the odds are of FB being able to identify you by browser signature/IP etc; and tying that to your shadow profile?
So basically you're getting the same dose of privacy rape as everyone who uses FB directly; but with none of the (questionable?) benefits of using the site.
Prison time for corporate misconduct is not handed out enough.
Look at it like this... If I knock over a liquor store, and steal a couple hundred dollars, I'd go to jail for 20 years (give or take). I'd be a convicted felon, and I'd never get anything more than a minimum wage job. Basically, my life would be over.
If I'm a C-level executive and play fast/loose with the law, I can steal millions of dollars; from hundreds or thousands of people -- and unless I embarrass the establishment (like Madoff), I might get probation, or a few years of parole/supervised release.
I'm not a huge fan of China, but their stance on firing squads for this type of conduct sounds about right.
Oh for fucks sake, what was GM's total output in that same period? I'm all for Tesla as a new and upcoming player too, but moving the goalposts like that is just disingenuous.
The fact is, Ford/GM/Chrysler get shit on for being out of date and old fashioned; but they know how to make cars, and hype aside -- are much, much better at making cars than Tesla. (Obviously this applies to the japanese/German/korean transplants as well.)
Give it 5 years. The traditional, old school makers will put Tesla out of business. Though, that might be mission accomplished for Musk; his goal seems to be more about making electric cars a "thing", than his particular brand -- which is noble.
i dunno, there's use for that data outside of marketing.
I'd willing to bet in a lot of regions FB's data is probably more accurate than a national census. Or if a company wanted to build a factory somewhere, getting an idea of the locals might be helpful?
Not justifying facebook or zuck of course, but in terms of data, it's probably not just about adverts.
I've had an akitio node for the past 6 months or so, paired with an asus 501vw laptop and GTX 970; and the external GPU has worked fantastically.
There's a bit of a performance hit as parent said, but 30% seems a bit high; I think it's largely dependent on your screen resolution and what FPS you're hitting.
At this point if you're shopping for a new gaming computer; it's probably in your interest cost/benefit wise to go with a desktop. BUT, if you have either a spare video card lying around and want a second gaming computer; or if you only want a single computer and need it to be portable -- eGPU's are good compromise.
Exactly, those privacy laws and conventions come from a time before automated monitoring could be a 'thing'.
The ability to have a network of cameras recording all the time; tracking everyone at all times as they move about, might technically be within the letter of the law; but is most certainly very much contrary to the spirit of them.
And as has been previously mentioned; once the government gets a new tool, which can be sold to the public as a 'safety' measure, it's there, forever.
The lack of (real) push-back regarding CCTV systems and the like is only the beginning. Surveillance technology will only become more pervasive and more automated. This should be seen as an absolute fucking crisis -- we're quickly approaching an Orwellian nightmare where personal space, privacy, and liberty are no more.
Kaczynski was on to something. (minus the whole murder and bombing business.)
in the days of budget cuts and atrocious test scores; i'm really really glad apple is still able to get people to think their technology in the classroom is anything beyond a mixture of corporate welfare and advertising.
The line of thought seems to be "STEM STEM STEM! if we get the kids using technology they'll be the next generation of tech gods!"
But really, these are just tablets. And certainly don't represent much of an improvement over books, pencil, and paper. When it comes to you know, learning.
Which is what they should be focusing on. Drop the common core bullshit, stop teaching to standardized tests, and let kids fail from time to time.
The kids aren't creating a damn thing -- just being trained to consume content.
i was wondering the exact same thing earlier, given objects radiate heat at different rates, it's gotta take quite a bit of processing horsepower to differentiate them from living critters.
I'm kind of on the fence* about self driving cars; but incidents like this, as tragic as they are -- wind up being the impetus to improving the systems that make autonomous vehicles feasible in the long run.
*primarily due to the privacy and control implications they will wind up ushering in. In most things, without privacy you really do not have freedom. And freedom of movement should be a sacred thing, not far behind freedom of speech and expression.
As long as Comcast/Cox/Verizon own the pipes, that won't happen.
Unless you're talking about a dial-up ISP, in which case -- I'm jealous, I wish I could too could live in 1999
(Sincerely. i miss Everquest; even with the occasional massive lag spike, and hearing my sister yell at me that she needs the phone.)
Oh no no, Steam would just step in and handle that, for a nominal fee mind you.
Regulation always favors the incumbents. Incumbents always use their size and status for lock-in. (if not their pocket-books to shut out competition)
The eventual result being monopolies, who then hem and haw about how bad regulation is.
Good times.
Paper is actually kind of expensive.
Storage, secure disposal, filing.
Don't forget filing. In a given year how many man hours are spent looking through a filing cabinet for so and so's file? God forbid if gets misplaced.

growl, thanks slashdot! you ate text inside of lt / gt symbols.
insert "jennifer_lawrence_meme.gif" =/
Totally checks out Mr. Dude.

There's an entire industry based around exploiting these kinds of holes for financial gain.
panera, underarmour, zillow, trulia, dominos, wayfair etc etc. Track the sales/customer data, you have a very good idea of revenue numbers.
Security researcher though? Bleh.

That was just .. Toxic.

... how do you use your phone exactly?
why.. would you need headphones in such a contraption?
The future is a lot like downtown Phoenix. Nice, shiny new high-rises and little cafes where people clad in suit and tie go out for lunch.
Then about three blocks away you have a shanty-town filled with houses made out of corrugated aluminium.

you know, just because a game is shiny, doesn't mean it's devoid of content.
(Looking at you Witcher 3)
But, why limit yourself? especially since RAM is so cheap these days, and a good video card remains relevant for about 4 years.

Your post is 100% spot on insightful; and those chickens will come home to roost at some point.
I'm not a libertarian by any stretch of the imagination; but the student loan situation is one thing they're right about.
whose government is immune to corruption, and actually values their citizens
Surely you jest.
So is a bachelors degree -- and at this stage, i'm not sure which is more likely to pay off.
Good to know that the Crips wound up winning the gang-war; and got out of Compton.
