And this ladies and gentlemen, is why moderates tend to view environmentalists as nutjobs.

Energy consumption will forever and always be on the uptick. Global Population will stabilize, but predicting WHEN this will occur is less than precise.

The irony of your post is that you're advocating lowering birthrates, which is fine. From past experiences we know that the best way to do that is .. increase the standard of living. But your screed amounts to "stop using energy!" which will absolutely LOWER the standard of living of the very people with those high birthrates...

Pragmatically we need to figure out ways to provide energy that's cost effective, and as clean as possible. Any sort of draconian restriction on economic activity, nor population controls(!!) are feasible.

aside from the obvious anti-beta statement that's required -- i think having cops wearing these would be a great thing. how much less shady shit could they get away with if every interaction they have with the public is recorded and available in court? Or simply knowing that they're being recorded would probably make them think twice before doing anything borderline.

Example.. one day the police use excessive force against a terrorist or pedophile, and that's applauded -- who's to say they won't then go and use such methods on suspects ranging from ... jaywalkers on up?

I seriously, seriously doubt soldiers would follow orders that result in the slaughter (and it would be slaughter) of thousands of Americans.

It would be nice if the GOP returned to something more like Goldwater Republicanism. A couple quotes:

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed. Their mistaken course stems from false notions of equality, ladies and gentlemen. Equality, rightly understood, as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences. Wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism.
